I have to admit that this soundstome like the stupidest idea ever for a musical, which leads me to conclude that it is either going to be incredibly bad or incredibly brilliant. I am hoping for brilliant, as I like all three leads (I saw Carmen Cusack a decade or so ago in a revival of South Pacific in St. Louis and thought that she was far and away the best Nellie Forbush I had ever seen and probably tied with Donna Murphy for the best R&H heroine I had ever seen, which says a lot more). I guess we will know whether it is brilliant or a disaster after the first preview.
"
Based on the writers attached, it literally could be either.
Best Musical: Girl From The North Country Best Revival (Musical): Company Best Lead Actress (Musical): Sharon D. Clarke (Caroline, Or Change) Best Lead Actor (Musical): Rob McClure (Mrs. Doubtfire)? (Probably riding off of the success of Santino Fontana in Tootsie) Best Featured Actress (Musical): Patti LuPonne (Company) Best Featured Actor (Musical): Danny Burstein (Moulin Rouge) Best Director (Musical): Marrianne Elliott (Company)? (My pick for Best Director Of A Musical has not won since 2015, so it'll prob go to Alex Timbers for Moulin Rouge) Best Book (Musical): Jagged Little Pill (if it cleans up all of the plot lines) or Girl From The North Country or Flying Over Sunset (which I have a feeling we might all be sleeping on) Best Score: Six or Flying Over Sunset Best Scenic (Musical): Moulin Rouge Best Costume (Musical): Moulin Rouge Best Lighting (Musical): Moulin Rouge or Company Best Sound (Musical): Moulin Rouge or Company Best Choreo: Moulin Rouge Best Orchestrations: Girl From The North Country or Moulin Rouge (just for the amount of work combining the entire 2010's pop catalogue into an hour long score)

The London production competed in the musical categories at the Oliviers. I suppose anything's possible and the Tonys could decide to go their own way, but I think it's a safe bet it'll be considered a musical here too.
Rob McClure is definitely going to be a strong contender for Mrs. Doubtfire. Can see the show picking up quite a few noms (book, costume and scenic design) and also for score by default even though it wasn't the strongest part of the show.
I can't see Mrs Doubtfire winning or even nominated for anything. Compared to shows I have seen this week in NY, the quality just doesn't stand up. It is funny, but the songs are terrible. I finally saw Moulin Rouge last night (Dec 25) and I don't see how people can discount this so out of hand. It is the best Broadway show I've seen so far this week. Tina was very good, but this was better. Alex Timbers' direction for sure deserves recognition here. I also thought Karen Olivo was wonderful. She should get a nomination.
Edit: will see WSS in a couple days, forgot about the potential competition for director there.
I do know the Best Play field is going to be a tough choice.
I've seen The Inheritance, The Sound Inside, and Slave Play and could make a strong case for each of these deserving to win. Haven't even seen Lehman Brothers yet.
Love Rob McClure but I’ll be so upset if two consecutive cishet men win Tonys for playing a woman I'm gonna be so disappointed. Hoping for Isaac Cole Powell

Adrienne Warren (Tina)
Jenna de Waal (Diana)
Katrina Lenk (Company)
Sharon D. Clarke (Caroline or Change)
Elizabeth Stanley (JLP)
Possibility: Jeanette Bayardelle (GftNC)
Winners:
Rob McClure (Mrs. Doubtfire)
Danny Burstein (Moulin Rouge)
Patti LuPone (Company)
Nominees:
Aaron Tveit
Issac Powell
And maybe Sahr Ngaujah, Kathryn Gallagher and Lauren Patton with the 6 queens of Six getting special Tonys if not jointed"
I believe Mare Winningham will be the only eligible leading actress from Girl From The North Country, and she is a likely nominee. Every other actress in the show should be considered featured.

Not hoping for Isaac since I haven't seen WSS or Mrs. Doubtfire, but I second this.
I think Leading Actress in a Musical is going to be a three way horse race between Warren, Clarke, and Lenk.
Company and WSS are going to duke it out for Revival of a Musical.
Featured Actress is going to be between LuPone and Patten, unless they nominate the queens from SIX for a competitive award, which would be interesting and exciting.
On the play front, though I know it won’t happen, I wish Betrayal would pick up a few nominations. That was a truly gripping revival and I’ve never heard an audience so silent and pulled in like that in years.

