Posted: 11/11/19 at 8:19pmThe performers were wonderful but I think they were sunk by bad sitcom jokes and mediocre songs. My partner and I laughed once or twice. The rest...well, we couldn’t wait for it to be over.

I feel this show deserved a bit of a longer run. I wasn't crazy about the score but it served the show. Top to bottom, the cast delivered. It was nice to laugh that hard and feel that good leaving the theater. All the best to that talented cast.

Posted: 11/11/19 at 8:23pmPosted this in the real estate thread as well, but I remember reading on this board about the West End Joseph revival potentially transferring and wonder if this will indeed happen? Wonder if it will make a quick swoop in for this spring or hold off until fall? Huge fan of the show and Joseph would make a lot of sense size wise for this space as well, so would absolutely love to see this happen!

Basically yes, it’s playing at way too big a theater. If it was somewhere smaller and able to get the grosses it has had it might have been fine to run a while longer, but even making close to a million dollars some weeks, it was still far below gross potential and having to discount tickets steeply to try to fill the house."

This theater is just too large for most productions. I have no idea who owns what theater, but perhaps The Music Man will be next in there.

I don’t think it’s really fair to compare. The Prom and King King were seemingly hemorrhaging money for months before they closed, and likely only limped their way to August with the help of some deep-pocketed angel investors. Based on Tootsie’s numbers, I would guess they are cutting their losses much earlier, and closing right around the time that makes the most financial sense. If King Kong and The Prom had done the same, they probably would have closed much more quickly than Tootsie.

If THE MUSIC MAN ends up at the Marquis, I will post my ticket on StubHub. I always feel like I'm entering a shopping mall when heading up the long escalator to the theatre.

Nederlander owns the Marquis. Rudin only does business with the Shuberts (or Jujamcyn once in a blue moon), but NEVER Nederlander. Music Man will not take the Marquis.

I loved this show and had a blast even if my sight line was blocked by a a woman who kept shifting her big head every 60 seconds, so I could only see half the show with a craned neck every. I thought the book was clever with some of the most clever jokes, and I equally loved the silly hijinks. I was pleased to find out after seeing it that it won Best Book.
Really sad to hear. I hope to catch it again before it leaves

Wick3, my best educated guess is that he has worked with the people at the Shuberts more and can manipulate situations as he wants with them. Since he has that history, he relies on them for all his business so he can get what he exactly what he wants with as little pushback as possible. With him, it's ALL about control, so that's why he sticks with the people he knows he can manipulate.

This was the funniest show I saw in a long time; I think this would been a smash hit if it were a play. The score stopped the show in its tracks whenever it went big and loud and broad.
The Marquis isnt necessarily a disaster theater for the right show- i didnt see it, but i imagine On Your Feet fit in perfectly there. But Tootsie was clever humor, and Sarah Stiles and crew had to project to the rafters which undermined the experience (for me).
Thats not to say it would have been a huge hit in the Golden or Booth- maybe not. But i would bet money it would have been a sharper, tighter experience.

I liked the show and have been glad to see that it's improving in sales, which made me optimistic, but I think this was predictable for a long time. Jan 5 is a pretty popular closing time, and it's a little before they'd have to find replacements for the cast (the performers contracts expire end of February) so it makes sense they'd cut their losses then to avoid having to sign new people on for a show that would only last a few months more at least. I also think it will do well on tour - its a good show for a smaller scale and non-theatre people.
