Oh, JRB, I am sorry. Just not a fan of Shirley Jones!
And let me clarify to say that I had 2 lists--the worst musicals ever in recent history (as in, empirically, generally accepted as bad) and then the ones *I* thought were the worst, in my opinion. And the last two (MUSIC MAN and OKLAHOMA) I knew people would be like, "WHAT THE HELL?" about. lol. Those two were just not my taste. But I can understand how they WOULD be to other people's tastes. They're not badly written, they just.... do not interest me in the least.
It is, however, the people who love CHITTY and BKLYN that I don't get at all. (Don't throw things at me for saying that!!)
Dark, horror of darkness my darkness, drowning, swirling around me crashing wave on wave--unspeakable, irresistible headwind, fatal harbor! Oh again, the misery, all at once, over and over the stabbing daggers, stab of memory raking me insane.
Love Kander & Ebb but HATED The Act. Nothing but a flimsy vanity project for Liza. My first Broadway play, and I could barely stay awake. Thank God it didn't keep me from coming back.
Add me to the list of people who can't understand how someone could put OKLAHOMA! or KISS ME KATE on any list of worst musicals.
At the top of my list is URBAN COWBOY (the only show I have ever walked out of) and MAMMA MIA (stupid, stupid, stupid). I also did not personally like THE PRODUCERS, LION KING, or HAIRSPRAY, but I would never classify them as bad musicals. Just not my cuppa tea

I hate Oklahoma, don't really like Carousel that much and I HATE THE MUSIC MAN, and I can say that cause I have been in it. THAT MUSIC REALLY GETS TO YOU, Kiss me kate is pretty annoying as well. South Pacific kind of gets to me also.

PASSION is droning, redundant, and unintentionally funny. The audience I saw it with started to flee as soon as the curtain closed; the actors had to take their curtain calls with half the audience in the aisles. Donna Murphy was the only reason I stayed through the whole thing.
I ask in all honesty/What would life be?/Without a song and a dance, what are we?/So I say "Thank you for the music/For giving it to me."

What we really ought to be debating is either "the worst musical ever produced on Broadway," or "the show you personally can't stand."
Better yet would be a list of all musicals ever nominated for the Best Musical Tony, and a discussion of the worst of the worst of THAT list. I'm too lazy to generate that list, so I'll leave it to one of you with more time on your hands.
This thread needs to die, because as people keep mentioning shows like OKLAHOMA and SOUTH PACIFIC - and even CAROLINE OR CHANGE, musical theatre as an art form as we know it is DYING. I would like to know the age of the people that think those brilliant classic shows (not COC) are the WORST. And the BEST. Then we might have some sort of answer as to why MAMMA MIA is still running.

There is a great divide between what is a bad musical and what musicals I hate. I truly dont need to see another production of Oklahoma because I've seen SO many, and didn't like the revival. I DO recognize that it is great theater, but not my cuppa any more. I have seen train wrecks that someone decided to put on the stage, however: Aint Broadway Grand Urban Cowboy (the only time I've ever left at intermission) Thou Shalt not (wait a minute, left that time as well...the Tugboat song did me in)

I would say out of what I've seen, Brooklyn is the only show that I went in thinking, It will be a good show, only to be stuck or trapped was the feeling I had when the show was only 1/2 hour into it. I still don't understand it. The music was too loud to be enjoyable and the talented people I didn't give a care about. Might have work if it had been a rock concert.

I for one LOVE bad shows. I had such a good time at shows like Good Vibrations and Dance of the Vampires because I went in with expecations of seeing something horrible, which is exactly what I got. The reason why these shows were bad? The dramaturgical aspects of the pieces, whether it was poor character development, poor dialogue, etc. You can't possibly put such shows as South Pacific, Kiss Me Kate, The Music Man, Passion, etc. in the same boat as these dramaturgical nightmares.
Now...as far as the worst of the worst: Dracula. I went in expecting to enjoy myself in yet another bad musical, but instead, I saw something that was overall bad. I couldn't even make fun of it. I just felt sorry for the actors involved in it, especially Kelly O'Hare and Melissa Errico who couldn't even make the show worth watching by baring a little skin.
I'm sure you were not referring to me, Aspects. I never asked anyone for their opinion, and never referred to you in my post. I was commenting on my opinions.
