Whale Rider star Keisha Castle-Hughes, 16, and her boyfriend, Bradley Hull, 19, are expecting their first child this spring, her rep tells PEOPLE. The two have been dating for three years.
The actress first made waves playing the fiery Paikea in 2002's Whale Rider – a role for which she received a Best Actress Oscar nomination. At 13, she was the youngest Best Actress nominee in history.
"I thought I was still dreaming," she told PEOPLE about the honor at the time.
Since Whale Rider, Castle-Hughes has taken few roles, though she did play the Queen of Naboo in 2005's Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and will appear as Mary in the upcoming movie The Nativity Story co-starring Shohreh Aghdashloo.
The Australia-born actress grew up and still lives in New Zealand and – like her character in Whale Rider – is part Maori.
i thought this was a joke when i heard it but apparently not
Her playing Mary is extremely ironic in this case, in my opinion.
She's 16? She looks 30 in that picture.
I think that's funny that an unwed, pregnant minor is playing Mary in that movie. I wonder if there will be an uprising about it?
Again, another instance where I have never heard of someone.

In the "real world," that 19 year old would have been arrested.
it's so weird to think that there are people my age, even celebrities, that are having CHILDREN.

Maybe she and Paris Hilton could star as members of Mona's stable in a remake of "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas".
why would she even feel the need to publicize this? it's not as if she's an uber celebrity and everyone is speculating... i don't get it...
She was brought up in a completely different culture. I don't think this is all that unusual in the Maori world. Although, I do think they're usually married.
I so hope they film her real pregnancy for the movie where she's playing Mary. Maybe it's the second coming!
Even more weirdly, it seems like she's HAPPY about it, the way it was phrased in that article. But maybe those were the reporter's words more than hers.
i could completely understand if it were a part of her culture... but i assumed that as a Maori she would be married...

The movie is already finished, isn't it?

You mean the U.S.? There is a much bigger world out there. Age of consent in a lot of countries is 16.
Ok, in the US within the "real world" that 19 year old boy would have been arrested.
My roomate was 19, I think, when he married his 16 year old wife (...although today the divorce legally went through...)

Didn't Foley say that, too?
Eww...
Charming
Age of consent in many STATES is 16.
Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, D.C., Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming
And then there's the fun state of Utah, in which age of consent is 18, BUT if the younger of the two people involved is at least 16 and the age gap between the people is less than 10 years, then it's legal.

Thanks, FF, I was going to comment about that too.
Good luck to her and all, but honestly, I can't see this ending any better than any of the pregnancies I witnessed with classmates in high school, regardless of her fame.
