I'm such a sap for musicals that as soon as I hear the overture begin I get all choked up--no matter if I have seen a show a dozen times or not! So....what is your favorite Overture or Entr'Acte music? As I said, I love them all, but my favorite is "Gypsy".

*feels bad because she's never heard Gypsy*

*loves Christmas*

Anyway, I'm really digging the Piazza overture. It gives me chills. I also adore WSS's overture.

Another vote for WSS, and LitP is awesome, too. Although, I admit I haven't heard Gypsy either.

I think "Phantom"'s overture is pretty good. The show on the other hand...

The thing I love so much about the "Gypsy" overture are the BIG FEEL of it!! The horns, in particular, are terrific. Love it!!! If you haven't heard it, go to Amazon.com, go to the revival CD, and scroll down to the sample just to get a feel for it. Just great!

3 - way tie for different reasons...

1.) POTO ... it just makes me cry, it's beautiful
2.) 42nd Street (the revival) ... it's so exciting! Everytime I hear it I fall in love with Broadway again
3.) WSS... if you need a reason, you've never heard it (lol)!

Oh yes!!! 42nd Street is right up there at the top of the list too. I saw the revival about a dozen times, and I have a Pavlovian response now as soon as I hear the first few notes of the overture--makes my heart pound!!!! Again, it's got that big Broadway feel to it. LOVE IT!!!

The WSS opening is really a prologue, not an overture because there's action happening. Small distinction. I do love it.

Merrily, A Little Night Music, Piazza, Candide, Carousel Waltz, The Fantasticks

I love the Ragtime Entr'acte

SWEET CHARITY has one of the best and most thrilling overtures I've ever heard. And it barely gets the credit it deserves.

I am not talking about the cheapo version used for the recent revival. I'm talking about the FULL overture, which hasn't been heard on Broadway since Gwen Verdon graced the stage as Charity in 1966.

Both Promises, Promises and Subways are for Sleeping have nice overtures. I also like the overtures from Pajama Game and Forum.

Two other neat overtures are from Carousel, "The Carousel Waltz", and Guys and Dolls, "Runyonland". Both of these are unique because of the action/dance taking place during both of them.

Have any of you heard Barry Manilow's "Overture of Overtures?" It's like a little guessing game of Broadway overtures put together and among them are "Gypsy," "Candide," "The Carousel Waltz," "Company," "Sweet Charity," and "Evita."
