Project Runway, anyone?

Thank you Zac Posen for doing us all a favor by putting Sandro out of his misery.

Bradon's clearly the front-runner, Dom the pacer, and Kate the sentimental favorite. Never thought I'd write this but for some odd reason I miss Michael Kors too. In fact, I'd prefer Zac, Nina, and Michael as permanent judges with the guest judge post eliminated altogether. I didn't know who Jesse Ferguson was until watching the episode last night. The Nina & Michael combo would have thinned the herd much sooner and yes I'm looking at you Miranda & Helen.

Overall that show's gone downhill since the Bravo days. The focus these days seems to be on backstage dust-ups, drama queen antics, and crying princesses with entitlement issues versus showcasing up-and-coming designers with a fashion-forward aesthetic, well-honed skills, and grace under pressure.

Sandro most likely ruined any chance he ever had at being cast for a PR All-Stars stint but I ain't complaining.

PS: The setup of Sue going over budget soon is so obvious.

I wonder....would they be able to USE leftover materials from previous challenges? It came out of her budget, it seems only fair. (I cannot fathom why she would spend 2x as much as the suggestion, or why she thought it was a good idea to construct two dresses.) To be fair, there is no way she's making it terribly far, so I'm not sure it will be a huge factor.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

That would be an interesting thing to see, dramamama. I would assume in past seasons they would not be allowed to since each challenge was budgeted. But with this "control your own budget" aspect then I would think it would not be out of the question to let them hang onto their remnants. Of course that would depend on if they have anything useable left over. Sue made two full dresses with what she bought, so I would imagine she used most of the material she purchased.

And I would agree that she probably doesn't have much longer left so it probably won't be much of an issue.

And as much as we pine for the old days, the drama and fighting and backstage antics have always been a part of the show. Wendy Pepper, the ultimate PR villain, hails from Season 1, and in Season 4 you had the whole Vincent vs Angela storyline (including the infamous Mom Challenge episode). The only season I seem to recall being relatively drama free was the Christian Siriano season (though there is the possibility that I'm forgetting something from that season).

Unfortunately there's just a lot of herd thinning to be done. I don't think the results would have been much different in who's gone home so far if Michael was there (with or without Heidi, which seems to be what you are suggesting).

Of course it was pure speculation on my part but I think that Sandro, Helen, Unicorn-Boy, and Miranda would have gone home in that order had Kors been a judge seated beside Nina. Zac and Heidi would have balanced things out because Nina Kors could be unbearable at times. The judges' endless feuding would be worth the price of admission.

Please check out Kors in all his glory at the link. There were times when I wanted to jump into the tv set and strangle him but the man knew how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

A neighbor lent me her dvd of season 1 so I could take a trip down memory lane. Say what you want about Wendy Pepper she got to show at NY Fashion Week. Revisiting the first season was a painful reminder of how the show's gone downhill to me at least.

For starters, the model eliminations in the first few seasons on Bravo were more brutal than the designer eliminations. Those models were paraded in front of the designers, ogled, and traded like slaves on an auction block. Each week a different model was eliminated by some unfortunate designer based mainly on appearance which must have been completely dehumanizing. Despite my opposition to the treatment of the models, it did make the stakes higher for all-concerned. Even if you didn't care for a particular designer's aesthetic, you felt sorry for the poor model who was regarded by some designers as damaged goods.

Hopefully I'll have time later today to get thru the dvd of season 2. Who can forget Zulema's famous line "I want a walk-off". I just realized that I got things mixed up earlier and named Santino Rice the winner for that season when in fact it was Chloe Dow. Season 2 was the season of the Los Angeles designers including the retread Daniel Franco from season 1.

Believe it or not the series has taught me to refine my technique as a software developer and to be on the lookout for the Wendy Peppers in my surroundings. Some people north of 40 become downright ruthless when presented with what they believe to be their last shot at major success in their respective fields. I'm not going to apologize for Wendy but any of us in her age bracket could detect the urgency in her quest on that show. Same thing with Patricia, Stanley, and Daniel last season. Wendy Pepper was a strategic genius on S1 in spite of her flaws.

I absolutely agree with your assessment of Wendy Pepper, and I think that's what made her such a wonderfully terrifying villain. I think that strategy underlying her ruthlessness is what still makes her stand out from the others, who merely just come across as catty b*tches. I also think that she lacked that same ruthlessness when she came back for the second season of All Stars. She was definitely a much mellower person that go around, which might explain why she didn't make it nearly as far.

