I have to agree with the comment about how this site keeps people who aren't in New York connected--I've never even been to New York. But I am thrilled to be able to visit and find out about shows as soon as they open, and talk with people who are as passionate about theatre--or more so--as I am.
Web theory posits that there are two types of web interactors: Mavens, who create content or provide vital information, and connectors, who provide the framework and connections around the mavens. A connector can wield as much power as a maven if the support system is good, insightful, entertaining or otherwise enjoyable.

I think "poisonous atmosphere" is a bit of an exaggeration, but a good example of this would be when I was fairly new and posted about being excited about being able to get tickets for the opening not of HAIR. A few posters ridiculed my enthusiasm. I don't know why some feel the need to do stuff like that...I guess it makes them feel empowered or superior.

These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
