Much to my surprise, I enjoyed this show quite a bit. At the end of the first act, I turned to my companions and announced ‘I can’t tell you why, but I am enjoying this’. On the positive side, I liked the staging, the use of a Greek chorus, some great voices, an interesting setup, incredible cast energy. On the negative, I don’t think they did enough with the outlaw aspect of the story itself, I thought that — in efforts to reach superhuman notes — it was frequently at the expense of incomprehensible lyrics, and neither leading lady made much of an impression. But I did enjoy it.
The second act was for me far superior, the leads really got their chances to shine, and it ended on a high. A few of the songs just made stronger impressions also. Bottom line…I would give this a solid B, which is more than I would give to several currently open hit musicals, e.g., Gatsby, Six, Aladdin, Hadestown, BOM (which I liked but think has already dated, Operation Mincemeat, (no interest in seeing Schmiggadoon, Lost Boys, BV Social Club) and a little further back Hell’s Kitchen, Harmony, Back to Future,
I doubt that it will be a hit, however…no stars, no names on the creative team, and my belief that it is a solid B. I do not think a solid B will catch on. Which is a shame, because there is a lot to enjoy and admire. But I have been wrong before…I hated Hadestown and thought it would last 3 Months.
My recommendation to people on this board…go while you ca; even if I am wrong and it becomes a big hit, you will never get better prices.
Final point: the audience went crazy for the performers at the curtain call, as much as anything I have seen probably since the oriiginal cast of Hamilton. I suspicious, however, because they seemed too pumped before the show even started. Maybe because they were getting such a bargain.
