For me... the perfect singing voice hands down is...
LINDA EDER
and if I had to pick a male I would say John Barrowman. (and damn is he a hottie! and a cheeky monkey too!)
"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."
Lea Salonga's voice is as pure as it gets. It's never nasal, always clear, and she inunciates very well, which is very important when you are telling a story through song. It's quite amazing that her voice only got better with age. She must take care of it well.
Lots of good people on this thread, including Alice Faye, Alex Gemignani, Barbara Cook and Streisand when she wants to be.
I'd add Mark Kudisch, Michael Winther and Sally Wilfert. No fancy vocal doodley-doos, just purely beautiful and expressive.
Another performer one might overlook is Eddie Korbich. He's best known for comedy songs, but the few times I've heard him sing 'legit' or ballads, he's been superb. A very high voice.
"Hurry up and get into your conga clothes - we've got to do something to save this show!"
I guess I might be in the minority, but when I think of a pure voice, I don't necessarily think light, classically trained soprano sound. I think of a natural, perfect sound, a voice not overly trained, unaffected by years of classical training. Some of the singers noted above with years of classical training do have a beautiful sound, but to me its more of a manufactured sound and purity tends to get lost in the picture...
Versatility plays a role here too. There's really only one singer that fits my definition and thats Linda Eder. She has a beautiful unaffected soprano sound, and has had virtually no formal training. At the same time she's also a great belter. And although she has her strengths and weaknesses too, she can sell a broadway showstopper, a quiet standard, a classical aria, pop, country, jazz and sound really good in each area. Only a truly pure voice is able to do that IMO while at the same time having near perfect pitch and tone without really any training.
Lea Salonga's voice i believe is the most pure nowadays. It is perfect in every way! rebecca luker is fabulous as well, especially in the secret garden. and anthony warlow has the best male voice i think i have EVER heard.
