Does anyone know what the people @ NYU look for in a potential student? Or just an acting college in general, academically.

I'm only 15 so I have about a year to go before I have to start making decisions. I've just heard amazing things, and I live in NY and want to stay for college, so why not NYU.

I plan on applying there. They are going to look for true talent or in my case as a designer, potential...along with students who are great academically. NYU is a very selective school, so I have a number of back-up schools. I hope I have what it takes!
First thing are the grades/SAT scores and then the talent... A good monologue where you are focused and a song that you can act the crap out of. Don't go in and sing anything from WICKED though. That will ruin your chances right there :o) the piano players are very anti wicked and Jason Robert Brown. Otherwise, it's a fantastic program/fantastic summer program.
Yeah -- I applied early decision to Tisch this year. I'll know within the next 2 weeks! Yikes. The program is AMAZING -- I went to the summer program this past year at CAP21. If anyone has any questions about applying or the program -- PM me.
I am a student at NYU Tisch Drama Atlantic and am leaving after this semester so soemone is welcome to take my place. lol Let me know if you have any questions.
I am an NYU sophomore in the acting program as well. Im in the Adler studio. I would say, primarily, NYU is looking for a combination of talent and experience. Grades come second, it would appear to me, as this is an acting conservatory focused more on personal artistic growth rather than letter grade delliniations. Good luck getting in. Im sure we'd love to have you.

That is what I was thinking, theatreboy. Would you say that for the design program, they are looking for potential talent/talent and experience? Also, the willingness to learn new things?
Yes, that sounds right. My roommate is on the tech track/design focus. I believe he submitted a portfolio presentation of work that was well organized and featured examples and samples of work from previous productions. Private message me if youd like either of our emails to get more detailed info. hope this helps.
BTW, what's tuition? Just curious...
around $40,000 a year. ouch. i know.
I wanna go to tisch, Cap 21 but I also have friends in the Experiement Threatre Wing and Playwrights Horizon who love it too!
If anyone has questions about Tisch, you can PM me :)
alot of my friends are currently at Stella Adler now and Strasberg. I have 1 friend who is at playwrights and she is switching out.

Theatreboy, check your PMs.
i'm also thinking of going to nyu...though since it's so expensive i may have to wait and try for grad school...though i'm sure that's much tougher so my only chance may be scholarships if i can even get in. does anyone know how quickly the summer program fills up?

This is what I say...if you can get in, there are ways to work out the financial issues. Both of my parents live with their parents...we aren't rich. I am not going to let that stop me...
very good point. first off i should worry about even getting accepted. ah money....guess you just work hard and hope for the best.

I went to NYU and it's really not that hard nor that great of a program quite honestly. The grad acting program is much better than the undergrad program for one. The undergrad dept is so large that you really don't get what you need. IT has no real theatre believe it or not just black box theatres. I am not a fan of method acting for another and the undergrad program does seem to favor this method. Although I would recc. going to Meisner. If you want to go for music theatre that is another story Cap21 is a great program but a very very political studio. The voice teachers are not that great in Cap21 you will get a good well rounded music theatre training but prob wind up wanting to study voice outside of NYU.
Carnegee Melon, Juilliard, CCM for music theatre I would consider first. If your going for acting save yourself the money and try SUNY Purchase good strong program way cheaper and your still close to NYC for the resources.
No schoool can make you get work you either have it or you don't don't put your eggs in one basket thinking just because you went to one of the top schools your going to get work.

I have heard nasty things about CCM. I know a lot of wonderful people come from there, but I have heard from more than one person that it is all cut throat there.
Who knows, maybe NYU is not what I will want. That is why I am going to visit this spring.

this is probably the best response I've heard about a school program in a long time.
auditioning for colleges for musical theater and trying to decide where to go about killed me...it was so hard to find the "right" program. I knew i wanted to be able to try and get work while i was in school.
I got into both UCLA and NYU and chose UCLA. i picked UCLA was because it was cheaper (im from CA) and because i look very young for my age. My manager/agents told me go to LA b/c you have a look and you are young, see if you can get film/tv work, then when your face/body grow into your voice move to NY and pursue a musical theater career.
moving to LA was definitely the best decision for me, and UCLA was the right fit for me as a school. My advice to anyone applying to colleges is to understand and decide why you want to go to that school, and is it the best idea for your career.
i also agree with not having your heart set on one school. it can be heartbreaking if you dont get in. Just remember that if you dont get in, it doesnt mean you arent talented or cant make it in the entertainment world. they may have 2 other blonde haired blue eyed sopranos that they've already cast and they dont need another one, maybe they hated your audition songs or monologues...maybe you look too much like the auditioners cheating husband.
i truely believe that everyone has their own path in life and what's meant to be will be. :)
good luck to all out there going through this process, i hope i could be of some help.

See, I do believe that a lighting design student's best place to study is in NYC. There I can make contacts and good friends in the business. I will later move around building my professional resume, but a good place to start for me is NYC.
Do you guys agree?
Yeah, I only auditioned for NCSA and Julliard and, while I was accepted to NCSA and went, it was a dissapointing experience for me. I should have looked into it more and found out where the best colleges were, and auditioned accordingly. My excuse was that I didn't have the information as to who was the best, but now there's the internet and you can do the research much more easily. Good luck!