Mare Winningham is the actress from North Country that they'll push for Lead, not Bayardelle. And I don't think you should write off Carmen Cusack in in that category.
The queens of Six will not be able to receive a joint nomination because there is a Tony rule against that type of nomination now. Unless they decide to take those 6 women out of competition and bestow them with a special Tony Award, they will have to compete individually.
And while I love Isaac Powell, no male actor from a Broadway production of West Side Story has ever been nominated for a major industry award, let alone win. So odds of him claiming a Tony are stacked against him. I can see the Lead Actor nominees being Rob McClure, Tony Yazbeck, Jay Sanders, and Harry Hadden-Paton...with both "romantic leads" (Powell and Tveit) left off once again.

Unless someone from a spring musical is surprisingly bumped into lead (or there is a tie in voting), there will only be 4 Lead Actor in a Musical nominees. I only count 8 eligible men (Daniel J Watts was just ruled featured for Tina).
I have trouble seeing Charlie Cox and Campbell Scott making the cut in Lead Actor when you have the three men from The Lehman Trilogy with amazing roles. Plus Mark Addy and David Morse will be very fresh in people's minds. But that category is truly ridiculous when you look at the number of people competing for those slots.

Depending on how the rulings go, I think we could get 9 eligible. Right now, we have 5 actors who are either confirmed, or virtually guaranteed as eligible:
-Isaac Powell
-Aaron Tveit
-Chris McCarrell
-Brenock O'Connor
-Rob McClure
Then, we have to wait and see about the following:
-Jay O'Sanders - could potentially go featured or leading depending on how they campaign
-Tony Yazbeck - we don't know yet if the role is more leading or more supporting
-Harry Hadden-Paton - same as above
-The kid from Caroline or Change - does anyone know if this role was considered leading or featured in the original production? I see he didn't get nominated. I haven't seen the show, but from listening to the cast album, Noah almost sounds like a co-lead.
-The actor playing Prince Charles in Diana - again, I have no idea if this role is big enough to place him in leading. Can anyone weigh in on that?
So I think it is POSSIBLE that we'll get 5 nominees. But you're correct that the odds may be against it. Because we'd need to get 4 out of those 5 "maybes" put in leading for that to happen, and that might be unlikely.
The Hollywood Reporter's review of ''Diana'' referred to Jeanna de Waal, who plays the title role, and Rob Hartrampf, who plays Charles, as the leads. I'd assume Rob is eligible for Best Actor.
As for ''Tina,'' did the show submit Daniel J. Watts, who plays Ike Turner, for Leading Actor? Or did the Tonys turn down the submission? In London, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, who played Ike there, actually won the Olivier for Best Actor in a Musical.
Best Featured Actress in a Play Ato Blankson-Wood – Slave Play Blair Brown – The Minutes Annie McNamara – Slave Play Lois Smith – The Inheritance Patsy Ferran – Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
I really hope Elizabeth Stanley from JLP is nominated (I would love for her to win, but I doubt it, unfortunately) for Best Actress in a Musical. As much as I love Lauren, Elizabeth was the real star for me. She was phenomenal and I hope she gets recognition for MJ. I also love JLP, so I hope it gets nominated, as well!
Best Actress in a Musical Shelly D. Clarke – Caroline, or Change Mare Winningham – Girl From the North Country Karen Olivio – Moulin Rouge Adrienne Warren – Tina! the Tina Turner Musical Shereen Pimentel – West Side Story
That should be: Sharon B. Clarke and Karen Olivo.
Best Actress in a Musical is ridiculously competitive. Besides the five named above, the field includes Carmen Cusack, Jeanna de Waal, Katrina Lenk, Elizabeth Stanley and Kristin Stokes.
As for Best Actor in a Musical, Aaron Tveit shouldn't be underestimated for ''Moulin Rouge!'': He's the leading man in this season's biggest new musical hit; Brantley raved about him in the New York Times and said Christian was a ''role [Tveit] was born to play,'' and Tveit's overdue for some Tony recognition, having been passed over for ''Next to Normal'' and ''Catch Me If You Can.''
