b12b hit the nail on the head. It'll be good, soapy fun!
actually Anna when he met Anne he was between 30-33 and still in his prime
Besty, the point was someone said Bana could not play the role, I merely stated that he could.....No one was saying he or Jonathan was Henry.....sheeshm merely saying that physically he fit the role better than Jonathan
Poor Jonathan. He's always saying how he tries to pack on some muscle so he can be cast in films where he doesn't play a character with the body of a 13 year old.
OK. Maybe not in those words..but he tries.
and he looked damn good for that role Anna.....and for earliers in Henry's life it would have been fine....he certainly acted like Henry
He was a hot Henry!
I just saw the movie and Eric was wonderful.
Hot bod. :]
Loved Scarlett and Natalie [Natalie's my avatar] :)
Soapy historical fiction and I loved it!
Exactly!
For those looking for a good yarn, with soap-opera English drama, very good acting, and a juicy romantic period piece...
RUN... don't walk.
Sure to entertain.
I love Natalie Portman. Glad to hear that the film is soapy entertaining fun, I was afraid it'd be a pretentious Oscar-bait wannabe. Will see it sometime this week.
I wouldn't call it Oscar-bait.
But they all do a FINE job. Grab your popcorn and be ready for some, "I can't believe she just SAID that to her!!!"
The lady next to me even said "To hell with it Mary - hit the bitch!!"
I was like "well..what goes around comes around..poor Anne is gonna get hers..."
SPOILER
I know it was SO hollywood dramatic, but I LOVED the end scene with Scarlett GRABBING Elizabeth and making Tyra proud. I got totally caught up in the moment.
NOTHING wrong with good, entertaining period drama.
This one SCORES. And it's not about "art." It's about getting a rise out of its audiences.
On that level, it succeeds beautifully.
That's very nice to hear, Besty.
What I meant was that sometimes this period dramas can be so pretentious and epic (many done like this to appeal to the critics/academy) that they fail to be entertaining at all.
I'm thrilled that the film is pure entertainment and that the cast does a great job since I like everyone involved. Now I'm really excited to see it.
Even knowing a considerable amount about that time period, I had zero expectations going into the movie. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Great cast and one of the best films I've seen in a while.
Eric Bana isn't too bad to look at for 2 hours either.
He's a damn fox. His shirtless scenes alone are worth the price of admission.
I don't get Natalie or Scarlett at all. They're always too mall-y to me, so they always just look like girls playing dress up instead of playing characters.
Except for a few of Natalie's lines I thought this was a reasonable telling of the story. I'll always love BBCs SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII best though.
Sets and costumes were glorious and close to how I thought they should look. Kate Blanchet's and even Helen Mirrens costumes and sets were a bit odd to me.
Opps - Cate.
To me, it was a very enjoyable popcorn flick. It's very entertaining and my God was Bana hot.
his shirtless scene in Troy, as Hector is THE best (thank you Glebb)
I fell in love with Portman when I saw her in her Oscar-nominated turn in CLOSER. Her performance was heart-breaking, haunting, and so exciting at the same time. I think she is fantastic.
I have a love/hate relationship with Johannson (or however her name is spelled), but she was great in LOST IN TRANSLATION.
AnnaK<3LMIP:
That was hilarious!
My friend turned to me when they asked Anne if the King had been served and my friend said "Yeah, with a side of fries."
My friend also kept making fun of Katherine of Aragon's mole and right after she had just stuck it both of the Boyeln girls: I said "Wow, now's thats amazing." and my friend was like "Yeah, It almost made me forget about her mole." I was like "She just called them whores and stuck it to them and that's all you can say."
I love Natalie Portman, she's a beautiful girl and her acting in almost everything she's in is wonderful. I also love her comedic side she showed off on SNL. I kept watching her and waiting for her to break into her SNL-rap. :)
Glebb: I wouldn't be suprised if they get some recongition for the costumes, they were lovely.
I think I would have liked this movie more if I hadn't read the book. There were SOOO many differences.....and even differences in the personalities in the characters. For example, the Queen Katherine in the book would NEVER have have told off Anne like that. And Mrs. Boleyn was basically a dishmat to her husband and barely mentioned in the book.
I hate to say it, but I kept thinking of Wicked....where there's a book and then another incarnation of the book where they basically took the idea of the book and did their own thing with it.
That being said...it was a beautiful movie, and I really liked Eric Bana as the king, and Natalie and Scarlett as the sisters.
The most interesting thing was the bizarre previews that they showed before this film. There were previews for 'Shutter", "The Ruins", "Doomsday", "The Superhero Movie", "Drillbit Taylor" and "The Best of WWF"......not things I'd think would appeal to a crowd who'd come to see 'The Other Boleyn Girl".
wendy---I'm hearing that from several people now, when I mention it. If they read the book first, they like the movie well enough at first... but then the more they think about it, the more bothered they are by the changes that were made... and in hindsight they like the movie less. Interesting.
I didn't read the book at all, but I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. AGAIN, not Oscar-bait, but engrossing, juicy, well-acted and an intriguing story. A renaissance soap opera.
saw the movie last night....yawn. I was less than thrilled. Knowing much about Tudor history I picked it apart.
Anne was basically raised at the French Court, not just a couple of months, etc......it just didn't do it for me, except for when Henry was shirtless, and when he bent Anne over and...well, heh heh.
I have the book, I'm sure I'll like it better.
Has anyone seen the BBC version from a few years ago?
yes....I think I have seen every version made for TV (or on TV in America) and also the movies.
