I would love to see Stephen Colbert host. If not him, then maybe Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo, Josh Groban, just to name a few.

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

What happens during the one hour not aired on CBS?

^That’s probably when they’re going to present the creative arts awards.

Well personally as it’s the 75th I hope they make time for a lot of meaningful tributes. Not just some one minute mention.  Ie. Sondheim. James Earl Jones Theatre.  I’d love to see a bunch of icons presenting: Angela Lansbury, Chita Rivera, Bernadette Peters, Joel Grey… more performances. Maybe even an opening number that takes say Hugh Jackman through every one of the 74 previous musical winners.

I think 75 years is great way to celebrate those who’ve been since near the beginning. I wonder if there are any 96 year olds that attended the very first awards

I think it would be really cool if they end up getting former co-stars from different Broadway classics/hits to present together. Here are some ideas I've thought of...

Michael Crawford & Sarah Brightman - The Phantom of the Opera
Nathan Lane & Matthew Broderick - The Producers
Mandy Patinkin & Bernadette Peters - Sunday in the Park with George
Andrew Rannells & Josh Gad - The Book of Mormon
Dick Van Dyke & Chita Rivera - Bye Bye Birdie
Marissa Jaret Winokur & Harvey Fierstein - Hairspray

LOl - if Hugh Jackman is hosting and celebrated each previous winner the way he did for the 2009 Oscar nominated movies - he will use up all the time allotted for the CBS telecast!

I have been to the Tonys at RCMH only once. It was in 2005 and hosted by Hugh.  What I got from being there was very different than simply watching the telecast. There was a very strong sense of community, with every one cheering for all the nominees ( regardless of which show was one's favorite).  A very exhilarating feeling celebrating theatre!

I can't imagine there won't be an entire segment devoted to Sondheim.   I would hope/imagine that it will be accompanied by a heck of a montage bringing people back that have played his iconic roles.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

The Company revival is already expected to be a major player. I'll be surprised if the Tonys managed to find time to do a full out Sondheim tribute during the telecast. They’ve lately been more interested in marketing the slate of shows from the season that’s being celebrated. Although I was thinking this year’s In Memoriam segment could not only end with Sondheim as the final mention, but the orchestra could also play ‘Send in the Clowns’ throughout the whole thing.

In my most recent piece for Gold Derby, I created a poll asking readers which former Broadway co-stars they'd most love to see reunite on the Tonys. Most of those mentioned above are listed as options. Although you can comment with ideas of your own if you want.

If the Grammys could find time to have a Sondheim segment, surely the Tonys can too.

You must understand, most of the CEREMONY will be a paean to Sondheim (and not just the inevitable In Memoriam tribute) because Company will enter with the most nominations and walk away with the most wins.
True greatness.

With four hours (probably more because these things tend to run late), there is no way there is NOT a Sondheim tribute. I think it's more likely to be 20 minutes long than to not exist and I would honestly say the same thing if the show was only an hour long. It is ABSURD to think there may not be a dedicated Sondheim tribute at the freaking Tonys. The man shaped the entire industry.

This year’s nominations announcement has been pushed back. They will now take place on May 9th as opposed to the previously scheduled date of May 3rd. Not to mention that the cut-off date for eligibility has been extended to May 4th. The reason for this is because “Due to the challenges that Broadway has faced in recent weeks, and in an effort to allow nominators to see Tony eligible shows, we have decided to extend the deadline for eligibility requirements.”

Question for anyone who knows or has ever attended -

When tickets go up for the general public, do they typically sell out quickly?

I should’ve been Blac Chyna.

They will push more of the awards into the pre show just to make this happen, if they need more time for the nominated show performances.  Not sure it would be 20 minutes, but he will get some time for sure aside of the in memoriam segment.

Although what I found unique about how the In Memoriam segment was done at the Oscars last month is that for certain individuals, celebrities came out to say a few words about them. Like Tyler Perry spoke about Sidney Poitier, Bill Murray spoke about Ivan Reitman, and Jamie Lee Curtis spoke about Betty White. That's something I think award shows in general should try more often, including this year's Tonys. If they do that, then someone would certainly have to come out to say a few words about Stephen Sondheim.

One of my favorite presentations was a riff on this.  If I recall correctly for both the Best Actor and Best Actress categories five individuals came out and each gave a heartfelt, specific, and highly personal introduction to one of the nominees.  It felt deeply human, one artist appreciating another.  It is easy to envision how wrong this could go, but somehow it all worked.
