Tanner was on for today's matinee today, opposite Frank as Michael and he was lovely. I don't know that I'd put him as my favorite or anything but he did a great job. I thought the end of his Angry Dance was brilliant and that his Electricity was particularly strong. In my opinion he seemed to fit in well with the cast, for it only being his second US performance, and he truly is one of the more serious Billys (which I admit I tend to like less than those who play it a bit lighter) so it took me a bit of time to warm up to him but I ended up thoroughly enjoying him! Something about him felt different, like had a sort of...older feeling, perhaps because he seemed more muscular to me. The others all feel like they have a sort of youthful toned thinness to them and I felt like Tanner could end up really built. Random, I know, but it just felt like different sort of Billy, all good though. It was nice to see a change, but I'll probably have some loyalty to the original US three forever.
My friend, who had never seen the show (and incidentally ended up sitting next to Julianne Moore and her two kids) kept saying how he was "amazing" the whole way home.
congrats Billy Elliot for the Drama Desk Awards!!!

I've kind of wondered about this since the Tony nominations came out, but does anyone know why David B. was nominated and not Frank, since they share the same role?
Oh okay thanks! I was worried that it was because the nominators thought David B. was better, but I'm glad that wasn't the case. I wish the producers had petitioned for them to be nominated together, though. It seems unfair to Frank since he's doing the same job.
Finally saw Tanner! He did an excellent job, it was fun hearing a few small line differences, and the slightly thicker accent, and of course a new take on Billy. Pretty strong actor, which is awesome... I hope we get to keep him! :)
Well, its not like he's new to the show, lol, he's been in longer than Kiril and David really. They did the same thing to Tommy too that one week, like 6 out of 8 perfs or something crazy...
Oh I know, I just always think of how tired I would be if they pounded me like that. I wonder if it's more difficult to be doing the show for the first time ever or to have to re-learn it for all the changes.
He started out in London and a couple of months into his run he was called to the show in Sydney were he did the show for I believe 1-2 months and then went back to London. A couple of months later he went back to Sydney to perform for 1 month.
Not only did Corey do that but when he returned to Sydney he was taken straight to the theatre from the airport and went on and did the second half of the show.
When I was there on Sunday this older woman and her husband kept talking to me and asking me questions, probably because I was a young woman by herself as my friend and I had separate seats, and she informed me that the way it worked was that there were two Billys and when one gets tired the other one comes on and does the next dance number and then they switch back when he's been rested and continue to do that throughout the show.
LOL... oh, tourists... I hear lots of random convos debating the working of the show, and who is on when. Sometimes I chime in if its near me, usually its regarding the inserts in the playbill, people think every Billy/Michael/Small Boy is an understudy just because there is an insert.
That's what started the conversation, she held her playbill out to me and said "Can you tell me what all this means?"
Her husband also said to me during intermission that the moral of the story is 'Orchids sometimes grow in the desert' and that I was supposed to ponder it during the second act.
Enjoyed seeing Kiril again, hadn't seen him in awhile. Such a polished dancer, he's absolutely amazing to watch. The most interesting bit tho... they finally dropped his key for Electricity. A LOT. Has anyone else noticed this in a prior performance? Or perhaps this is new this week....
I said to myself this morning, it'll be Tanner tomorrow and Kiril tonight just because I wanted it to be Tanner tonight and Kiril tomorrow. I can't win at seeing Kiril or David again, it just never works out.
