"The 2022 Tony Awards, the 75th annual celebration, will air live coast-to-coast for the first time, but as with September’s show, this year’s four-hour presentation will be split between Paramount+ and CBS. The first hour, at 7 p.m. ET/ 4 p.m. PT will feature exclusive content streaming only on Paramount+. The awards show will continue at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT live on CBS and streaming live and on-demand on Paramount+."

I do wonder what the ceremony will look like this year in terms of COVID. Masks? Proof of vaccine?

Seems like it'll be Huge Jackman as host. If not, Broderick and SJP?

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Exciting it'll be back at Radio City and four hours, three on CBS, though I did like the intimacy of being in a Broadway theatre last year. Definitely feels so much more normal, and I'm sure by that point it'll be masks optional (unless they continue for optics). 

Live coast-to-coast will be great for the ratings also, considering there's usually some sports or big TV event often conflicting that evening.

Come to think of it, Jackman hosted the 2004 Tonys, when he also won an award for The Boy From Oz.

There have been a lot of examples of this in recent years. As you mentioned, Chenoweth and Jackman, but also Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick co-hosting The Producers year, Lane also hosting the year he did Forum, Sean Hayes when he was doing Promises Promises, Angela Lansbury when she was doing Deuce, and I'm sure many more I'm forgetting. That's not to say Jackman would be interested this year, but being in Music Man definitely doesn't automatically rule him out.

It won’t happen but I wish they would stick to airing performances filmed in the actual theaters, instead of how it’s been done live on that stage in years past. It gave a MUCH better representation of the shows than they normally get.

I have no interest in seeing taped performances during the Tony Awards. It's not the Thanksgiving Day Parade, and there have been many unforgettable performances captured live during the ceremony.

True, but there have also been performances that were ruined by bad camera work or mic issues.

I guess that’s an argument I don’t really understand, unless you’re actually in the audience at the awards show. Because for everyone else it’s still a filmed performance they’re watching. And the performances last year were still filmed live in front of an audience with their original sets (which looks much better than digital replicas). So I don’t see a downside, again, unless you’re sitting at Radio City and want to see them perform in front of you.

That Moulin Rouge! performance would not have been as explosive at Radio City. Maybe the only one that would have fared well is Tina given the live audience/concert vibe of the performance. I watch from home, so as long as the performances are captured well, who cares in what venue it's filmed.

The Tony Awards eligibility cut-off date for the 2021-2022 season is Thursday, April 28, 2022 for all Broadway productions which meet all other eligibility requirements. Nominations for the 2022 Tony Awards will be announced on Tuesday, May 3, 2022.

I would love to see Stephen Colbert host. If not him, then maybe Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo, Josh Groban, just to name a few. 

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince
