Hello! I am meeting up with family in New York and am hoping to tour for a bit then see a show in the evening. Is there anywhere near Times Square/Penn Station that holds small suitcases (carry-on size)/backpacks where we could pick them up after an evening show? Any good companies to recommend?
Your mileage will vary, but you could try leaving it at a hotel. There are some hotels where you go through the front desk clerk to store baggage, so I would look for one that has actual bellmen that you can walk straight up to and they don't know if you're checking in/out or not. (Not that they'll arrest you or anything if they find out you're not staying there, I just do my very best to avoid any awkwardness.)
Recently I did this at the RIU Plaza Times Square at 46th and 8th, so I know for sure that they don't ask for a room number or anything. Just be sure to tip well!
EDIT: I originally missed the part about coming back after an evening show. I've never done this where I pick up the bags late at night, as a guest or otherwise, so it might be weird. Maybe do go with a professional service for this one - I stand by this method for daytime use, though.
Hotel thing has worked many times for me. But if it doesn't, or if you just want a sure thing, there's a new-ish service called Luggage Hero where you pay a buck or two per hour to store a bag in a variety of stores near both Times Square and Penn Station. https://luggagehero.com/

I've used this before. No complaints at all.

I miss those old school lockers. However, I have recently heard that there are many luggage storage locations all over city and tried this service called vertoe. it was all done online, got the address via text and it seems like a store they partnered with and the person at the desk was friendly too. let me paste the link I used to book http://vertoe.com/luggage-storage/new-york-city
The Yotel at 42nd and 10th has that automated luggage storage robot thing in its lobby. I've walked past it many times on my way up to the bar on the 4th floor, but don't know if it's restricted solely to guest use. It might be worth checking out.
I recently stayed at the Hotel Edison, on 47th Street, and checked bags without being asked whether I was staying there. It was a dollar per bag (plus a tip).

Oh yeah, the summer intern at Verto is earning his/her pay today!
