I did a pretty comprehensive search and didn't find anything about it, but I wanted to know if anyone's heard anything about Adam Guettel's next project? I remember he announced after he won the Tony that he was working on something about pirates. Is that still in the works?
Don't get too anxious, my friends. After Floyd Collins blew my mind in '97, I waited...and waited...and waited for The Light in the Piazza, only to have it stall after Seattle, and then again after Chicago. I waited through multiple collaborators and multiple workshops, all frustratingly spread out over several years.
I often think of that when I see new threads pop up every two or three weeks about the latest casting news for Young Frankenstein or The First Wives Club. Adam Guettel makes those projects look like they're progressing at light speed.
But as they say, if it's worth having, it's worth waiting for. He writes music like Sting has sex. I imagine the quality is uniformly high.
of course not, which is why I said "I imagine", but I've heard he's really into the tantric thing...slow, slow, slow -- but from all accounts, worth every second.
I will die a happy man if I have to wait another 20 years for Adam Guettel's next score. As long as I hear it before I die, my life will be complete.
If I recall, there was supposed to be a suite of the "Princess Bride" score performed a few months ago. I only heard about it once, though. Can anyone confirm/deny?
They did a short workshop of the music only in November. Matt Morrison, Michael Beresse and Mara Davi were among the cast. They really just were working out the music though-not even any lyrics yet. SLOW process.
Count me in as someone else who will wait as long as it takes. I wish more time was taken to develop other shows. I'm sick of seeing thing that have so much potential yet fail to make the mark. (High Fidelity, Little Women, etc.) Although time doesn't fix everything! But I trust Adam Guettel. What I've seen of his work so far the wait will definitely be worth it.

A little of the music has leaked out. Guettel often writes music on "ah" for the vocal line (several of those "ah" passages remained in Piazza, you'll notice). I think Audra premiered a song of his once like that.

B3TA07...THE PRINCESS BRIDE SUITE had its World Premiere at The Hollywood Bowl in September. It was performed as part of John Mauceri's farewell concerts. THE PRINCESS BRIDE SUITE, written by Adam Guettel, was orchestrated by Larry Blank...orchestrator of THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, FAME BECOMES ME and WHITE CHRISTMAS.
