"It takes brass to go after someone for something you did." -- Bill Clinton
My favorite line from the very lengthy Village Voice review of opening night at Yankee Stadium:
Crotches were grabbed, as they are.

my nutshell review:
it's not a show for a giant field/stadium- it's just too specific with sets and visuals...you sit on the sides or way in the bleachers- you're screwed. the show works best up front and personal.
sound not too hot
because of the size of the venue
She hasn't performed as heavy of a physical show since Blonde Ambition
actually many moments of the show were reminiscent of Blonde Ambition and Girlie Show
less time on guitar- more time jumping from set piece to set piece.
vocals and lisynch combos throughout nothing new
tired of Vogue, Like A prayer- just overdone - they need a rest
loved candy shop, and a rare treat for fans was getting the B Side to Frozen (Cyberraga) from the Ray of Light days- after I'm a Sinner
Lots of dancers- double the amount that she normally has
i enjoy the dark stuff- and transformed into light and spiritual..upbeat
about the whole time start issue.
most main acts at any concert never start at 8pm or the time of the ticket.
there's usually opening acts.
Avicci played for 90 minutes and it was over at 9:30
They had to then change the set and add pieces to the stage....
she started at 10:15
maybe if she started at 9:45 -10 it would have been fine...
but impossible to do after avicci's set....
it was 2 shows in one- made me feel my ticket was worthwhile getting 2 full shows.
If you're not into DJ culture and AVicci- of course- it would be boring
But AVicci had some great mixes, dubs, house and of course played his hits and stuff from his latest album
it felt like any outdoor festival that lasts 4-6 hours....
it was a rave/dance party.....all night
which is the norm overseas.
sat next to a lovely couple from Scotland who follow her everywhere and they loved that it was midnight and Like A prayer was happening- as if a religious midnight prayer--
an outdoor club if you will- was the vibe... no biggie to dwell on
i would have enjoyed the show if it was in a theatrical setting....
Radio City maybe????
The show was on automatic- except for the middle
loved the Obama speech and petition plug- which simultaneously was probably happening during his actual DNC speech
all in all- much better than sticky and sweet and confessions tour
i cared for half the set list- but the other half I'm sure others wanted to hear...
thought it was a good show- fun- not the best. I think Reinvention was my favorite for some reason. but I am happy that there was so much involved choreography and that she fired Jamie King as director--a whole new team- and you felt that with this show.
I rate it higher than COnfessions and Sticky and Sweet---
but not as solid as Blonde Ambition, Girlie show and Reinvention..
and i still marvel at her ability to do whatever the hell she wants to do.
it's funny at times.....

That was my favorite line from the convention! It works great when used in a context that makes sense. I'm sure with some practice you can master it just like Bill Clinton!
I have seen every Madonna tour live since The Virgin tour back in 1985 (sat in the 10th row on the floor). I agree with Taboo, although not as good as The Blond Ambition tour, it reminded me of it. I also agree that this tour was better than both The Sticky and Sweet tour and The Confessions tour. My least favorite tour was The Drowned World tour. My favorites were The Virgin tour, Blond Ambition and Reinvention tour. I am glad I saw this show at an indoor venue. I don't think it would work as well outside especially in a stadium.

Madonna springs 'Holiday' to the crowd for waiting under the rain on her second sold out night at Yankee Stadium.
I love when she goes off track and springs surprises.
Watch Rocco come out and dance with her too.
Madonna dances with Rocco and goes all Holiday on your ass

She sounds amazing, at least for those first 52 seconds that I watched.

I think it would serve Madonna well to do a super pared down Bside, ballad cabaret show. She wouldn't have to go crazy on the performance dates, just give her fans a chance to hear her sing the songs that carry emotional punch.
Some amazing fan made clips from the show, some are massively high quality and could pass as pro shot

I only watched the last clip because life is short and I wanted to see the Cirque-y drum corps, which indeed looked pretty cool.
Now, are we meant to pretend we believe Madonna was really singing?
Not unless your daft. She sings live during many of the songs but a few she lip syncs on (GMAYL, Hung Up, Celebration), she of course spends many songs backed by singers or singing over her own voice as usual.

I was just asking because I wanted to go along with whatever the group agreement was. If we all agreed to convince ourselves she was singing (because so many of us spent a lot of money on tickets for a concert), then I would have happily said how she sounded amaaaaazing.
"i would have enjoyed the show if it was in a theatrical setting....

This is an issue I have with many of these more theatrical shows (which Madonna helped to popularize). Last time she played Vancouver, it was in a stadium which was just an awful venue for that kind of show (I admit, I doubt I wouldhave liked Sticky and Sweet much anyway, but it didn't help). She's back inan arena this time, so I hope that's a bit better, but it was great to have the opportunity to see Kylie, who of course doesn't seel anywhere as well (on thic continent) in theatres on her N American tours.
I am glad she's mainly ditched Jamie King (he's still listed as a creative consultant or something), who has really run dry of ideas and does about 6 tours a year now it seems. His best work was back when he choreographed anyway, not as show director, which he hasn't done for Madonna in over a decade.
Lol Namo you are running out of steam
'although not as good as The Blond Ambition tour, it reminded me of it.'
I have no doubt in my mind that the opening moments of the show were created to recall Blond Ambition. It actually made me excited for the show. I was even ready to forgive her showing up almost two and a half hours late. And then...and then. It all fell apart.
And calling AVicci an opening act is like calling the music in the elevators of the Marquise the 'overture.'

^^^ Out loud is the way in which that made me laugh.
I think this is by far her second best tour (Blonde of course the first). The stage was incredible, the lighting mind blowing, it was dark and not so.....happy, and thought she was on fine form.

You're just as entitled as anybody to hold that minority opinion. So many die-hards went to see that show and gave so many qualifiers in their reviews, it speaks volumes.
I just started listening to Alanis Morissette's new album and I'm loving it so far.
Namo the majority of people loved the concert as did the critics, of course some wont like it since she has always split people, but don't start trying to make out that the majority hated it, it's just desperate and your part.
And Mister Matt i am also loving her new album

THe background visuals during Girl Gone Wild were SPECTACULAR. I wish she'd find a way to perform Material Girl with some of the irony she has approached other vintage tracks.
"tired of Vogue, Like A prayer- just overdone - they need a rest"
Those are two of my favorite songs so I'm always glad when they make the list. I would have taken anything over Revolver though. She should replace it with White Heat!

That does not seem to be true of the US leg of the tour.
Lol rubbish, if anything the concert has been getting better reviews in the US and it got good reviews in Europe. In Canada the show has also gone down well with critics. I know you are desperate for her to fail Namo but really, you may get lucky another year.

She hasn't had many US dates, but if this is any sign of things to come...
I think, Namo, the Stateside reception to this tour may prove far warmer than your icicle-prickly forecast of doom might suggest. This reviewer seems to applaud M's efforts and I think makes some pretty good points of why MDNA works in the catalogue of Madonna tours.

Here's the US and NY Press Reviews for the MDNA tour.
They are all pretty damn positive.
For her 9th World Tour, this one is pretty high up there among the US critics.
