Hey everyone. Thanks for the critiques and comments. (*patiently awaiting Tiff's*)
Oh, and Light in the Piazza was beautiful tonight.
Wow, okay, I missed a bit here! Playing catch up...
- Critiques are coming up shortly. I've got classes (!!) all this weekend until the evening (meaning I'll miss the first hour of the Oscars! *tear*), so tonight was my last night of fun until next week!
I've started writing them though. I'll try to get them posted tonight.
Song Suggestions
- Spidey...let me see what OLP karaoke exists. Have you considered Michael Buble? ((He does this nifty arrangement of "Feeling Good" that I would love to hear you try, and it's sexy and jazzy and pretty upbeat, so it's a departure from what you've done so far.) And you've already got your Brit song chosen.
- Kerrie, I'd love it if you tried "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan. Can someone find some U2 karaoke? I expect to hear "One" covered by Kerrie. But it's not on LimeWire.
- Kitz, "Uninvited" or something from JLP? Pretty please? And do "On My Own" if you MUST, but you'd better rock it!
- Ebby, "Life Is A Highway", maybe? Still thinking about a British artist for you to do.
- jrb_actor, you've got your Canadian song choice already. As for a Brit song, please do some Elton (old school would be the best!). Either "Tiny Dancer" (because many of us, including myself, are 'Almost Famous' freaks!), "Your Song", or "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" or...or...*creams* I don't really care - but if you do Elton, I'll be a very happy gal.
Oh, and I'm not a big Coldplay or Keane fan. I dunno if the other judges are. But I'm not.
Also, since you guys are being given two songs, I figured I'd ask you if you want to have a 10-day break (meaning we'd have the show/results around March 12) or if you just want to keep things on schedule for next weekend. Keep in mind that this is the only two song week, and from the next round until the conclusion, it gets upped to 3 songs/round, and I figure you guys will need the extended time more at that point.

