Marion Cotillard could play Fredricka...lol.
But I think that Lansbury and CZJ are pretty suitable to reprise their roles on film considering their names etc.

Love Anne Hathaway, but I think she'd need to wait a couple of years to play Charlotte. I think she's a little young.

I would love to see Anne Hathaway play against type and take a crack at Petra.

Regardless of casting, the bigger question is the script. How close does one veer to or from the play? The last attempt to open it up for film wasn't exactly a smashing success.

wonderfulwizard11 the way I see it Charlotte should be younger than Desiree.

I'm fine with Charlotte being younger thand Desiree, but Anne Hathaway looks more appropriate, age-wise, for Anne or Petra. Unless someone relatively young were cast as Desiree, she just looks a little too young.

Of Course. Why do you think I put Marion Cotillard as Desiree? And if I were filming it I would not film it on location. I would film it with these stars on an actual stage in front of an audience. If you film it on location it probably won't work.

I'm seconding Jordan's questioning of the OP's inclusion of Linda Hunt.
Phenomenal actress but probably one of the last women I would think of as having once been a courtesan to kings.

With Zeta-Jones off the scorecard thanks to PJ, we slot in Bernadette Peters as one of the shoo-ins?

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Loretta Swit as Charlotte?

^ Or, while your avatar is reminding me, Carol Channing for Mme. Armfeldt?

For those who think Anne Hathaway is too young for Charlotte may I remind everyone that Anne Hathaway is 28 years old. The character of Anne in ALNM is supposed to be 18 years old while Petra is only a few years older.

I would love to see Kate Winslet as Desiree and Meryl Streep as Mme. Armfeldt . Bring Make Up artist and Art Director Phil Ivey out of retirement and he could do wonders on making them look age appropriate.

At this point I don't think either Winslet or Streep would need to be "aged" to play the roles of Desiree and Madame Armfeldt. Meryl is old enough to be Kate's mother, being 26 years her senior.

Anne Hathaway looks too young to talk about being at an age where the most action she's gonna get is being pinched on the bottom at a village fete.
I think Martha Plimpton would be a better Charlotte.
