I was wondering if you any of you remember the weirdest and funniest sentences that you saw in Spelling Bee.
I, for one, enjoy the capybara one...
But I'd like to hear others.

well my favorite is...

And I keep thinking how if you took the W in Answer, the H in Ghost, the second A in Aardvark and the T in Listen you could keep saying "what" over and over again but no one would hear you because the whole word would be silent....

The show I went to the word was COW for a little girl, and she asked for a sentence, and the guy was like, "please spell cow", and then there was another one that I can't quite remember but it was some jewish term and the sentence was "Please put those down, Jimmy, we're Apiscopalean (oh god, the spelling)"

i think that word was moyle (sp?ha!) which i think are the small boxes containing sacred texts that are worn

I doubt that, since a Moyl (spelling?) is one who performs a briss, or circumcision.

Funny though. The COW thing made me laugh until I cried a bit. Cliche. Touche.

The word was phylactery for the small leather boxes worn that contain small texts from the Torah. And they used that on the Tonys. The sentence was, "Billy, put down that phylactery, we're Episcopalian."

And it's spelled mohel.

A Mohel (pronounced moil) is one who performs the circumcision. I know it's on the recording for the First Goodbye, but I can't remember if it's actually in the show (liotte?)

The word you are thinking of is phylactery, which is an artifact used in Jewish prayer.

ETA - almostx, you beat me to it!

Yes, thank you for the word. I should probably know that since I'm Jewish, but I always called them tefillen, the Hebrew name. To finish the story, the girl went on to misspell "cow", and the cast didn't know what to do. There was a thead on this a while back, but it was pretty freakin hilarious.

My fave was when someone was given the word "bijintillion" (lol, ironically I effed up that spelling, just wrote it semi-phonetically). It means 20 billion I believe and the sentece was:

"Billy, if I've told you once, I've told you bijintillion times: those magazines are daddy's!"

lol. Love em'. And I love that they're all directed to "Billy" haha.

There was one regarding 'Jihad' that made me laugh a lot too. and of course capybara is my alltime fave.

If I show you the darkness I hold inside, will you bring me to light?

Panche- Your word is "strabismus."
Logainne- Can you use the word in a sentence, please?
Panche- "In the schoolyard, Billy protested he wasn't cockeyed. 'I suffer from strabismus,' he said, whereupon the bullies beat him harder."

we got a new one tonight (or at least one I hadn't heard before), I think it was indigent, and the sentence was "Indigent people are just lazy." which cracked me up for some reason.

I know we're talking sentences, but I *love* that the definition of Mexicans is "many a Mexican."

"Jihad"
Can I have a defintion.
"A holy war."
Can you use it in a sentence?
"Billy, duck behind that Western Wall, I think I see Jihad coming"

Now that the principal is gone, anybody seen it to see if he's still writing new sentences??

When I saw it the second time, they needed to get rid of the last contestant, but he got the word right whatever it was. So they all start laughing, and Jay and Lisa just stared at eachother cracking up, and the audience was hilarious. So Jay leans over and gives some ridiculous word that doesn't exist and they guy was like "can I have that in a sentance please?" and Jay just says "no". So the guy starts to spell it and one letter in Jay rang the bell. It was awesome.

The other night when I saw it the last man in got an impossible word right too, so they called him right back up to the mic. As soon as Greg Stuhr read the word, the comfort counselor got up with the apple juice and just crossed his arms right next to the man. He asked for the definition, and Stuhr said "There IS no definition for that word." He then asked for a sentenced, and Stuhr said "Please spell ___." He started by saying something like zar-, and stuhr cut him off and asked him to say that again. He said za-, and stuhr said "It's an X." It was so funny.

I think I know all the sentences and words used in the show, but why post them all?? They are some of the best parts of the show and it ruins it for so many people who should see it live.

I'll just add about spelling impossible words...when I saw it they gave a guy a word with no definition and he spelled it RIGHT, so they call him right back up and give him an even harder word and he misses it by one letter. He was the best looking dude they'd had all day.

Guys--Nobody loves spelling bee more than I do--but I have to agree with Liotte on this one.
I read a recent post where someone commented that the umph was taken out of the show for him because he had read about all of the words and sentences ahead of time.
I think that's the last thing we want to do.
We probably should share our enthusiasm for this show by commenting about things that don't spoil the experience for others.

Perhaps then--you should invite posters to email you privately rather than risk ruining it for people who have not seen Spelling Bee yet
