My opinions:
- Natalie Portman
- Julia Roberts
- George Clooney
- Julia Stiles
- Kirsten Dunst
Who do you think is overrated?
I assume we're talking about FILM. If so, I agree with ALL of yours, with a few reservations about Natalie Portman.
Mine:
-Russell Crowe
-Mel Gibson
-Clint Eastwood
-Toby Maguire
-Halle Berry
-Denzel Washington
Munk
My intention was indeed to talk about film actors. Sorry for not specifying.
And I agree with your list.
I like you more every day.
Same here! I have a few more to add:
-Morgan Freeman
-Edward Norton
-Bratt Pitt (is he really rated AT ALL?)
-Harrison Ford
-Tom Cruise
"Kirsten Dunst"
Have you seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?
I, too, thought she was overrated until I saw her in that.
Amazing. As is the whole cast and everything about that movie.
She's good in it, but I wouldn't say amazing...
I'd have to disagree about Portman, Dunst, and Stiles. Dunst is one of Hollywood's finest young actresses. She was the unsung hero of "Eternal Sunshine...". Stiles did good work in "10 Things U Hate...", "The Business of Strangers", "O", "Carolina", "Hamlet", and "The Bourne Supremacy".
And I can't believe that Portman is on your list, for obvious reasons.
Dont shoot...
But I find 'Million Dollar Baby' to be very overrated.
Film wise - and acting. It was nothing special, in my eyes.

Every actor anyone has ever liked or has ever been acclaimed for giving a good performance.

Dunst was great in "The Cat's Meow" and no matter how campy, "Bring it on"
as for overrated:
Harrison Ford
Gwyneth Paltrow
Tom Cruise
Halle Berry
Audrey Hepburn (I love her, but she really couldn't act)
Mel Gibson
Michael Douglas
Nicole Kidman
Renee Zelwegger
Angelina Jolie
Jude Law
Orlando Bloom
and a bunch of already mentioned
Julia Roberts
George Clooney
Julia Stiles
Robert DeNiro
Kirsten Dunst
Russell Crowe
Clint Eastwood
Toby Maguire
<----
Stop listing Tobey Maguire. I am hurting here.
Overrated (although some of these people might not be necessarily lauded for their abilities anyway):
Jamie Foxx
Angelina Jolie
Gwyneth Paltrow
Julia Roberts (although I somehow can't not watch a movie of hers)
Julia Stiles
Erika Christensen (one word: Swimfan)
Kevin Costner
Russell Crowe
The kid who looks like Crowe on the OC
Nicole Kidman
Judi Dench
ok, just kidding about that last one.
I would have to kill you if you weren't joking...
please. Judi Dench can only be put on two lists.
Greatest actresses of the 20th/21st century
And
Actresses who are so good yet still somehow manage to do incredible bad movies sometimes (Costarring Vin Diesel, no less!)
I cried when I first saw the Preview of The Chronicles of Riddick...
I heard the voice...and saw the crap...
It was like a nightmare coming true!
WHY OH WHY DID YOU DO IT?!?!?!?!
It's not like she needed the money...
Updated On: 3/21/05 at 11:07 AM
EVERYONE needs the money. One day the phone stops ringing.
Yes, but did Nicole also have to go out, botox her forehead to death, and overdo the tug on her right eye so that it's now permanently slightly askew? She looks so frightening it's not even funny now.
By the way, Doxy, when I saw the Riddick preview for the first time and heard La Dench's voice, I started to squeal, because I thought she was doing some really neat sci-fi/fantasy film that would make me happy (a la Lord of the Rings). Then I saw Vin Diesel come onscreen and I literally lost control of my bowels for a minute.
oh, Doxy, you know what I *HAVE* to say to that, don't you?
(pardon the momentary thread jack).
You can feel me anytime.
(Jack over)
And everyone sip your watermelon martini....and
Grope!
oh, Wildcat, you come on over with that icon of yours and I think no one will need the watermelon martini for courage first!
Back to overrated actors.
Am I the only one who thinks Richard Dreyfuss has done exactly one good movie in his life?
I agree w/ you 110% about Nicole Kidman, bwaysinger! What the hell has she done to herself?!?!? She's starting to look frighteningly Jacko-esque!
As far as overrated actors go...Al Pacino has been turning in the same performance for the past several roles I've seen him in. His work in The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, Salome, and even (to some extent) Angels in America seemed to be painfully similar, in my humble opinion. I enjoy Pacino, but after seeing Ui bunches of times, there were line deliveries in both of these other projects that sounded EXACTLY the same. Sure, the characterization might be different in all of them, but when his cadence and delivery is like a carbon copy of the last performance...I don't know.
Mabel, I feel the same way about Robert DeNiro. Here is an actor who was delivering invigorating performances well into his career but, at some point, just began to cash in on his name and "trademark" personality and coasting by on recognition of past laurels. Pacino is the same.
Dustin Hoffman, for the record, is one of that generation of actors I find still capable of generating interest in his character and using charm and skill to make his characterizations just different enough that you know you're seeing Hoffman but enjoying what's different about each role.
