hum...back to the question at hand here...:)...BABS should direct GYPSY and after listening to a track from her new album "DUETS"...SHE SOUNDS AMAZING AGAIN...but I agree she is too old to star in any movie redo...I do love the idea of a filmed concert performance for AIDS or any other cause though...to hear her sing that score...SONDHEIM himself would be happy I think...
"Streisand also spoke about her desire to direct and star in the film. "Stephen Sondheim would prefer that I just concentrated on [starring in] Gypsy," she said. "But if it ever gets made, I see it, I see every frame of it. And I kind of write my notes, and I think it's possibly gonna happen."
Indeed, Streisand confirms Sondheim does not want her to direct. And also, I can see why no director has gone near this project. Who on earth would agree to direct Barbra in a movie where she'd rather be directing.
So, basically the options are: 1) Sondheim gives in and lets her. And it suffers IMHO. 2) They find someone green enough to do it for the opportunity, and they get walked all over by Barbra. 3) It doesn't happen.
And someone just earned a spot on my block list. As Denis Leary would put it, "Life sucks. Get a helmet.' You don't like it. it's still happening. Get. Over. It.
I imagine Sondheim wants to wait and see how the Into The Woods movie is received. He's never been picky about who has handled his work before (see A Little Night Music movie) and Streisand has directed a movie musical in the past. I think it's an awful idea but that's never stopped Hollywood before.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
It might be a better idea if she just directs it. If she HAS to appear in it, she should play Tessie Tura.
I can't think of who could play Rose. Streep is too old. Catherine Zeta Jones' is not box office enough, ditto for Toni Collette. I'd love to hear Sara Ramirez sing the score, but she hasn't got the box office appeal either.
Barbara Streisand should play that lady in Mr. Grantziger's office how says "Thank you very much, that's all". But other than that she would stay FAR away from Gypsy in my never to be humble opinion.
She sounds 20 years younger than she looks. The problem is that Rose can be a rough and tumble vocalist with verve, but needs to look like the mother of young children.
From the 10th row of a Broadway house with pink gels, maybe. But from the 3rd row of a movie theater with a 50 foot screen,no. And don't even think about IMAX.
