What did you watch last night, Al? I usually go from Idol to Real World on Tuesdays -- until the day I can convince JRB or Phantom2 to come over.

I agree that choosing Estefan's music was foolish. They were all terrible last night. I wish they would just have celebrity judges rather than have the contestants sing Manilow/Estefan/Elton John songs when they will never sound as good as the celebrity. It was sort of suprising that Latoya and Fantasia didn't at least equal Estefan.

I did like Fantasia's drug-induced pose at the end of her song. Inspired!

Estefan's voice is buried in her recordings, unlike last night when the lead vocals were right up front. Gloria's contributions as a singer are minimal, her records are very overproduced and tracked. Last night's singers didn't have the luxury of triple tracking their vocals and pulling the synths to the front of the sound.

The show has always been what I like to call "trash tv", and I admittedly watch some of it. However, I think the reason AI has become even more "idiotic" is because of the voting. People aren't voting for talent, it's a popularity contest with young children (or, as I heard recently, older people) voting multiple times for who they think is cute, or for whatever reason other than talent. The viewing public lost respect for show because the voting makes no sense. I'd love to see the ratings sag because of this but I doubt it'll happen.

Yep, Last night was the first time I watched it in several weeks. Perhaps thats why I am more willing to give Simon the benefit of the doubt. People, there are better things to do out there and sit on your butt and watch tv! Almost all of it is crap! My favorite stations are the documentary channels sadly enough. Even then I only watch tv once or twice a week! I used to watch ti all the time and I can honestly tell you I really don't miss it.

I don't watch much TV. I do watch AI. It's fun. I like to see and hear performers. If I watch a total of 4 hours of TV a week, I'm not sure what the other 2 hours might be (Indians games notwithstanding, of course.)
Tracking numbers, 'reality' shows tend not to have ratings sags. They bottom out. This is the problem AI will probably face. It's the 'it' thing now but one day it simply won't be and there won't be any warning. This year, with its poor talent and even less credible voting, could kill it next year.
But it won't be gradual, that's for sure. One day and 'AI' winner will wake up after a concert and realize they've gone the way of the hula hoop.

Right on, JohnPopa. When Big Red is the big winner, it's buh-bye to Ryan Pea-chest and his merry men.

Did someone say Phantom2?

Why does AlDente bother coming to this thread to keep reminding us that he does not bother watching trash like American Idol?

I'm kinda amused at all the posts that voice surprise re Gloria and her music being chosen. Folks, the fastest growing population in America in Latino -- hel-lo?! Latin music makes billions, has its own radio stations, and Gloria, good bad or just a monotonous gal whose spitfire days are behind her, is the Latina equiv of Barry (White Pop) or Gladys (Black R&B). IDOL, appropriately, wants to be all things to as many people as possible. Why not? But the evening certainly explained why her numbers are rarely covered. I agree with those who said only Diana really found a comfort zone with the material. George -- bouncing over the stage, out of sync with the beat like he was on strings or meth -- reminded me of those young kids who do amusement park medlies 7 times a day.

Meth? I think George's short-burst bouncing was more like poppers.
In unrelated news, yes, I said Phantom2.

OHHHHHHHHHHH, puh-leeeeeze. A radio DJ said "Someone should take John out." And, his ridiculous mother has accused them of death threats. Ryan Seacrest is all hysterical about it, too. These freakin' people are so lame.

Last night was the 1st time I watched in weeks. I got to say that it's time for Fantasia to go. Her voice does nothing for me. I know you guys are ready for Big Red to go but her voice was torture.

John is finally gone.
What are his grandparents going to do now?
Ok, I admit it, I feel a little bit sorry for him.

DING DONG - THE LOSER IS DEAD.
LOL - jk.
He wasn't that bad when he sang his style of songs. But his song last Tuesday was murder. Just plain wrong. He didn't have much of a selection in songs, though. Ah well.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

My surprise at the choice of Estefan's music has nothing to do with how popular Latin music may be. It's simply because they're hard to sing.

I thought they were originally supposed to sing Latin pop and then it was changed to all Estefan.
