Things to do in NYC

I've been there quite a few times, so I've done the whole Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty touristy thing... but I was wondering if there was anything else I could do. Obviously, on my visit I am seeing a couple of Broadway shows, but I really need things to do in the day. Besides going to Central Park, my sister and I don't really have anything else planned. Any suggestions? We are going July 20th to July 23rd. [I wasn't sure of any special festivals or anything of the sort...] Thanks for all of your help, --korenglish

Jimmy... I would love to just watch Broadways all the days I'm going to be at NYC, but I definitely have a limited budget. I really would love to see a festival or something of the sort, I know that they have things like that, but I wasn't sure if it was during my time period. I'll also probably do a little bit of shopping with my sister. I plan to buy only Broadway shirts for the coming up school year. re: Things to do in NYC --korenglish

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is really neat, and cheap. If you like clothes they have a new exhibit on Chanel. Wall Street and Trinity Church area are really neat to walk around in...

Wait, what? Broadway in Bryant Park? What/when is that??

EDIT: Nevermind, I found out what I needed to know. And now I'm mad because I'm not available at that time on Thursdays. re: Things to do in NYC Updated On: 7/3/05 at 01:38 AM

Check out New Yorkled. It lists street fairs, concerts, parades, you-name-it. I can also recommend the boat tours around Manhattan Island. The 3-hour tour is a wonderful COOL way to kill an otherwise hot afternoon!

When I was in NY for 4 weeks, my favorite thing to do was walk around the different neighborhoods. Chinatown has some of the cheapest places to eat, and is just fun (gotta love Canal Street!). SoHo is great for window shopping and seeing the trendy fashions. Chelsea is interesting with its mix of meatpacking factories and trendiness. And TriBeCa holds a special place in my heart (where my studio was) and is fun to walk through. I could go on and on...

If you're into museums, check out MoMa, the Met, the Whitney, the Cloisters, etc. There's practically a museum for anything, and they're all relatively cheap.

There's also a Broadway tour that runs almost every day I think and costs like $20 for a student for a couple hours. You get to go behind the scenes at some theatres and such. It sounds really interesting and I think we might do it when I go back in October.

The city is so much fun to wander around and get lost in. Utilize the subways and buses and just have fun!

I really miss being there...

If you are interested in doing silly random things you should consider at some point pretending to be famous and having friends walk up to you and ask for your autograph. Its pretty funny stuff when other people start asking for an autograph and picture too!

But seriously, DO go to the parks!!! Washington Park is awesome...and you get to meet a very wide variety of people...including true bohemians-and maybe some of my friends. Central Park I love the most. Just have a picnic or something. Or buy a hot dog.
Battery City is awesome too.

enjoy your trip!

hire one of those rickshaw bicycle rides in central park. yes, it's expensive, but it's a lot of fun, especially if you get a cute european boy as your peddler re: Things to do in NYC

I love going to Serendipity when I'm in NY for Frozen Hot Chocolate. It's a neat place to visit, but you need reservations well in advance (I made mine 2 weeks prior to my trip). Right on the same street is Dylan's Candy Factory which is another fun place to visit.

MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) is fantastic, there's something for everyone. Also, the MET and the Museum of Natural History are always great.

Whatever happened to class?

I agree about the new MoMA -- even the building interiors have a sculptural quality to them. Check out the different exhibit floors ( especially if you like Picasso).

Also, check out the 5th floor cafe overlooking the sculpture garden - yummy raspberry chocolate cake to go with the Mediterranean type salad. Sometimes, you need to get a real feast after the eyes have had theirs re: Things to do in NYC
