Why do you have to say that? Are you referring to Best Musical? If you are, Girl From the North Country is the most likely frontrunner, as is Adrienne Warren for Best Actress. Early predictions, but entirely reasonable ones.

''At this point, I think it's fair to say that most people who hated the movie like the show much more, and many who loved the film like the show less, with the lackluster ending being a major bone of contention.''

''At this point,'' I don't think that's fair to say AT ALL. Geez, ''Moulin Rouge'' hasn't even been officially open for a week. ''Most people''? Your sampling size is infinitesimal. Based on what? People who posted on this message board? Reactions have run the gamut. Generalizations are silly and dubious, even ''at this point.''

Here's one thing that quantifiable: According to the latest grosses, ''Moulin Rouge'' did $1.7 million, based on 7 performances. It's doing 105% of its gross potential; its average ticket price is $188. Will it keep this up? Time will tell, but it seems to be off to a good start.

Yes, my comment was referring to the reactions of people on this board and people I know personally, for both the Boston run and Broadway. Obviously, I'm not talking about EVERYONE, but I wouldn't have said what I did if I hadn't noticed a common thread throughout what I've heard and read so far. I still think it's a fair statement, since, generally speaking, I find the reviews on this board to be a pretty accurate representation of the general public.

I've mentioned this before but part of what the movie Moulin Rouge so effective was Nicole Kidman's ability to seem incredibly far off/there-but-not-there. It gave Satine a mysterious, ethereal quality. I really can't think of many musical theater stars who are able to pull that sort of thing off.

For me, that is Elena Roger, but she was certainly not embraced by New York.

i saw her in Evita and the problem I, and I’m guessing others, had with her had nothing to with her acting. Her dancing was also very good  it was her pitchy singing on high notes. The strangers on either side of me both agreed at intermission that those high notes were killing us and not in a good way  Fortunately, in Act 2 as Eva’s health begins to fail, she didn’t have as much opportunity for pitchy high notes. It was my only negative in a production that I otherwise really enjoyed

So excited to see it on Thursday! What time does the show end after 2:00 matinees? I'm getting my bus ride.

You should be out on the street by 5PM at the very latest (it runs about 2 hours and 45 minutes). Enjoy!

Looking to get $99 seats. To those who have seen it would it be better from the back of the mezzanine in the centre or row J orchestra but on the left seats 17 and 19 (4 and 5 from the side)

Seeing the show this weekend. Just confirming this is the thread for reviews. It's titled "professional" reviews, but I don't see an alternate thread for reg'lar folk. Thanks.

Usually people just keep the preview thread going, but its fine if you post your thoughts here, too.

People.com has an exclusive story about Nicole Kidman's visit last night (Aug. 9) to ''Moulin Rouge!'' After the show, she and hubby Keith Urban went backstage and raved about the show and took photos with the cast. Kidman singled out Karen Olivo for praise, giving her a big hug and said she was ''blown away.''

My daughter and I loved the show. It pulls out all the stops. The sets were majestic, the costumes were sumptuous and it was a visual feast for the eyes and ears.

Singing and dancing were first rate. Actors Danny Burstein, Ricky Rojas and Sahr Ngaujah were terrific. I predict a Tony nod for Burstein. Tam Mutu was a rather handsome Count, who differed from the movie by wanting to upgrade Santine's station in life. We didn't see him as a horrible villain. Olivo and Tveit were fine but the chemistry could have been stronger. As I watched, my mind wondered how Gavin Creel, who looks like Aaron's brother, might have performed the role.

My daughter, a fanatic of the film, wished some of the songs were done the same way in the show.

But we're just quibbling here. My advice is go to this show. It's a fun, very special night of theater.

So disappointed I missed Nicole by a day.

Moulin Rouge was "spectacular, spectacular" and everything I was hoping for it to be. Aaron was the perfect and cutest Christian. Karen's Santine is so much more outgoing than Nicole, so it took a while to get used to it. Karen's voice is incredible. Legit the best voice I've heard on Broadway. Her Diamond Medley blew me away. But, Danny Burstein and Sahr Ngaujah were my favorite parts of the show. Danny is so stunning as Ziegler and will hopefully finally get his Tony next year. Sahr was so warm and comforting as Toulouse. His scenes with Tam and Aaron were great. I can easily picture him getting nominated.

Roxanne and Bad Romance were just as incredible as they were hyped to be and I had the biggest smile during the former. Aaron nailed it. Also, an additional scene has a great reference to the movie. So surprised they crammed that one movie part in how minor it was. Those who have seen it know what I mean.

So sorry about early Tony predictions, but I can easily picture Moulin Rouge sweep all of the creative design Tony nominations, along with Best Cherography and possibly Best Featured Actor for Danny or Sahr.

I’m still about two weeks from my third trip to NYC and I’m slowly getting VERY excited about this. I’ll also need to start listening to the Hadestown OBCR again since I’m seeing it too. It’s a shame that the Moulin Rouge! cast recording won’t come out until after I’ve seen the show. Ah, but it’ll make for good memories! Not sure how many souvenirs I’ll buy but I’m not digging the window card at all. Do love the coffee mug and shot glasses though. :)

FYI: I listened to the full OBCR on the day it was released and loved it, but I was advised that I should hold off on listening to it again until after I actually see it (C’mon September 27th!) so as to not rob myself of the sense of discovery including being knowledgeable of certain plot points. I’ve done that before and I’ve learned my lesson. I know everyone is different though. Just my two cents.

Yes, I’m aware. I was replying to dmwnc1959 (post #93) who referenced the Hadestown OBCR. I could’ve been clearer. Sorry for the confusion.
