Posted: 5/5/05 at 3:09pmAlso surprised that Chitty music is not eligible for nomination. Wasn't Meet Me In St. Louis eligible for score and in fact nominated?

Posted: 5/5/05 at 3:17pmI guess the committee decided to stick by its original determination back in '84 that the entire Glengarry ensemble should be considered Featured.

Posted: 5/5/05 at 3:18pmI hope Victoria Clark get the Tony for lead actress. She really deserves it. Sutton already has one (and Little Women was a bore). Christina deserves a medal for doing Sweet Charity with a broken foot, but not a Tony.

Posted: 5/5/05 at 3:31pmthe ruling on score eligibility has done some weird things, like telling Tony voters that State Fair was eligible, but only like 6 of the songs. this all-or-nothing method is much better.

can anyone here comment on the score of the pillowman? does it stand a chance against the other potential nominees (bee, piazza, drs, spam, frogs, little women...)?? also, would the fact that they're saying the pillowman has a score mean that that score would be played in subsequent productions of the show? surely there are many plays that use original compisitions as music, but most times in a different production the music could be different, or even non-existant. this would never be the case with the "original score" of musical plays on broadway... i'm sure no one can imagine the light in the piazza being performed, but let's add in a different score for our production.
that ruling is strange to me.

Well, Tesori got her first Tony nomination for the score to a play.
I have to admit, I recall the music and thinking it was very appropriate...but it's not nomination-worthy, I believe, not when there are a horde of original scores with lyrics as well to choose from this year.
did they make an eligibility declaration on the Frogs?

Posted: 5/5/05 at 4:12pmThe Frogs was ruled as a new musical -- the score and book are eligible for nomination.

#14re: Tony Awards Committee Announces Final Eligibility for 2005 Nominations
Posted: 5/5/05 at 4:15pmI just think that's a mistake. They're blinded by their odd Sondheim love. Many of the Frogs songs have been popping around for years in various Sondheim reviews and whatnot...can they really show that (what is the general measurement?) 60% or whatever of the score is unknown?

Posted: 5/5/05 at 4:37pmbwaysinger, but it's also the fact that the show hasn't been performed since it's Yale production. It hasn't been established as a regular in the musical theatre repertoire or whatever the phrase is.

But many of the songs have, including the VERY well-known opening number. Also consider the release of its own album a few years back.

I am still itching to see The Pillowman...will they release a CD? J/k.
I think that there should be a category for best score of a play - I mean, how can a play's score compete with that of a musical?

Posted: 5/5/05 at 7:56pmSo, for those of you who have seen both GGGR & PILLOWMAN...who would you choose between Alan Alda & Stuhlburg ?? I believe they are the 2 front runners in the category. Anyone who has seen them both care to give an edge?

Posted: 5/5/05 at 8:03pmIs that a new rule about replacements not being able to be nominated? Because I know Larry Kert was a replacement in "Company" and he got a nomination