Overall Comments
This wasn’t my favourite week…I dare say that it turned out to be one of my least favourite weeks, simply because this late in the competition, no one should be at a mediocre level, when we’ve seen clips from everyone here that’s been ‘above-mediocre’ to ‘excellent’, so you’re being looked at with a tougher criteria than you were in, say, round 2. Now everyone’s got to one-up their last fantastic performance, and anything that doesn’t meet up to the bar you have each set just seems like a disappointment. There aren’t any patterns I’ve noticed for all of this week’s clips except for that. Some people need to choose songs that are more challenging and diverse, and different than what we’ve already seen. Others need to express their song emotionally, instead of just hitting the notes. Sorry this is in point form – I don’t mean to end each review on a critical note, but that’s how the format for Pros/Cons work! LOL! I’m looking forward to next week!
1) Kitzarina 7/10
Pros
- You act the part really well, and tend to immerse yourself 100% in each song, which is the best part about your performances
- Vocally, it was more challenging that some of your past songs, but (and I say this as someone not familiar with the original) I just don’t like the song – still, with your voice, I could picture you as being the singing voice for some young Disney heroine
Cons
- One of your weaker weeks
- Watch your diction
- Be careful about sounding shrill and nearly yelling parts; either be more conscientious about where and how you’re breathing, and/or be more aware of how your bigger dynamics translate on the recording, because it probably doesn’t seem as loud and shrill as it sounds when we play it
- Your pitch was inconsistent – sharp in some places, flat in others, which made the shrillness all the more painful
2) Ebonic_Singer 7.2/10
Pros
- Finally, you eased up on the riffing! THAT is a joy to the world!
- Good tone and diction, and more upbeat than most other songs you’ve done
Cons
- It wasn’t vocally your strongest week – it sounded amateurish
- Audio quality was poor – it was muffled and I couldn’t hear your very clearly
- I said from the beginning that this wasn’t a good song choice for you, and I stand by that, mainly because it’s not challenging compared to some other more ambitious selections you’ve made in the past, plus it’s repetitive and gets boring after the first few verses
- If you were going to riff a bit at the end, you should’ve done something that didn’t sound so…tentative and unsure. It sounded like you were riffing because the notes were on the page (which, well, they weren’t), when really, the riffing should sound more off-the-cuff and display whatever emotion you’re trying to express (here…uh…joy)
- The sustained notes at the end were borderline yelling
3) jrb_actor 8.6/10
Pros
- Going acapella was risky but effective in the sense that it really made us focus on your voice, and it’s clear that you’ve got the most polished pipes in the competition
- I’m running out of things to say…I’m starting to sound like a broken record. Good tone, good pitch, etc. I say it every week! This wasn’t an outstanding showing from you, but at least you haven’t had a horrendous one, unlike most other contestants – but again, I’m still waiting for that one performance that will seal it for you, and I hope it comes in the form of Elton John next week!
Cons
- While the acapella was fine in showing off your voice instead of getting lost in the accompaniment, it also made your pacing…not uneven…just slow, until the last third, which I thought was excellent, and where the song soared
- The song started off unsure and low in energy, but at the first chorus, you became much stronger
4) Spiderdj82 7.2/10
Pros
- I love this song so much – listening to the musical intro was so nostalgic, and brought me back to…kindergarten and watching it at home!
- Good tone, as usual
Cons
- The music overshadowed your voice, both in volume and energy level
- I found this rendition sort of boring – not your best performance at all, but I’m sure you’ll still get the votes!
- Aside from the kickin’ music, it just wasn’t interesting, and worst of all, it was nothing we haven’t heard from you already. Like I said, you’ve set a high bar for yourself, and at this point in the competition, you’ve got to exceed the standard you’ve already shown us you can meet. This would’ve been a better song for your preliminary performance than for this. It’s just not a “singer’s song” in terms of showing off what you’ve got, but I know you can do much better.
5) WesternSky2 8.6
Pros
- So evidently you had sort of a sucky week, voting-wise, last round and you wanted to show people that they’re idiots for not keeping you around! So…it worked! Good song choice, and a better performance than last week. I’d be shocked if you’re in the bottom two again.
- You, like Kitz, are great at acting out a role while you’re singing your piece. You restrained yourself until after the musical interlude where you let your angsty belt rip, and I loved it.
- I love your middle- to upper-register, especially the sustained notes.
Cons
- I’m not a fan of the vibrato for the low notes (even though I don’t mind it elsewhere) – in the low notes, I find it distracting, although on repeat plays, it doesn’t bother me as much. I think my main concern (generally speaking, not necessarily with this song) is the speed of the vibrato, if that makes any sense. It’s as if it wavers between being vibrato and being a trill.
I'll be offline until tomorrow night - if the contestants could please say whether they'd like to make the show on the week of March 12 instead of next Thursday, I would be much obliged.
And don't forget to vote, folks! I've already been sending out clips via PM to newbie listeners, and I'd be happy to continue to do so for those who want to catch up. So far I've already received almost as many votes as we had in total last week, and many of them are from newbies, so I think we're picking up steam again!
Personally, I would rather do the 10 day thing than next week. I can barely squeeze in time as it is to record one song, much less two. But, whatever the final outcome is I shall follow.
Thanks for the critique, Tiff. Am I dissapointed? Kind of. Everyone hated this weeks submission but I thought it had a lot of energy in it and I personally thought it was one of my best since I have done primarily slow songs. But, apparently I am wrong and I will work on it for next week.
I have a question. If we can't find a karaoke track to a canadian rock singer ( and I will keep trying ) will we be allowed to do two britrock songs?
Nevermind. I found a canadian singer (thanks Tiff).
Canada: Michael Buble (don't know what song)
Britrock: Oasis (Either "Champagne Supernova" or "Don't Look Back in Anger)
Ok, I just listened to all of the clips and voted, but it pained me to do it.
All of you people are ridiculously talented and I HATE that I'm not going to be able to hear one of you next week. Good luck to everyone, you've all done an amazing job!
Spidey, I'm casting my vote for Don't Look Back In Anger - it would be AMAZING if you did that song!
I think I am leaning more towards "Don't Look Back in Anger" but I am going to record a rough cut tonight to see which one favors my voice more. Personally, I think my voice sounds very similar to Noel Gallagher and this is a song that he sings, so I should do better with it.
They are both solid choices.
Agreed, SP. I'm just partial to DLBIA, but I do love Champagne Supernova as well. I'm just excited that Spidey is doing Oasis to begin with!
I can vote for either 1 or 2 people? Am I understanding that right?

You have two votes--you can either vote for two people or for the same person twice.
Kitzy is correct.. Girly, you can either vote for one person twice or two seperate people once.
2nd page? tisk! tisk! How's the voting going? Are we getting more people voting than before?
OMG people! Why is this thread so dead?
we don't have Tiff to entertain us...
But i think lots of people should listen and vote!

Well now, this is just sad! Tsk, tsk - what would you do without me?
Spidey, are you familiar with any songs Michael Buble's written and/or performed? I can send you some tracks later. (My vote also goes to "Don't Look Back In Anger", BTW.)
Any other thoughts on one week vs. 10 days?
Voting's been going pretty well, but there was a lull today and some of the regular voters haven't submitted yet - I'm hoping it's because they're holding off until tomorrow to get them in!
And yes, you get two votes - two different people, or two votes for one person.
(Next week, this'll be eliminated to one vote, one contestant/voter.)
