D'Monroe is still there? Holy crap, I saw him more than 2 years ago (as well as several other current cast members).
After reading these stories and seeing the pictures, I am afraid to stagedoor.

I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...

The whole idea of getting paper cuts on your FACE because people are shoving Playbills past you is enough to make me never want to go to the stagedoor at Rent, ever.

I'm kind of flabbergasted by the good reviews for D'Monroe and Justin Johnston. From D'Monroe's performance, I thought maybe he thought Benny was supposed to be a weird hybrid of a monkey, The Flash, and a really bad Michael Jackson impersonator. Someone get that boy some Ritalin.

Oh, he spoke? I must have missed that between the unnecessary, distracting jumping and running around on stage like a two year old.
I always find the costume changes weird. What made them think "Let's change Benny's jacket" or like...all of Maureen's outfits. It's not a big deal, I just wonder what made them feel the need to do that. Updated On: 8/1/07 at 11:51 PM
I don't know. That's like how they changed Bobby's suit in Company from Cincinnati to NY. But that was moving to an entirely new theater and stuff, so it's probably a different case. Maybe they just feel like updating certain pieces.
I'm still confused as to why that one poster thought Mark's scarf was different.

Anakela - not saying I approve of it, but in this craziness it is the only way to possibly "stage door". If meeting them is that important to a poster, you do what you have to do.

I... can't really talk about it yet. They were everything I had hoped they would be. I really just could not BELIEVE my eyes, my ears, anything, that this was actually happening. I feel so, so, so lucky. It was all such a rush. I will never, ever forget a moment of it.
The stage door was a mess. They really need to figure out a better method of crowd control, because someone IS going to get hurt. The fans are scary, and in such a large group, LITERALLY dangerous. I have no patience for the selfishness that goes on in these types of situations. You get what you want, you move -- you don't stay there shrieking for the next fifteen minutes. I've never seen anything quite like what went on there tonight. The stage door guards had to hold the barriers up at one point, because the crowd was close to knocking them over. Perhaps I'm just unfairly intolerant, but these fans are perhaps not only irritating, but rather, actually... kind of infuriating. They make what should be an enjoyable experience a total headache, and should be ashamed of themselves. And really, if they don't care what fellows fans think of them, they should care that they are blatantly disrespectful to the actors.
/soapbox.
Regardless, still one of the best experiences of my life, no exaggeration.
I saw the show tonight. It's been a while since I've seen Rent. The last time I saw it was with Drew Lawhoever and the guy from Taboo who's name I can't remember right now. There was massive amounts of applause, Adam jumped ahead some lyrics instead of sings "Who do you think you are..." and sang instead "Excuse me if I'm off..." realized what he was doing, turned his back to the audience then got back on. Everyone laughed. It was great seeing them on stage, and very enchanting.

