Most of my friends and co-workers know very little about musicals, plays, and the happenings of Broadway. So, I took a list of the shows people here are seeing, narrowed it down to the ones they liked most based on the show’s name recognition, and the one of they’d like to see most was “Tootsie”. Looks like I might be seeing “Tootsie” for my birthday. :)
Really stuck between Burn This and Ink. If I have the room for a trip, I plan to see both and maybe Gary as those are my top 3 right now. Its odd, and its not a bad problem to have, but Ive never had this difficult of a time deciding. I feel there are a lot of shows that are in some ways must sees in terms of story, acting, staging, etc. Im leaning towards Burn This. The play seems fantastic, Adam Driver is my favorite actor, so I feel I can't miss this. Ugh!!!
Have seen: Ain't Too Proud Be More Chill (saw it Off-Broadway, but close enough) The Cher Show King Kong The Prom American Son Choir Boy The Ferryman The Lifespan of a Fact Network To Kill a Mockingbird Torch Song The Waverly Gallery
Have upcoming tickets to: Beetlejuice Hadestown Kiss Me Kate Oklahoma Tootsie Gary Hillary & Clinton
Waiting for formal reviews of: All My Sons Burn This Ink King Lear
(Ink is probably the most likely, if I bite the bullet on one of these)
And I had tickets to True West but accidentally fell asleep at home and missed it. Feeling like a champ about that one, haha.
(Also saw Alice By Heart, Clueless, Girl From the North Country, The Other Josh Cohen, School Girls, and Smokey Joe's, and have tickets next week to Superhero, if we're counting Off-Broadway.)
That's really all I can think of right now. I might want to try the Wicked lottery to see Jessica Vosk one more time before she announces her end date but I saw her so it's okay if that doesn't work out.

Kinky Boots (again) American Son The Waverly Gallery Torch Song The Lifespan of a Fact Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish The Band’s Visit (again) Network Kiss Me, Kate The Ferryman Superhero Dear Evan Hansen
Unless work sends me back to NYC before then, I’ll likely have to wait until later this year to return to NYC. Here are the shows I still most hope to see this year:
- [ ] To Kill a Mockingbird - [ ] Oklahoma! - [ ] Hadestown - [ ] Tootsie - [ ] Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune - (unlikley because it closes August 25) - [ ] Moulin Rouge! - previews begin 6/28/2019 - [ ] Tina - previews start Fall 2019 - [ ] Jagged Little Pill - previews start Fall 2019 - [ ] Company - [ ] Hamilton (might revisit) - [ ] The Cher Show (Maybe)
To tide me over, I’m seeing some touring or local productions. Some here in Oklahoma City and some on my work travels:
Falsettos (Sacramento) - March 13 Waitress (OKC) - March 19 Hair (Lincoln, NE) - repertory company - it’s sold out, but I hope I can grab a cheap seat - March 27-29
A Bronx Tale (OKC) is playing OKC starting tomorrow and is selling horribly (over 600 tickets still available for tomorrow alone). Still trying to decide if it’s worth my time to grab a discounted $26 front row balcony seat in that huge theater."
So since my initial post, I’ve been able to confirm:
Hair - Nebraska- ($39.50, General Admission!) March 29th
Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - April 6th - local production in OKC, cheap seat ($30, second row orchestra) but wondering if I’ll be disappointed after seeing it on Broadway
Bright Star - April 12th - another cheap seat ($31, front row in a black box theater), regional production

I'm on the fence. As a Jewish person I feel like I should be more excited about it, haha... but just can't seem to gather the enthusiasm.
Pros: Everyone says it's amazing... there's something to be said for that. Cons: I just find Fiddler so boring! I was squirming through like 90% of the recent Sher revival, even though I love Danny Burstein. The music is so uninteresting to me for the most part, and the story is tired.
What is it about this production that makes it so must-see?

I understand your hesitance. I saw a touring production of it maybe 10 years ago. I sat in the mezzanine of the huge Tulsa Performaning Arts Center where there really isn’t a bad seat. Still, I walked away thinking it was..okay.
But the reports last year of this new revival moved it to the top of my list. I was able to sit front row center and for the first time the show felt vibrant and emotionally engrossing. The cast is uniformly excellent especially Steve Skybell as Tevye. This and The Band’s Visit (second visit) were my favorite shows on my trip last month (which also included Network; Kiss Me, Kate; The Ferryman; Superhero; and Dear Evan Hansen - second trip).
My apologies. I’m more fanboy than critic so I can’t always verbalize eloquently why a show does (or doesn’t) work for me. I just know I’m glad I saw it.
JudyDenmark, I also had a similar conundrum last month regarding Choir Boy. As a gay man, I felt like I should support Choir Boy with my attendance, but feeling mandated to do something doesn’t necesssrily lead to enjoyment. So I saw Superhero and Dear Evan Hansen (again) instead in my final two slots. Even if I have a disappointing time at a show, I rarely regret seeing it. There’s always something to admire. I wasn’t a big fan of the current revival of My Fair Lady, but I finally got see Norbert Leo Butz live! And so it goes with Superhero. Despite some winning performances and scenes, the show itself is a misfire. But I got to meet Kate Baldwin afterwards! And I realized that as good as DEH was again, I realized no subsequent trips will likely better my first trip to the Music Box. So if i ever see it again, it’ll be when it eventually tours near me. I might’ve been better off subbing in Choir Boy for one of those two shows, but I’ll never know so I’m at peace with what I chose to see.
Fair enough! That all makes sense. Life's a little busy for the next couple of months, but if I can find a good date and a reasonable price, I do think it's worth checking out just based on the overwhelmingly positive buzz.
(FWIW, I'm seeing Superhero next week and can't say I'm jumping up and down based on buzz... but to your point, there's almost always something great to take away from a production. I think Kate Baldwin will be that thing for me too, haha.)
Yes, I was front row center and it was great being so close, especially to a performer like Kate. At “stage door”, Kate said she had actually seen me with my Dear Evan Hansen scarf in the front row. Lol. There are also other things to commend it, mostly in Act 1. I think you’re smart going in with lowered expectations.
Already saw Frozen, Wicked and Waitress. Have tickets to first preview of Beetlejuice. Going to see Hadestown, Jagged Little Pill and Beautiful at some point.
I live 2.5hrs away though and am in the city 2 times a month. Maybe more.
I saw five shows in three days in March. Hope to get back in the fall.
Saw:
Cher Show (solid cast, terrible book--won the lottery and was right behind the conductor-seeing the sheet music/musical cues was more fun than the show itself).
Kiss Me Kate (worth is for the extraordinary voices alone)
Fiddler on the Roof--lovely production...highly recommended. Quietly moving.
Avenue Q (one final visit before closing)
Waitress (second visit--took my daughter, who lives on LI now--she was thrilled the see the movie's Ogie playing him on stage).
Be More Chill --4/2 Have to get tickets to my birthday shows--I've decided to see Waitress with Shoshana Bean and Jeremy Jordan (I've never seen him in anything!) and Hadestown. Very excited!
I live in LA, so I don’t get to see everything I’d like to see on Broadway/in NYC. But we are on out first NYC trip of the year right now! We saw To Kill a Mockingbird tonight, and am trying to rush Fiddler tomorrow afternoon.
As for the rest of this trip, we have tickets for:
The Ferryman
Hadestown
Sea Wall/A Life
Burn This
The Band’s Visit
White Noise
Already have a quick return trip planned for May, with tickets bought for Octet and Socrates... waiting for reviews of newer shows to decide what goes in my last slot! Love reading all of the reviews here, I am so damn hyped for Hadestown already.
