Wow wow wow i love these kinda threads (i wish i could find the thread similar to this which had all the old theatres etc on from yesteryear)
Brilliant, keep em coming
Oh, Smaxie, that shot of the crumbling Helen Hayes breaks my heart all over again.
There's another picture of The Hayes being torn down that was taken from the inside of the theater. I can't find it, but it's incredibly haunting. It's so 'Follies'; you can almost see the ghosts walking around inside.
Wonderful, wonderful photos. Thanks so much for posting them.

wow, I never realized how much time square used to suck
This is so beautiful. I still get chills in Times Square, but now I'm sad that I'm too young (at 21) to ever have experienced it in this time...This was very powerful. Thanks for posting.
Thanks so much for the great pics of Broadway! My first trip to NYC was in 1988, when I was 23. Sure brought back a lot of memories.
Went to The Show Palace on 8th and 43th Street a few times on that trip. It was such a different time. The Show Palace is long gone.......The Westin is there now.

Well for everybody, like Patti Lupone, who longs for the days of a crime-ridden Times Sq, there was a big ruckus in front of the 42nd St theaters Friday night after Saww V, and 4 guys got stabbed in the neck---I'm sure Patti will celebrate a return to the good old days.

I curse the man who sold the Hellinger!
Wow, Brody, these are great! I made my first trip to NYC in December of 1979. My parents let me pick the shows, so I picked the only two I ever heard of; Annie and A Chorus Line. I saw the marquee for EVITA and thought it was about somebody's mother, so I passed. I've regretted it ever since. I remember walking down 42'nd street and being approached by a hooker. "Wanna date?", she said. I said, "Dad what is that all about", and he laughed. I also remember a go-go boy outside the Gaiety, and I said, "Dad, what is that all about?" and he just laughed. I was just an innocent 10th grader from WV whose mind was blown away! You took me right back to that special first trip to NYC! We even ate at Momma Leone's! Wow, memories!
Great photos. Thanks for sharing.

The gorgeous Mark Hellinger Theatre

The Mark Hellinger.
The stunning auditorium is there intact and in magnificent condition.
'A Chorus Line' the movie was filmed here!
PLEASE go along and take a look- the people from the Times Square Church will make you so welcome and you can wonder around the entire place at your will and click away!
My first Broadway theatre seeing 'Sugar Babies'!

Just to put out the word... I know the folks at the Broadway League would LOOOOOVE copies of photos like these. If for nothing other than to expand the quality of the Internet Broadway Database (IBDB.COM)
So donate, let your snap-shots become a part of Broadway history.
Thanks for the heads-up, GeorgeM. I just emailed IBDB.com to see if they would be interested in my photos, especially the Broadway, Alvin and Mark Hellinger. There are tons of A CHORUS LINE/Shubert Theatre photos out there -- no need to add mine.

Wait, so the church will actually let people in there to take pictures? I just might have to do that sometime. I would love to see it.

I guess it's not the best time to ask - with the current economy and all - but why would someone not buy back the Hellinger? You'd think someone like Disney or Lloyd Webber would attempt to buy it back. It's a gorgeous theater in a fairly good location.
I haven't been to New York since "Grand Hotel" opened.
I don't know if I would recognize the city anymore.
Thank you for posting them.
They make me feel like I'd come home.
The problem isn't getting someone to buy back the Hellinger, it's that the Times Square Church is not interested in selling.
AH yes the Broadway I miss! We now have a bastard child of a Disney Theme Park and Blade Runner set but hey, at least now I know where I can get all my Hello Kitty merchandise!
