I would also like to point out that most people are saying "Grey Gardens" SHOULD win and "Spring Awakening" WILL win. If most of the tony voters feel "Grey Gardens" should win then "Grey Gardens" will win, I wouldn't rule it out so fast.
Just John, have you not been reading the last couple millions of threads? There's a big difference between what should and what will. It's rare when the right person wins the Tony, or any performance/arts award for that matter. There's a BUNCH of politics involved. While I think that Grey Gardens has a better chance at winning than most peopel give it credit for, I don't think it will. I do think it will either go to Spring Awakening or Mary Poppins.

I am 99.9% set on those predictions above. Even though I don't want them to turn out that way (I would rather see Grey Gardens take most of the awards), I am pretty sure they will. I keep going back and forth on the three categories below, however. Though I list two shows for each, the first one is the one I am leaning towards more at this current time.

High Fidelity winning for Best Scenic Design of a Musical!
Haha, no, I don't think it will happen. Can you imagine it: Tony Award-winning musical High Fidelity!
It's really too bad people think about it in those terms, though. Because the set was amazing. At least it got the nomination.
How about something realistic: Clean sweep for Spring Awakening! Including wins for Jonathan Groff and Scenic Design!!!1! Man, if only Lea Michele and Remy Zaken were nominated, it could have beaten The Producers's record!
I'm just kidding.
But I do predict Spring Awakening to win more than any other musical.

No love for Rebecca Luker? :'( "Being Mrs. Banks" melted my heart! And she played Mrs. Banks flawlessly! I don't want to argue back and forth, I'm just saying what I think.
She was good; she's always good. But it's a totally thankless role.

i have a hunch that since everyone is expecting ebersole to win ---- audra could come in and nab her fifth, in one of those "i expected everyone else to vote her"
just the way the pajama game revival won over sweeney revival.

I'm surprised by the Angela Landsbury predictions here. I think shes one of the best stage actress' of our day, and know that shes never lost a Tony award...but, a Tony for DEUCE? Hell no! What a poorly written role, and AL just doesn't bring anything special to it. I'm pretty confident in that Eve Best was indeed the Best, but I think if anyone tops her it will be Julie White, who was lauded by the broadway community this past year even though her show closed in early winter.
Munk, do you really think the book of CURTAINS will take the top prize? I adore the show, but after I went back and saw it a second time, I certainly wouldnt reward it for Best Book. I know the Drama Desks did, but I just dont see it besting GREY GARDENS book. I think MLW will take the Featured Actress in a Musical Tony, but if anybody from Curtains were to win, it should be Karen Ziemba for yet another winning turn and for still dancing her ass off.
I saw "Deuce" last evening and I agree that while Angela Landsbury is one of the best stage actresses of our time, she should not win for this show. Sorry to say. Maybe there will be some other factors like sentimentality or something but this may be a case of a great actress in a poor role/show.
Munk, I doubt Curtains will win Best Book simply because it wasn't that good.
"I'm surprised by the Angela Landsbury predictions here. I think shes one of the best stage actress' of our day, and know that shes never lost a Tony award...but, a Tony for DEUCE? Hell no!"
Hell, yes! She made the ridiculously bad play memorable, and slightly good. I loved her. I'm all for Tony #5 for Angela.

random, not entirely-related question, but are the TONYs going to be broadcast anywhere over the internet? Any info would be great! Thanks!
sunday- As far as I know, the Tonys are not broadcast on the internet. However, the first half-hour or so with the design awards is broadcast online.
My prediction as to why Angela Lansbury will win has nothing to do with how good she actually is or is not. We all know by now that quality has little to nothing to do with the Tony Awards.
When predicting a winner for any award show, you must take EVERYTHING into consideration - politics, history, performance, etc. You have to learn the politics of a given voting body. The politics behind the Oscars are entirely different from the politics of, say, the Tonys. I think that I'm good at understanding that, which is why I have a great track record when it comes to predicting awards.
I got most of the Oscars and most of the Drama Desks correct (2nd highest on the boards for the former, highest on the boars for the latter). I stand by what I said.
And as far as CURTAINS winning best book, again, it has NOTHING to do with quality. I would vote for GREY GARDENS, but I certainly wouldn't be upset if CURTAINS won.
CURTAINS will win Best Book as the token trophy for the show. It's an important enough award that it will be CURTAINS' consolation prize, just as the 2 winning actresses from GREY GARDENS will be it's consolation prize.
I'm still no confident that David Pittu will win the award, but I am pretty confident that Gallagher will not.
I agree with Munk.
Many people don't like the first act book of GREY GARDENS (I happen to be one of the rare people who enjoys the first act as much as the second), and the second act is taken practically verbatim from the documentary. CURTAINS is not a perfect book, but it's a real crowd-pleaser, and it's completely original.
I have had this gut feeling since Spring Awakening opened, that Gallagher would win.
His performance has actually gotten worse, if you can believe it. He's taking more liberties with the material that works against him. When I saw him in previews, he was giving a deeply layered, beautiful performance.
Now, it's a 3-ring circus. He plays everything for laughs now, even when it's not funny. He takes horrific vocal liberties with the songs, and sings things now so that the lyrics are utterly undiscernable. His voice is also on the outs. He's a great talent, but I wonder if he didn't fool around too much to be taken seriously.
Rath: Agreed. I know CURTAINS isn't perfect and that it probably has problems galore, but I loved every second of the show. An absolute GREAT night at the theatre, and I hope it's there for a great, long while.
I really have a feeling that Ebersole and McDonald are going to tie.
