With very good reason.

You can also add Merrilly We Roll Along and the Prolouge form West Side Story for me.

Yeah,
Candide hands down.

In fact Gypsy is my worst, typical overture.

I loved the overtures for "On the Twentieth Century" and "My One and Only."

I do love all of the usual suspects, like Gypsy, Funny Girl, Candide, Merrily, Superman and On the Twentieth Century, but there are a couple less celebrated Overtures that I also adore.

Goldilocks starts like a house on fire, with a furioso version of "The Pussy Foot" that gets your blood racing. The orchestrations are by composer Leroy Anderson, and the great Phil Lang, and they are quirky and surprising throughout, with a lot of Anderson's trademark sound. It's long, but it's a gem.

Wildcat has a terrific Overture, starting with an attention grabbing brass section fanfare. I particularly love the writing for the saxes for "What Takes My Fancy". It's the work of Gypsy's Sid Ramin and Robert Ginzler, so the Gypsy fans who have never heard the Wildcat Overture might get a kick out of it.

Phil Lang provided the dense, layered and lush Overture for Take Me Along, which is one of my absolute favorites. The joyous title song keeps peeking its way through the Overture, until it finally explodes at the end. It's an immensely satisfying Overture, filled with gorgeous writing.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

Gypsy is of course the best, but Mame is pretty wonderful too. When that Banjo starts....

I'll go with

On the Twentieth Century
Mack and Mabel
and
Take Me Along

I've never understood everyone's fascination with the Gypsy overture.

South Pacific. The richness of the brass section makes it by far my favorite.
