I love Plimpton, but Haydn will win for Billy Elliot. There is no doubt in my mind.

[Featured Actress in a Play] Should have been nominated: Casey Mulligan, The Seagull

I agree, Ben, but her name is CAREY Mulligan, not Casey.

I like that they both think N2N will win score.

Nothing against BE and I'm sure it deserves Best Musical, but it isn't that good of a score.

I think its crazy to suggest that Tveit should be a best actor nominee and it is EQUALLY crazy that he is not a best featured actor nominee - a category I believe he should have won for this performance (not for his appearance in boxer shorts). When Alice wins (which everyone understands) it is the connection she creates with Tveit that makes the entire journey believable and worthwhile. He is as intense in the role as his nominated sister, nominated father and nominated mother - the performances are equally compelling and his having been left out is a flat-out mistake. I have seen him in other work and he has not impressed me. This performance in N2N is career defining and he deserved recognition. Of course, leave it to Brantley to go too far in his recognition. At least he got Olivo right. She deserves the featured award for the ladies IMHO.

3. I agree that Tveit's performance was not nomination-worthy. Just because he has a hot body and can sing really well doesn't mean his performance is Tony-worthy.

I'm not sure if he would or should win over some of the others in the category (Sieber for one), but I do think his 8-times-a-week emotional performance at least deserved a nomination over a role that entails singing one song four times a week. How is dancing with creepy giant dresses not even in every performance of the show Tony-worthy?

OK for the record, I did not enjoy Billy Elliot that much. I really didn't. That being said, I am getting a little sick of people stomping over David Bologna's performance which in my opinion was the best part about the show other than Trent (whom I saw as Billy). Do I think Frank Dolce should have been nominated too? Absolutely. That was a major eff-up by the producers of Billy Elliot. But honestly I remember seeing the show in November and saying to myself "That kid is going to get a Tony nom". I think he was really great. Honestly, I don't think Greg Jbara deserves an award or nomination for his performance. I would have liked to have seen Aaron nominated in Greg's, Will's, or Marc's spot. But people need to stop complaining about the kid getting a nomination. The bottom line is that he was very good, he's not going to win, but neither was Aaron. End of story.

Thank you, bjh. David Bologna is wonderful in Billy Elliot, and apparently Charles Isherwood thinks so too. I think his nomination is kind of like Robin de Jesus's from last year. They're not in much of the show, but what they do, they do incredibly well.

It's Tony-worthy because he dances with giant dresses 4 times a week better than Aaron Tveit angsts in his boxer shorts full time.

Judi Dench was in about six minutes of Shakespeare in Love, was spectacular, and won an Oscar.
Anthony Quinn was in Viva Zapata! for about the same amount of time, and also won an Oscar.

While I don't think David deserves the Tony, and I'm not sure whether he deserved a nomination, but making the "he does nothing in the show" case is silly, especially when it's only to advance your case for why a nice voice in boxer shorts deserves a Tony while you have his show in your avatar.

Aaron Tveit did deserve a nomination. I agree. I think that his performance, like someone else noted, is the glue of the show. He vacillates between kindness and anger, calm and malevolent, and gentle and disturbing. I thought he was more powerful and had more of a presence than the stereotypical angst of the Jen Damiano role. He is heartbreaking.

Also, I think Martha has a real chance. She is the reason many people saw Pal Joey. She deserves the Tony far more than Olivo and her pared down dance numbers. I hope Martha is an upset. She was inspired in her first musical. Martha has a ton of respect in the industry. Hopefully she gets it.

Two snotty queens and their well-paid [?] opinions. Yawn.

Isherwood should go back to writing bios of gay porn stars.

I was suprised to see Olivo as a "will win", as well. I thought Hadyn had this in the bag. And I still do.

I'm still thinking Olivo has it... or atleast I sure hope she does.

Gwynne was great, but most of her jokes fell flat- especially any of her line during "Shine." That scene and many were completely stolen by the hilarious ballerinas. Shelley was, however, stellar in her VERY featured role. Jbara was serviceable, but Bologna was BRILLIANT. He commanded that stage like no child I have ever scene and stole the show (that is- until Billy's "Angry Dance.")

Interesting that the only mention of 9 to 5 was in the "Should have been nominated" for Kathy Fitzgerald by Brantley. I'm also surprised that both believe Marcia Gay Harden has it in the bag. For some reason, I was thinking it would be McTeer's to lose.

Yes, that is very odd to me. I'm surprised they didn't put either of the 9 TO 5 women on their "should have been nominated" list except for Fitzgerald.

Haydn Gwynne has the momentum, the show, and "The Letter" on her side. It's definitely hers to lose.

Haydn has very little to work with in the second act. And the second act is Olivo's best. It might not mean anything, but just putting that out there.

It's just nice to know they both agree Karen deserves the award.

I still think despite Billy Elliot's sweep last night, it won't win everything come Tony night, including Score, Featured Actress and several design awards. I could eat my words, but I'm sticking to my gut. The Drama Desks have sort have become a joke the last few years anyway, and after that pianist or whatever the hell he was last night, they are in my mind.

Actually, I wasn't so sure about a sweep until last night. Judging by the nominations, 9 to 5 should have won more than just Outstanding Actress... Dolly could have won, it could have won orchestrations, it could have won set design or costume design... Hair could have won lighting design or sound design or director... Sieber and Olivo could have won... The love is definitely for Billy Elliot this season. I think it's possible that this will translate at the Tonys. Also, set design and the Billys seem like sure things, meaning Billy Elliot could very well tie The Producers at the Tony Awards.

Dear Sock Puppet,

The only reason Josephina was nominated was to intentionally snub the 9 TO 5 gals. The same reason Stockard Channing was nominated.

Don't expect your generic Maria to walk away with any statues come Tony night.
