Wow, that #tootsieisclosingparty thread on Twitter is a sh*tshow. And a real shame.
I really did enjoy the show. Laughed so much I forgave the forgettable score.
For some reason the Marquis never seemed that big to me. I didn't realize it seated 1602.

Yeah, it's sort of wild watching all the Twitter stans jump for joy because of the closing notice. Just wait till' Doubtfire comes in.

Do they even buy tickets to shows, or do they just watch bootlegs?

This show was very funny but sucked virtually every time anyone opened their mouth to sing or started dancing. While I agree that the theatre didn’t help, a smaller theatre would not have mattered, as the creative team did a mediocre job (minus the book)
While I don’t like to see people lose their jobs, etc., I don’t like to see people waste their hard-earned money buying tickets for this mediocre show. Plus, had word of mouth been good, it would have run longer. I know there are people on this board who loved the show, but I know about 15 or so people who saw it, and the absolute most common view was ‘meh’. Funny book, lousy score, cheesy sets, and choreography.

The Nederlander Org manages the theater, but they don't own it. The majority owner is Vornado (Daryl Roth's Husband's company.)

Just came here to say that hashtag on Twitter makes me sick. Their reactions don’t make them any better than the show they hated. It’s disgusting.
That’s all I want to say. I promise I won’t drag this on.

I was very excited to get tickets to this show but sadly had to cancel my trip.
I wasn’t a fan then when the Cast recording came out but perhaps it’s one of those shows you have to see to get drawn in.
I really didn’t understand the transphobic criticisms but until I see the script I cannot comment.
My general comment is that current transgender ideology seems to be erasing anything beyond another binary pre and post transition. It’s transformative/heteronormative. I find it disturbing that drag queens have been written out of ball culture in PoseFx
I checked the hashtag and it’s vile what’s wrong with people.

HA or they just listen to audio someone recorded....or they just don't see it, and follow what everyone else says.

I saw it in Chicago and posters here say there weren't many rewrites.
I'm still surprised by the praise being heaped on the book. The jokes were familiar and Michael's arc felt garbled. He starts out a self-entitled jerk and is punished for it. Then behaves the same way when he's Dorothy and is rewarded for it. Then sings a ballad about how Dorothy taught him to be a better person. Some important connective tissue was missing.

Ha! If Beetlejuice transfers here because Music Man will most likely be in the WG, it’ll prob be changed back to the DC/album line “Excuse me, sorry to barge in”

That's actually a brilliant idea---Beetlejuice doesn't seem to be losing momentum. Don't close it, just move it to the Marquis (no sarcasm I genuinely think this is a great idea).

He has The Lehman Trilogy opening at the Nederlander Theatre.

It would fit perfectly in the Marquis, too. The producers probably have no loyalty to the Shuberts since they’re kicking them out, so the switch to Nederlander isn’t out of the question.
The biggest ? would be if Beetlejuice wouldn’t want to downsize - the move is going to be expensive as hell and cost a week or 2 or 3 of performances, and then they’re going to end up in another barn of a theater. They better be really confident they’ll sell well for a long time to justify the move.
On the other hand, what other theaters will accommodate that massive set? They’d have to downsize/rebuild if they move to a smaller house, which I cannot imagine justifies the cost.

Great show, poor choice of theater.
Agreed. Loved the book, loved the score, loved the show. I'll catch it again on tour.
Regardless of anyone's personal opinion of the Marquis, it has been home to several long runs including Me and My Girl, Damn Yankees!, and Victor/Victoria.
Neither Damn Yankees nor Victor/Victoria recouped, however. I believe only 3 shows have recouped at the Marquis in the last 30 years (though I could be wrong): Me and My Girl, Annie Get Your Gun and The Drowsy Chaperone.
How long before the little nobody who wrote that ridiculous article about Tootsie being transphobic takes credit for this?
Oh, I've no doubt they already have.

The "transphobic" controversy was a tempest in a teapot. It received no coverage in major publications that would actually have affected general public opinion and ticket sales.
I think what really did the show in was a pretty bland marketing campaign that overestimated the ticket-selling appeal of the title.

I hated the show (almost left at intermission for the first time ever, very much felt it was the Joe Biden of musicals of last season), but that was just me.
Whatever my personal feelings are about the show, the Twitter response is abhorrent and I'm incredibly sad that folks are losing their jobs.

I really don't get the whole "they must be thrilled people will lose their jobs." Argument. That so obviously is not it. People are pleased to see their personal tastes "vindicated," or maybe to have one less lousy show (not saying this show is lousy, just the perception) and thus the hope of one more good one. People onstage and backstage move from show to show all the time, or don't get another gig after they leave a show all the time. It's about the show as a work of art/entertainment, not the ability of the people involved to find work. To me, that's pretty obvious.

It's always a shame when a show closes because people are out of a job. Even bad shows have a lot of hard work behind them. That's nothing to celebrate.
But. If people were genuinely offended by this show, or genuinely found it transphobic (as I know some people did), it is nobody else's job to tell others what they can or cannot be upset or offended by. Certainly there was some bandwagoning on this, but for those who it genuinely hurt I can understand why they might be pleased this story will no longer be told in this iteration. It's important to be empathetic and understanding to all and not take people's genuine complaints lightly, as so many here seem to have done throughout the entire Tootsie debate.

That, and the fact that the show simply wasn't perceived as a must-see show. Who was the audience? It's an old title with no relevance to today's market. Without that, there was nothing else compelling enough about it to make audiences want to see it (not an iconic score, sot a spectacle, no star power, etc.).

I don't think people were taking the complaints lightly at all. Quite the opposite. They were just pointing out that the justification for the complaints of the show being "transphobic" were mostly baseless (with the exception of that one t-shirt slogan that was pulled from the merchandise shortly after it appeared).
Which reminds me...the online shop for the Tootsie website doesn't have a program or poster. Are they all gone?

He is producing Lehman, but is not the lead producer on it. I should have been more specific, so that is on me! I'm not going to go through his full list (that would take WAY too long), but his last 14 shows that he has been the lead on have ALL taken Shubert houses. The 15th one back is The Crucible which had the Kerr (Jujamcyn).
I tried going back and finding the last time he was the lead producer and booked something at the Nederlander, and honestly could not find it. I am not as sure of what he was the lead producer on pre-Book of Mormon, but it is nothing since that point has booked Nederlander.
All this to say that just going based on my knowledge and the history of his productions makes me feel extremely confident that Music Man is NOT taking the Marquis.

I think they squandered a chance to push the rather fantastic cast, and it seemed that the marketing thought "Santino won the Tony!" was sufficient to make that case.
Ultimately the marketing campaign just seemed to settle on "It's funny!" which... isn't enough.
Considering the show got very good reviews with plum pull quotes and even won 2 Tonys, its failure to catch on really just goes to show that you can't predict what will or won't be a hit.
