Help please! I am an ignorant Scotsman who still doesn't know what all the abreviations used on this site mean. Could someone provide a glossary? It really should be a basic requirement of the site to make relative newcomers feel welcome. Confusing terms include:
lol - I would expect this to mean "lots of love" but this doesn't work in some contexts
img - no idea!
omg - Oh my God (I assume)
Please would someone "in the know" please help me out?
Many thanks!

While each may have its varying degree of usefulness, I've always thought "LOL" was pretty stupid. Perhaps it's because most of the time people put it after things that I just don't think are actually funny (and can't imagine they do, either).
I think it has lost its meaning by horrible misuse.
(I know some posters who would put a "lol" after that comment.)
Ah,but you have to put LOL around everything , otherwise people take you seriously and denounce you as satan...
Whoah, wait a second...
...Is this a trick, you're not satan are you?
Oh, of course I'm not.
I simply have control of all the elements of evil in our nature.
People think I'm evil anyway, but the is more effective than the lol as an anger defuser.

But even so, I wonder why it's "laugh out loud." Often I just LSTM.
Sure,I suppose this is more effective, that is if you're attempting to solicit sex...
Funny I never thought of "winking smiley" as sexual. Just goes to show how little we can assume on a message board, maybe lol does not even mean "laugh out loud" at all.
LOL has come to be used in place of JK in a lot of instances. The one that has always irritated me is ROFL, as if anyone, EVER, was amused enough by something said in a chat room or on a message board to fall to the floor and roll around with glee. I mean, come on!
hahaha i agree! for the longest time I never knew what ROFL stood for, but I knew it was like an lol.. one i dont know--what does ETA mean, i've seen it used before and felt stupid asking
ETA- Edited to add, that one makes sense.
I am guilty of using "lol" entirely too much. It's just easier than trying to use "chuckling quietly to myself because I think I am darn funny."

when I say "lol" I usually mean "I'm fake-giggling because I really don't know what to say, but I feel a need to say something" OR "what I said was funny..so laugh, damnit"
Sometimes I actually do lol when I claim to lol...sometimes I fake it...a girl has to reserve herself.

For the longest time, I thought ETA meant estimated time of arrival. You can imagine my confusion.
Lizzie, I can honestly say that your post did indeed make me lol
i alwasy thought ETA meant estimated time arrival too.. so i was always confused.
It actually is "estimate time of arrival". At least, in real life.
For example, at hospital, when they ask for the ETA of an ambulance, they get a number of minutes.
