On broadway world, last year it was announced that British television station ITV is planning to produce The Sound of Music Live. According to this site, the project is still on but curious to see if anyone has any more information about this.
I would love to see Connie Fisher or Samantha Barks play Maria.

I believe Laurence Connor was being mentioned as the director of this.
I know castings were held and it was due to rehearse in February/March of this year but since then, nothing!
Connie Fishers voice is pretty much shot. I watched this documentary called "I'll Sing Once More." last week. Couldn't imagine her being able to sustain any run in a musical.

According to a recent article I found it states that the show could not be broadcast in the spring due to the facts that it took them a long time to agreeing a budget and casting; including finding an actress to play Maria von Trapp - had taken longer than expected. On the Jo Hawes website there is a hint that the transmission could be happening in December. But those were the only two things I was able to find from a google search.

Hopefully they are able to find someone better suited for the role than Kerry Underwood was. She sang beautifully, but her performance was so wooden.
I think that both the sound of music and Peter Pan were fantastic. And wondering if in Europe they will manage the show as brilliantly as they did here

The Sound of Music wasn't bad. It wasn't really great, but it was certainly watchable. Even the terrible acting of some of the cast couldn't wreck it. I really do believe that Peter Pan was a mess. It was poorly filmed, poorly staged, and poorly cast. If The Wiz is a rehash of that, then I suspect it will be the last foray into live musicals for NBC. Let's hope that history does not repeat itself.
Hopefully, ITV has learned from some of NBC's shortcomings.

Anyone have a link to that Connie Fisher documentary? I've been wanting to watch it
The Sound of Music was the sound of mediocrity. I had to turn it off after fifteen minutes. I had to turn off Peter Pan. I have hopes for the Wiz but if this one is bad... just give up on this.

Even though ITV has never done one of these Live! events like NBC does, I just feel like producing theater for television is something that's in the British tradition, so maybe theirs will be better.

Casting looks really good although Kara looks a little old to be playing Maria. What does others think?
On the other hand I love Julian and sure will be great as the Captain. Being disappointed with NBC's choice this year I still have something to watch.
Excellent selection for the mother Superior. https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Maria-Friedman-Mel-Giedroyc-Kara-Tointon-More-Join-Julian-Ovenden-in-ITVs-Live-THE-SOUND-OF-MUSIC-This-Christmas-20151112
Is there any way we will be able to see this in the United States? BBC maybe? I love Friedman and Ovenden and would love to be able to see this.

I'm sure it will turn up online, but I hope to watch it on TV. Maybe PBS will air it?
Also, new Von Trapp movie! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jeh9JYHOylc
Maria Friedman as the Mother Abbess? Her voice always sounds so strained and tired. What an odd choice.

I agree, Maria Friedman seems like a very odd choice for the role. She has a pleasant voice, but not right for role at all. Mother Abbes works best best as a strong operatic voice.
Friedman would have made a great Baroness Schraeder 15 years ago.
The production is scheduled to air on December 20 at 7:30 on ITV. They have released their first promo for the show.

I absolutely HATE the operatic Mother Abbes (or in any other R&H show). Most often, the lyrics, emotion and character are sacrificed for technique.
Kara Toiton is a really interesting choice for Maria. She's not a HUGE name here in the UK, she was in a soap then won Strictly Come Dancing (Dancing With The Stars) I didn't even know she could sing until this was announced.
There's a few musical theatre actors who are big TV and film stars in the UK who could do this but I'm glad they've gone with a someone who is less known. I really hope she does well!
Julian Ovenden as the Captain is a fantastic choice and I can't wait for everyone outside the UK to see Katherine Kelly!
Another live version of "The Sound of Music"? If there was ever an over-rated musical, in my opinion this particular show is definitely one. Over-rated and over-done. I don't get this particular show's appeal.

Cause maybe it has no scarecrows or flying faries.
"
I am sure it will be great, and most of all I do hope that it wont be the first and last for UK television to do.
Unfortunately in this country all we are getting are bedtime stories with flying fairies, witches and children's characters. Hopefully I will be able to watch through live streaming somehow.

But will they be able to top the gripping "No, mother, mother no" scene from the NBC version?

Don't be silly. The reason I don't care for "The Sound of Music" is because it is overly-saccharine, cloying and maudlin.
