if they can go on stage and do what is apparently tony worthy, then they can give a decent speech. being 13 is not an excuse, its not like they can't form their own sentences.

Funny how that works, as months of rehearsing and performing the same material time and again and one spontaneous shot at a live international broadcast of which you will not know you will deliver until the last possible moment are two entirely different things. Older people with far more wisdom and knowledge than the Billy boys have either screwed up or given very dull/perplexing Tony speeches and received far less vitriol and abuse. I found Ripley's grownup speech to be far more weird and annoying than the three young men who just realized they made Tony history moments before making their speeches. I gave them a little slack for dealing with what has been a very stressful and controversial topic for which they have been victimized by the press and the musical theatre "fans", yet are undeniably blameless.

Not all the winners were my personal picks, but I don't believe any of the choices were undeserved. I won't play the snubbed nominee game. We had a month of that already.

Biggest loser? Us... for having to read this moronic thread.

The only thing I can even remotely agree with is SingTopher's post.

"And lets face it, Shrek is an awful part in an average show! Just because you can wear heavy make up, heavy costume and stand on stage for a few hours speaking with an accent does NOT make you deserve a Tony, I could do that if I REALLY wanted to, but I wouldnt win a Tony!"

CONaries... are you seriously comparing you to Brian D'arcy James... Are you actually saying that "anyone" could go up there and do this role? Why don't you go home and dress yourself up as Shrek and sing some of the songs... If you sound half as good as Brian or have half of this charima and charm than maybe I'll consider what your saying. Shrek is a pretty good show. I don't love it and there are flaws, but it is better than some of the slop broadway has brought about in recent years. Brian deserved it over the Billys, but James Barbour deserved it over all of them.

To give you an example, go watch the movie "The Grinch." You could have put anyone into that costume, and anyone could have done that role. However, they wouldn't have the sparkle, charm, and facial expressions of Jim Carey. He made that performance a truly unbelievable one. Brian does the same with this role in Shrek. Just because you hate the show (And I don't see why) doesn't mean that Brian does a commercial job as Shrek. He brings life to the show and the character!

Just for the record... not bashing the Billy boys... THEY ARE INCREDIBLE! Just wanted to see an ACTOR win best ACTOR... haha Sorry!

Front Row, I do not accept your assessment. I loathe "Shrek" merely because I loathe what I perceive to be crass, derivative, hypocritical and in bad taste. I'm sure there are worse duds that have been out there, yes, no doubt about it, but I have been fortunate enough to have not seen them.

DramaMama, thank you.

skittles -
I have never seen West Side Story in a high school. And I never called Anita a "guaranteed award winner." But she has been nominated 3 out of 4 of major prods (Bway & movie) and won 2 of the 4. Yes, that's enough evidence that it tends to be an attention/kudos-getting role. Certain roles get nominated a lot (Mama Rose, Blanche Dubois, etc.) and Anita is one of them.

I think, Jane Fonda for 33 Variations and also 33 Variations itself. I found God of Carnage to be a loud melodrama full of screeching and screaming, and I don't see any form of range in Marcia's performance-nothing that stood out. Jane's performance in 33 was riveting from start to finish, as she slowly lost control of her own body. Brilliantly acted, and the play was just wonderful. I think, unfortunatly, people have not forgiven Jane for what she did back in the day, and do not care to appreciate her talen. Unfortunate.

Paulus not winning Best Direction.

But I guess winning Best Revival kind of made up for that.

"Personally, Marcia Gay Harden over Janet McTeer seemed criminal"

And once again the prejudice of drama over comedy rears it's ugly head. It ain't easy to make an entire theater roar with laughter. Ms Harden succeeds gloriously at it in "God Of Carnage".

Well while that may be true for some people, it's not true for me. You are talking to someone who lauded Julie White's performance in Little Dog a few years ago. She was much more deserving than anyone else, and her role was far more comic than Harden's. Plus, Harden has the most dramatic role of the 4 principals anyway. Her final scene shows that clearly. I did like her a lot. I just thought that Janet's performance was an acting master class. She definitely deserved the Tony over Marcia.

ColorTheHours048, I was at the ceremony. Trent wasn't being "cocky" by getting a head start. There was a lot of audience cheering and it was difficult to hear Audra. He also just did two physically demanding performances, as well as rehearsing all day (the morning dress and Elton's rehearsal).

Bundy5000, I don't know what you mean by how Trent represents himself. He isn't trying to be anything he is not. He is a talented kid and now Tony winner.

CSonBroadway, I also think Paulus should have won Best Direction, hands down. I'm upset about that, but also thrilled it won Best Revival.

And, for the record, all of the Billy boys are over 13. Kiril is 15, and the other two are 14. Not that it makes much difference. I thought their speech was completely endearing and I think they deserve to win. I would have been ecstatic if Gavin or J. Robert Spencer had won, and I also would have been satisfied with BDJ winning.

I think John McMartin has the most legitimate gripe.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

"if they can go on stage and do what is apparently tony worthy, then they can give a decent speech. being 13 is not an excuse, its not like they can't form their own sentences."

When young Daisy Egan won she was equally flummoxed. When she calmed down and gave a "real" speech and seriously thanked her agent, the audience laughed like she was telling a joke. They weren't expecting a kid to give the same kind of speech as an adult would.

If the Billys had gotten onstage and given a prepared speech some people would be criticizing them for being cold and heartless divas who believe that they are *entitled* to all the accolades.

*Whatever* they did they were bound to be criticized by those who don't think they deserved it.
