In the 1960's, as a young teenager, I bought my first 33 1/3 rpm record of a Broadway musical.....the movie version of "The Music Man" with Shirley Jones and Robert Preston.  I still listen to that recording on my MP3 player, and enjoy it every bit as much as I did more than half a century ago.

What Broadway musical recording (in any format) was the first that you owned, and why did you choose that musical?

My first actual Broadway recording was the OBC of "Purlie" on vinyl.

My first non Broadway Cast recording of a movie based on a Broadway show was the "Oklahoma" film soundtrack on vinyl.

I don't remember the first one I bought myself, but the first one I heard, which set off this crazy idea of working in musical theatre, was Jesus Christ Superstar. The original brown-cover album, on an 8-track. Even back then (this was the '80s) it was a little old, so the tape dragged a bit, making the angels sound low and spooky. I was hooked.

Pretty sure the first one i remember hearing was Two by Two. First one purchased? Probably A Chorus Line. (OBC)

It may have been Into the Woods. The previous cast recordings I had before that were from London.

A high school production of South Pacific is the first musical I ever saw on stage and it lit the fire. That movie soundtrack was my first purchase of a musical. Then My Fair Lady - the London Cast because it was stereo but still Julie, Rex, Stanley and Robert. First Broadway cast recording was Camelot or Hello, Dolly.

I can't remember how old I was when I bought my first OBCR,but I grew up in a home full of music, thanks to my parents. The first one I remember hearing was Fiddler on the Roof. My dad started teaching me some of the lyrics when I was about 4. Wonderful memories...I miss him every day.

The first I purchased was A Chorus Line OBC on vinyl. It was my first show, although it was a tour production.   (It would be years later when I saw my second show)   However, my parents or Grandmother (can't remember) already had in the house, Fiddler On The Roof OBC on vinyl.

My parents had the original Jesus Christ Superstar album on LP (the "Brown Album"), but the first one I remember owning myself was the original cast recording of Phantom of the Opera.

My mother told me that when I was 2, I would stand in front of the record player and listen to the OBC of "Oklahoma!"

My memory tells me it was Applause.  Looking it up on IBDB, Applause opened in 1970, the year I graduated from high school.  There must have been earlier OBC records.

The first OBC recording I bought myself was PIPPIN, but the first I remember listening to was my parents' reel-to-reel of FLOWER DRUM SONG.

My first Musical recording was the unoriginal cast recording in mono of South Pacific starring Susan Shaute and Richard Torgi. These were budget albums sold in thrift stores for 99 cents which was way cheaper than the then usual price of $3.98 which was a lot of money back then, the 50s. I had to contend with them unti My very first original broadway album which was The Music Man in full stereo. Updated On: 10/25/20 at 11:59 PM

My first OBCR was a cassette tape of Annie, which my parents bought because of how much I loved “play practice” for my kindergarten production.
A year or so later, we bought the Beauty and the Beast OBCR CD in the theatre after seeing the show (my first Broadway show AND my first CD).

Cassette: Cats (Broadway)

CD: Miss Saigon (OLC) - I bought this and a CD player just to hear the two tracks that were only on the double CD
