Whoa, do I feel dumb now
For what it's worth, I back you up 100% now
You know -- I had my concerns about Santos, but when he said he "I am doing what I should have done when Sunset Blvd won the Tony" I knew he was for real. He started hanging around to be a male role model and get Justin hooked on football but he gradually gained the total acceptance of him and Hilda and it was beautifully done. There is something very authentic about him....
I am increasingly troubled with how they are portraying Alexis' sexual identity -- there has been absolutely no reference made to the fact that Alex has ever been or wanted to be with a man before the operation when in fact most transgendered people rarely change their sexual preference after the surgery. And if she always viewed herself as a heterosexual female than she would have at least pursued some male relationships before the surgery,
or at least not without a real struggle over sexual identity.
Great article in USA Today about Michael Urie (Marc).

"Great article in USA Today about Michael Urie (Marc)."
Second to last paragraph:
"And after he concludes his run in Hamlet, he can hardly wait to fly to New York to catch a production of Gypsy, starring Patti LuPone, a gay icon who recently appeared on Betty as Marc's cold, homophobic mother."
Forget Patti's Broadway star turns, forget the movies she's made, starring in a tv series, she is only known as "gay icon".
Gotham, I'm not sure if that's the viewpoint of the person who wrote the article, or Michael's actual statement.
New episode tonight!
Can't wait.
Betty and Henry: FINALLY together!? God, I hope so.
one of the weirdest Ugly Betty episodes. but once again- a good one.
Something cute written in the LA Times - about Hairspray/UB related.
I think the movie that has the best chance to surprise is "Hairspray." New Line needs to sell it as a cousin of "Grease," not a Travolta drag show and it seems they get that. Think "Ugly Betty: The Musical" with an infectious, nostalgic score.
cute.
im tellin ya. UB the musical better come next season.
Did Daniel pop that pill because of Betty? Was he turned on by her? Or did I just imagine that?

No, it was because a "hot model" chick was leaning over Betty from behind and chatting with her. That's when Daniel took the pill.
IMHO--weird turn, even for this show, to have Daniel getting hooked on pills. Also, it's been done before. Which I guess is why it's weird...

So I guess that was speed? To be fair Ugly Betty's plots are nearly all ones soaps (and more to the poitn telenovelas) have done before--it's HOW they do them
I dunno I still enjoy the show--and it was never one of my top shows to be honest but the last 2 or so episodes have felt a bit off balance to me. A bit too... cartoony? or something? We always had that campy/cartoony as a big element but something about the pacing of last week's and even more this week--I hope this isn't a growing trend...
I knew from the promos that last night's episode was going to be strange, but next week's episode looks even stranger.
I think the pills are just a placebo.

Brilliant supposition, mom, and I hope you're right. I was thinking, "What self-respecting therapist would give out an 'experimental drug' like they were M&M's??" The placebo idea makes complete sense.
I agree that last night's episode had more of a cartoon-y tone than usual. I mean, when the jerky guy threw a large, hard object right at Betty's head, and basically noone reacted, except for his friends giving him high 5's? That was a bit much.
We'll see how it all pans out, I guess.

"A bit too... cartoony? or something?"
To me, it was that the scenes shifted too quickly. From Betty, to Hilda, to Daniel, to Claire, to Alexis...it was all too fast.
One of things that I noticed in the writing, and I hope they don't continue it, is that either Betty or Christina made a nasty remark about Charlie. So far, Charlie hasn't done anything for us to hate her, and I think it makes the other characters look bad when they take pot shots at her.

Yes - but you have to admit, she got medieval on his ass!
I liked this episode...I also think those are just placebo, but it will end up working on him.
This show is such a pleasure to watch!
what is placebo?
I just don't get why they decided to make the hot male secretary someone who wasn't likeable. He was fine in the episode last week, and wham, this week he's nasty.
I will admit when Daniel gave Betty the money for the plane tickets, it brought tears to my eyes.

A placebo is a sugar pill. It's given to a patient but they're told it's something else. Sometimes the mind over matter thing works. If you think you're taking something that is making you better, sometimes you will GET better. It's something to placate the patient who doesn't really need anything. (does that make sense?)
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...
Thanks for posting that CJR, you beat me to it!
yep- it makes sense.
thanks!
I can't wait for Betty 1st season DVD. I hope all the eps are extended/uncut and in widescreen.

I dunno--when he took the pill the camera sped and got all jittery--and Daniel LOOKED wired--to me Betty is the kinda show that would get him hooked on Speed before it would on placebos...

I got teary there too and moments liek that saved the episode for me. But exactly--not just the hot male secretary--EVERYONE was much more cartoony in their reactions--Charlie too. I hope maybe the show runners (who is headwriter? De Silva?) were too busy crafting a perfect finale and didn't have time to oversee this episode as much as they liked... Even the scenes back at the Suarez's which are usually much calmer and down to earth were much quicker and abrasive
E
but 'Betty can get away with this style of episode.
I mean it has that telenovela style.
The original cut could have run long- so perhaps they had to compromise some pacing or scenes.
