If this is true, I have lost all respect for the Smiths.
HELL. TO. THE. NO.
Seriously, you can mess with The Karate Kid, but if you mess with something as remarkable, nay wonderful, as Annie...I just hope this idea gets flushed. And the sooner the better.
I'll only watch it if she has a red clown wig and sings "Whip My Hair."

Why are we bashing this so quickly? For all we know, she could be an amazing singer and actress.

My initial response to this was a roll of the eyes at Will Smith's ever-reaching efforts to keep himself and his family in the public eye.
But then, this is really one of the best ways to survive in the industry today. Sure, it looks a little less pathetic when you can't see the star doing all the work, but let's face it- the majority of celebrities create their own buzz. They (or their publicists) call the paps to let them know where they're lunching, they're constantly making connections to get new jobs...heck, even many of our favorite broadway actors are out there auditioning over and over. Really, Smith is just keeping himself and his family relevant in order to stay at the top of the business. He's just loud about it.
As long as they don't bastardize the story, I'm cool with it. Or, maybe they'll do something kind of new and make it interesting...I mean, who knew West Side Story would be a lovable take on Romeo and Juliet? (Not to say that Annie is comparable to Shakespeare, but maybe we're reaching a point where the modern classics can be readdressed?)
Willow actually sounds like she could be pretty talented, if she would use her voice to sing legitimately. So we'll see...

Maybe he'll take it back to the comic and give us pirates and The Asp! And no, Punjab does not count as The Asp. I don't know who The Asp was, but "A Christmas Story" has convinced me he is the world's best friend to have.

Wasn't Annie just remade? I am not sure that the world really need more Annie.

I was thinking it would work better in the "Little Girls" spot, myself!

we already have two wonderful Film adaptions that both did justice to the piece both adaptions with star studded cast although there were higher points in the remakes there is no need for a third one perhaps the smiths should attach themselves to the upcoming revival.
What did they used to call this sort of thing in the movies in the 1970's? Black-ploitation?
Of course on the bright side we now have the technology to digitally remove her pupils.
wonderwaiter - That is probably the funniest thing I have ever read on the boards here. Thank you! :)
Willow Smith would actually be a great Annie. The kid's got moxie, charisma, street smarts and can actually sing.

Everybody assumes it is the musical being remade, even the article. Could it in turn just be a re-adapatation of the comic book?
I am so sick of the Smiths' smug, spoiled kids.
