CHESS Sets June 21 Closing

Sad.  I would've gone back to see Jojo.

THE LOST BOYS Previews

And for those wondering, yes. Shoshana gets to set the dinner table here. A lot."

If I had a nickel for every Shoshana Bean show I've seen where she prepares some sort of food item, I'd have three nickels -- which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened three times.

THE LOST BOYS Previews

Grading on a curve because it's a first preview, I generally enjoyed the show.  I think Act II is stronger/tighter/better than Act I, which isn't usually how I feel about first previews.  That said, Act II did feel a little rushed, and I think the production would do well to trim some fat/extraneous scenes (esp. in Act I) and build out the climax of the show.  Also, there's a post-bow Easter Egg/scene, so don't leave the theatre early.

My biggest issu

Back to Chess Previews

Serious question, do we think they hired a Russian dialect coach?  Because the only actors who had passable accents were Bradley Dean and the ensemble member who plays the Soviet chess player at the end.  At no point did I think Anatoly was actually Russian.  (Or Svetlana, for that matter.)

That said, +1 to the Nic Christopher fan club.  Anthem alone is worth the price of admission.

I have mixed feelings about Lea.  I saw the 2022 concert wit

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON Heading to Broadway Next Season

I liked this more than Mincemeat, which isn't saying much because I loathed Mincemeat.  I found Button tolerable, but the book/adaptation is not great -- or at least not entirely thought through.  I went in expecting "Cornish folk" (or so the marketing suggested), and I came out wondering if "Cornish folk" is code for "generic Celtic."

Poor Sabrina Carpenter out here catching strays.  Lest we forget, her acting career is longer than Rachel's...

Plus, I think she'd do a mean "I'm Hopeless When It Comes to You."

2025 Tony Awards Reactions Thread

For the show performances, I felt like this was one of the weaker years broadly speaking:
- Death Becomes Her: underwhelming and messy
- Just in Time & Real Women Have Curves: not a great song choice
- Sunset & Gypsy: maybe these work better in context? I am seeing both this summer but haven't seen either yet. They were interesting but also not quite the moments I feel like people thought they'd be
- Dead Outlaw: wild but

Jamie Lloyd-helmed EVITA revival to play the London Palladium in 2025

Will Rachel Zegler relate to the lyric "A shame you did it all at twenty six / there are no mysteries now / nothing can thrill you, no one fulfill you"?

SMASH Reviews

I think Adam Feldman's review is about where I'm at.  The show should flunk on the merits (book, direction, cutting off the music and adding some meh new songs).  But I had a good time watching a hot mess.  Sober, even.

2025 Olivier Awards

If this Fiddler prod comes over to NYC, I wonder if they'll be able to get the full effect of that gorgeous set.  There was something special about watching the show in the slightly chilly open air of the Regent's Park greens, listening to "Sunrise, Sunset" as the sun goes down in the horizon.  Curious to see how this plays over at the Barbican.

2025 Olivier Awards

Lesley Manville saying Tom Hiddleston is "nice" and exclaiming "I'm single!" took me out.

SMASH Previews

This may prove to be a fiery hot take, but I actually thought the show worked quite well with Katie Webber.  You could not tell she had only three hours of rehearsal in the role.  Katie was entirely off-book, and was just absolutely terrific.  But setting all that aside, I actually like the idea of a veteran actor who's put in her time but losing a bit of her shine trying something new to fend off the threat of an ingenue usurping her role.  Caroline was the stronger v

West End OEDIPUS To Transfer To Broadway

I found the first third of the play tediously boring (to the point where I was watching the clock and wondering "where have I seen her before" about Phia Saban), the second third moderately interesting, and the last third exhilarating.  So, I suppose the buildup worked.  The writing wasn't my favorite.  But strong acting by Mark Strong (teehee) and Lesley Manville, and excellent work by their intimacy coordinator (IYKYK).

I don't think I nee

Front row orchestra for Gypsy?

The front row of center orch is fine.  Because the stage extends out with the passerelle, you really only have to crane your neck slightly when the actors are on the passerelle.  Otherwise, the stage is set back a bit, and you have a nice view of the whole stage.  (Note, however, Rose's Turn is done on the passerelle for most (?) of the song, which means you will be looking up at Audra.  I actually liked it better this way, but YMMV.)

Donald Trump Takes Over the Kennedy Center

Call_me_jorge said: "So, the President doesn’t actually have the legal authority to fire all the trustees, en masse. It’s a bipartisan board and every trustee serves for 6 year terms; there’s no “at the pleasure of the President” stipulated. This is just another one of Trumps stunts to distract us from Elon Musks raid on the federal government."

The statute doesn't need to say board members serve at the pleasure of the President; Seila Law recognizes the President's plenary authority to dismiss individuals exercising executive power.  (And the KC board isn't legislating or exercising judicial power, so its quasi-governmental functions must be executive in nature.)  The only exception is requiring for-cause dismissal for independent commissions per Humphrey's Executor, and that's probably on its way out soon.

I find Trump's intrusion into the artistic independence of the KC repulsive, but this is probably one of the least problematic things he's done, from a legal standpoint.  Even Deborah Rutter recognized as much.  Per the Washington Post:

“Per the Center’s governance established by Congress in 1958, the chair of the board of trustees is appointed by the Center’s board members,” Rutter wrote. “There is nothing in the Center’s statute that would prevent a new administration from replacing board members; however, this would be the first time such an action has been taken with Kennedy Center’s board.”

GYPSY Previews - most important question

Just wanted to add my $0.02 re:  the 12/1 evening performance.

Audra:  Phenomenal.  I was skeptical about her voice being a mismatch for the role, but with the acting, it works.  And the acting is otherworldly good.  Received a well-deserved standing O post-Rose's Turn, except for one celebrity in the audience who was rather ... icy and stayed seated.

Danny:  Still finding his Herbie, I t

CABARET at the Kit Kat Club (2024) Opening Night Critics' Reviews

Thanks, chrishuyen!  I appreciate your insight, which I largely agree with.  I definitely agree with your assessment that Adam and Auli'i are worth a watch, even for those who've seen the original Broadway cast.

One thing that I find fascinating is how we, the audience, choose to view the characters -- but as you said, that's theatre for you.  I suspend disbelief and think that Sally is a white, English woman, regardless of who's playing her, and that Cli

CABARET at the Kit Kat Club (2024) Opening Night Critics' Reviews

I went to see this last night - both Adam and Auli'i were in, although there were quite a few post-Thanksgiving outs (Bebe among them).   Some thoughts:

Adam as Emcee:  Adam is my fourth emcee -- I've also seen Eddie, Fra, and a cover in London whose name I unfortunately can't recall.  Adam was the most libertine of the emcees in Act One.  I find it fascinating that they've given him more license than other emcees to ad

Best New Musical and Best New Play of the DECADE (So Far?)

Musical:  toss-up between Bad Cinderella and Tammy Faye

Play:  McNeal

...

Oh, you said "best."

Musical:  A Strange Loop, in terms of the sophistication of the work, although it personally was not my cup of tea; have not yet seen Maybe Happy Ending, so that may displace

Revival:  Merrily or Parade

Play:  Leopoldstadt or Fat Ham
