It must be said ! It's a sad sad state of affair's
would u like to elaborate why it has become a joke?
To sum up this years Tony's in a word: Embarrassing.
Embarrassing for Whoopi, who seems to have lost all of her ability to be funny. First on the Oscars, then last Sunday, all she seems to be able to do now is mock the nominees and the industry in general.
Embarrassing for the Tony's themselves, who have whored themselves out to corporate sponsors.
Embarrassing for the "Broadway Spotlight" presenters, no-name nobodys who chose their moments of national exposure to lamely read cue-cards and spout somebody else's platitudes.
Embarrassing for the nomonees, almost all of whom starred in godawfully bad musical selections. Not necessarily the numbers themselves, (except for the cast of GREASE), but in weakly-performed (especially XANADU) pieces that underwhelmed.
Embarrassing for George Wendt, who seemed so bored and ashamed of appearing in his spot that he actually GRIMACED at the end.
I will add that I loved the SOUTH PACIFIC sequence, and while IN THE HEIGHTS just wasn't my cup of tea, it was the the most exciting nominee.
I don't want cantstandbrody to contribute to this thread anymore. I'm already afraid for my life with the excess apostrophes already apparent. ;_;
Wow. MisterRussel is grumpier than Roscoe!

Eh. Another supposed lover of theater standing back and flicking his cigarette with disdain at the Tonys. Shall I trot out the Pansy Division lyrics again?

So if they've become a joke, can someone please tell us when the last time they had any integrity was?
Oh, Borstal, I've NEVER enjoyed the Tonys. A lesser distillation of theatre, watered down for the (m)asses.
I praised SP and ITH, didn't I?
Oh, and yes, I DO hate Whoopi.
well someone's an elitist.
if you have NEVER enjoyed them, why do you watch them?
No, I'm not an elitist. I jusy want my Tony Awards to not SUCK ... AGAIN.
Oh dear. Looks like I must:
(Borstal clears throat)
He thinks he´s oscar wilde, but he´s paul lynde
Can´t say anything good about anything
He flips his cigarette with disdain
You´ve failed to live up to his standards again
He´s a negative queen, he´s a negative queen
He reads all the latest magazines
He´s quick to follow, but thinks he´s in the lead
He was there and you weren´t
You´re out of it, you´re not current
He´s a negative queen, he´s a negative queen
He drips disdain, he´s lacking tact
He´s popular in a scene
Where being nice is a radical act
Everything´s got to be just so
If it´s not, he´ll let you know
Don´t put up posters on castro street
He´ll rip them down so he shop in peace
He´s a negative queen, he´s a negative queen
He struts into a bar with swagger
Stumbles out later with a stagger
Spent half his life in a bar
Now he looks so haggard
No sympathy for a braggart
Everything´s got to be just so
If it´s not, he´ll let you know
Darling, you simply haven´t lived
Unless you´ve lived like him
He´s a negative queen, he´s a negative queen

Ok, you use an apostrophe to pluralize "Tony's", but not "Oscars" or "nominees"? If you're going to be wrong, at least be consistent.
How did Whoopi mock the industry? Poking fun at nominees is what the hosts do in virtually every awards show, not just the Tonys. <---- note: no apostrophe

So you can spell "nominee" at the beginning, but not at the end? And the apostrophe in to pluralize "Tony's" again for that word and no other? Why do people do this? Where did they learn it? Bad convenience store signs?
As for your comments, most people agreed this was one of the strongest broadcasts in years.
Embarrassing for George Wendt, who seemed so bored and ashamed of appearing in his spot that he actually GRIMACED at the end.
Wendt ALWAYS grimaces when he smiles. Always. You can go all the way back through his career to his early Cheers episodes and see it. It has nothing to do with that particular spot. Poor example.

The Tony's suck. All award's suck. The Oscar's. The Grammy's.
Bird's suck. Bee's suck. Folk's who misuse apostro-FEE's suck.

There's no point in arguing about it.
There is only one clear solution: STOP watching! If you're going to bitch and whine about them, then just don't watch.
How stupid can you be.
No, I'm not an elitist. I jusy want my Tony Awards to not SUCK ... AGAIN.
But you said you NEVER enjoy the Tonys, so why would you ever think they would not SUCK...AGAIN? It sounds more like you're a masochist than an elitist if you deliberately watch something you never enjoy year after year.
Mister Matt you never cease to amaze me and make me laugh!
I thought they were great.
Perhaps it was the company: I was watching with my friends. You were watching with YOU.
I thought the Tonys were better this year than they've been in the past couple of years.
Whoopi was a terrible host.
I wasn't crazy about them this year. But some years have been a lot worse... As far as performances go a lot of people i was watchign with thought Xanadu's was better then most.
I'll take the Tony's over the Oscars any day.
I enjoyed them also. I thought Whoopie was quite funny and a good host.
I agree.
