All of the musicals for the 2013-2014 season have now at least began previews, and most have opened. So with at least word of mouth thoughts available on all performances, what are your thoughts on the musical related Tony categories? Who will get nominated, who do you think will be the favorites, any sleepers, etc.? I'm also curious about discussions beyond Best Musical and Best Leading Actress, because there have been a few threads already established about these topics.
The threads I mostly noticed were on specific categories within the musical awards, whereas my intent was to have thoughts related to all the categories.
That being said, if people feel that this thread is unnecessary or redundant, I have no problem with it either being deleted or have it just go down to the bottom of the board. Up to if people feel this thread serves a purpose or not.

Dear Jeffrey: If you truly believe that Beautiful, Aladdin and Rocky are more likely to garner a Tony nomination than Bullets Over a Broadway, I'd be very interested in placing a nice bet on that proposition. I might even give you odds. PM me if you're interested (or when you arrive back on planet earth.) All in good fun, not personal. :)

I'm just going to hold off on Bullets for now at least until the show opens and the reviews are in.
Well, Jeffrey, you had me fooled since you did include folks from Bullets in your list of likely nominees before there have been any reviews. So, my bet offer still stands. :)

The reason for the nominations for Bullets so far is actually based off the reviews from the Previews Thread, the critics will be the ones that might just change my mind.
Bullets, Aladdin After Midnight, Gentleman's Guide. I am not sure why people are not putting After Midnight in the lists its one the best reviewed on this board and by critics shows.
Looking at the list of shows that opened this season, I'm curious as to how the Tony committee would recognize these shows. I'm not saying that they deserve to be nominated or win anything, but would they be eligible for any awards, and if so, which ones? I'm really just curious how the Tony committee would treat them.
If the past is any indication? In the past shows such as Rain, The Rascals, Barry Manilow at the Broadway Theatre and others have typically not been nominated for anything. I will pretty safely assume that none of these shows will get nominations based on said past history.
It varies from show to show, usually based on how long the show runs and whether or not they invited Tony voters (i.e. gave tickets to Tony voters). I believe in this case, none of these shows invited Tony voters (although I'm not sure about "Let It Be"), so likely none of them will be eligible.
I agree that none of those will be nominated, but I was just curious about the eligibility. I suppose if the Best Special Theatrical Event category still existed, then maybe they could sneak in there.
"The Tony Awards administration committee quietly voted last month to allow the number of nominees in the Best Musical, Best Play, Best Musical Revival and Best Play Revival categories to five rather than the traditional four nominees if there are nine or more eligible shows to choose between. On the flip side, if less than nine possible shows exist in a category, the number of nominees could be reduced to three."
With just Violet, Hedwig, Les Mis and Caberat in the revival catergory (if Caberat IS eligible), does that mean only three will be nominated? If Caberat is eligible, my guess it that Caberat or Les Mis will be shut out of the category.
Oh so it's not so cut and dry. For a 5th show to be added the margin between the show in 4th place and the show in 5th place has to be 3 or less votes.

I took out Sound Design, since I know no knowledge about it. And I did copy and paste some people's guesses since they matched up to mine

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

"The Bridges of Madison County isn’t a hit (and Broadway loves hits), but the critics liked Kelli O’Hara’s performance and Jason Robert Brown’s score. The most theatrical, pulse-racing 20 minutes of the season are at the climax of Rocky, when the Winter Garden is transformed into a boxing ring. Unfortunately, you’ve spent nearly the last two hours waiting to hear “Eye of the Tiger.”
Dark horse: “Madison County.” Down-for-the-count: “Rocky.”
So, I guess Rocky and Madison County are out of the race.
Well possibly but Dark Horse suggests he thinks it isn't impossible.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Bridges got better reviews than a lot of other shows. It's got an original score (which is occasionally looked upon more favorably). I would only be slightly surprised if it gets in there.