I went to the matinee performance today as well, and while my stagedoor experience wasn't as painful as the other poster who went, it was still something I couldn't believe! When I originally bought tickets I bought them for the matinee, thinking that the crowds wouldn't be nearly as bad, but I was completely wrong! I certainly cannot blame Adam for not coming out at the stagedoor, but Anthony and Tamyra were such sweethearts! Anthony must have stayed outside 40 or so minutes! Everytime he came by he kept double checking that he got everything signed that everyone wanted and posed for pictures with everyone who asked. I wouldn't necessarily say that you have to miss the curtain call to stagedoor...it certainly helps if you have seats in the right orchestra or seats to the right in the center section, though. We has aisle seats on the left center and ended up being about 4 rows back from the barricades, but we made it work. I guess something that goes along with the stagedoor is patience, however that is easier said than done with the brutal crowds.
As for the show itself, I am so greatful I had an opportunity to see Adam and Anthony perform live. It's certainly as if those two never left! The only two things I did not like about the whole performance were D'Monroe and Nicolette Hart. I had seen D'Monroe previous to this perfomance and thought he was better then. Nicolette Hart's performance of Maureen was just awful. I don't know if I can pinpoint exactly what it was that I did not like, but she certainly has been my least favorite Maureen so far. I adored Merle Dandridge as Joanne and think she has a wonderful voice. Tamyra Gray, in my opinion, started off not so strong in the beginning, but by "Out Tonight" and "Another Day" I was sold! She did seem to have missed a stair on her way down, but she recovered really well. Tamyra and Adam had good chemistry together.
All in all, I just feel so lucky to have experienced this. This is certainly one of the best theater experiences I have ever had and a dream of a lifetime!
Wow, I'm kind of surprised nobody's liking Nicolette Hart either. I didn't like her "Over the Moon," but with the stupid choreography they seem to want all the Maureens to do now, the number seems pretty impossible (admittedly her timing was kind of awkward anyway). But I actually think I kind of enjoyed her--certainly more than the other two Maureens I've seen live. It was nice to actually see someone up there who wasn't just arbitrarily giving line readings and trying way too hard to be funny, and someone who had her own ideas (that were really a departure from what I've seen others try to do with the role) about the character and a sense of her arc. She wasn't exactly thrilling, but I did like her quite a bit.
I didn't even bother trying to stage door. I was just glad I got out of the theatre. It's seriously a fire hazard so many people were blocking doors being used as exits for us.
Overall I liked it. It's been a while since I've seen it. My review's in another post... But Nicolette as Maureen replaced Haven as my least favorite Maureen ever. UGH! I'm not saying Maureen has to look like Idina, but does she have to look like Lorrie Morgan?!?!? The short, bleach-blonde look just does not scream Maureen to me.
OTOH, I loved Merle as Joanne! :)
And Adam and Anthony...it goes without saying.

LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!
"I'm not saying Maureen has to look like Idina, but does she have to look like Lorrie Morgan?!?!? The short, bleach-blonde look just does not scream Maureen to me. "
Err...um...was THAT really your biggest problem with her? Why can't short, bleached-blonde hair be "Maureen"?
I thought Nicolette had some really funny, well timed moments. Like when she first pushed the button during OTM to playback the "leap of faith" recording. Other Maureen moments that are usually funny kind of left me flat, though.
Everyone seems to like Merle. I didn't dislike her - she's got a great voice, but she didn't have the endearing quality that I always thought Joanne has, underneath the tough exterior.
The morning star always gets wonderful bright the minute before it has to go --doesn't it?
I think I was just happy that she HAD a take on Maureen, haha. It was the first time I ever saw someone besides Idina Menzel have a take on Maureen. Updated On: 8/2/07 at 01:15 AM
Some girl actually tried to get in the car with them and the stage door guy who was helping them get through the crowd had to physically grab her and pull her out.
Um, I was there, near the car and didn't see that at all. Joking "OMG, I should get in the car" as you implied in your other post is hardly the same as leaping over the barricades to jump into the car with Adam.
AH. THERE you are orange! Tell me, what did I think of the show? I'm curious, since you have me all figured out.
Without getting into detail, I knew you would find a way to pick out the negative aspects of the show to post about instead of- I dunno- posting anything about the two performances you drudged yourself back to the Nederlander for the only time in years to see in the first place?
We saw Jesse in the soundbooth right before the show started. Chaos ensued when he came out the stagedoor with Adam. These screechy little girls in the front practically threw themselves at all of them. Repeatedly. At one point, security had to lift some girl up over the barricades and let her stand inside by the stagedoor because she was getting smashed. The security already have to brace the barricades against the onslaught, but that was insane. Adam, Anthony and Tamyra all looked concerned and asked if she was alright. siamese dream had commented the other night that it was like a mosh pit and I've definitely seen this same kind of thing happen at concerts where security have to pull people up onstage to keep from getting squashed. But on Broadway? Wow.
I happened to be walking out of the theatre at the same time as the producers and one of them commented "Oh my god, are they [crowd] all here for them?!" I mean, this is what they wanted, isn't it...?
