I saw Topol do this at the Gershwin several years ago. If it hadn't been for Marcia Lewis, I would have totally hated it. It was a very boring production. Topol was dull.
In 2007 he did an Australia/New Zealand tour which was pretty average. There was talk of that production going to Asia. When you do the show with him part of the deal is that you use some of his scenery which he owns - it isn't good. He is 75 now.
If you go "that site" and search for "Fiddler- Australia 2007 I Just Wanna Dance" there is an interesting montage that the cast put together.
I don't know how it could be touring since they are still handing out the rights to it for regional theatres...

I saw Topol do the pre-Broadway-revival tour in the late '80s, out here in L.A.
He "walked" through it up until "To Life!" Then suddenly he came alive in that scene and stayed alive for the rest of the show.
(I always wondered if he had REAL booze served to him in that tavern.)
But early on, his "Tradition" and "If I Were a Rich Man" were completely phoned-in and dull.
The other great reasons to see the show (back then) were the fantastic, original sets and costume designs. The Chagall/Van Gogh-like backdrops were very effective. I can still remember the colors and the impact that had. It was very impressionistic, and so "theatrically" different from the realistic settings in the film.

Our community theatre in Naples, Florida planned to do Fiddler this coming February, but when applying for rights last year they turned us down due to a "pending tour". We are currently trying again for Sept./Oct. of 2009. I have yet to see any schedule for the tour -- it's not on Troika's site -- and none of the tour houses in SW Florida have it on their schedule.
There is a casting call for the tour coming up soon.

I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...

This tour is part of next year's Dallas Summer Musicals line-up. Most of my friends are surprised he's still performing... I'm looking forward to seeing him though. I saw the tour with Thedore Bikel several years ago. I also saw a local production put on by a Southern Baptist church, but that's a story for another day....