From what I have heard the model eliminations are still a part of the process, the producers have just chosen not to air them anymore (maybe because of that meat market quality you describe, javero).

The modeling business IS brutal, and it has MUCH to do with the facade. One season, they tried to bring the models into it more with a models 1/2 hour show afterwards -- it was boring as hell.

But...isn't that basically how the modeling industry works? It was very telling in later seasons when the models had their own series and you got to see how they reacted to working with the designers. There were several who were very unprofessional, stirred up unnecessary drama, and at times, simply didn't show up, leaving the designer hanging. The hard-working models with a good work ethic would become popular with the designers. Designers would be very faithful to their models and those designers stuck with crappy models would jump at the chance to steal a god model from another designer. There often was a bit more to the selection process than simply their looks.

Now, I don't think the models had too terribly much to contribute to the success of the winning designer (which is why their prize was substantially smaller), but as long as they remained professional, they certainly did not contribute to the stress of the designers. And sticking with the same model meant the designers knew their size and proportions well, which was a huge advantage at the start of each challenge.

Watching the models was boring. I don't really see much talent in walking down a run way, and they don't contribute anything to the design, so I really don't care what they have to say.

I guess I'm just more focused on the designers and that aspect of it, and not the viewpoint of the models.

I assume the models' spin-off/segment was an attempt to cash in on the popularity of America's Next Top Model. The problem with it ultimately, when compared to Top Model, was that the outcome ultimately had little to do with anything that these girls did so there were no real stakes to the show.

Call me naive but could it be that a designer might regard a model as his or her muse or is that an oversimplification on my part? S1 winner Jay tended to go for a model with a personality similar to his, Kara Saun sought a meatier model that was as strong walker for her urban chic look, and others made a bee line for the tallest remaining model it seemed. Poor Robert had to eliminate a model at least 2x during taping thanks to the button bag.

I wouldn't find a 1/2 hr show about coat hangers too entertaining (as an ex-girlfriend described it) but showing the model elimination revealed just how ruthless the entire garment industry is to outsiders like me. Some of the more interesting runway models like S1's pain-in-the-butt Jordan were better walkers than the others and gave the garments life without overshadowing them.

In software development as some of you know there are endless discussions (and battles on occasion) with respect to form vs function. That's why the show resonates with me so much. My previous boss was a mansplaining Nina Kors wannna-be on steroids. And a developer who reports to me is a much more talented male version of Wendy Pepper who can be toxic on any project team if I don't micro-manage.

I thought for SURE they'd both go home. they hated both dresses equally, and it was made clear that Ken was the problem. I guess they're keeping him for the drama.

They would have been justified in sending him home for the garment alone. It would have been delicious.

I mean...I love Love LOVE Jeremy. I would break that home up and be the best wicked step mother EVER. And his dress was the best on that team. But that team should not have won! Bradon's extraordinary wedding creation should have vaulted his team to the top. But it would get waaaaay too boring waaaaay too quickly if he just wins every challenge.

I had no idea that Ken was that annoying. I'm now not certain which one I dislike more between Miranda and him. I agree that the wrong team won and it would be too disheartening to the others if Bradon won every challenge.

Speaking of Miranda, she seriously rode a pair of coattails. Neither of her teammates had any confidence in her design at first and I suspect they strongly encouraged her to edit like crazy behind the scenes.

The team from hell itself would have been Ken, Miranda, and Alexandria. Hopefully with Ken, Helen, and Miranda out of the way soon we'll get to see some of the brilliant work of the remaining designers.

btw, I finally got around to revisiting season 2. Santino Rice was such a d*i*c*k that season and Chloe Dow's winning collection wasn't that fashion forward. It was simply better executed than Santino's and more cohesive than Daniel V's.

Javero, I remember feeling disappointed when Chloe won. I have been disappointed a few times on Project Runway. I remember when Kara Saun lost season 1 which shocked me.

Ken needs a serious ass-kicking. I couldn't believe he was bitching that he was "forced to resort to duct dape". He CHOSE to use it. Because his design sucked. The design of the dress itself was worse than Sue's and not executed much better. And I would NEVER let anyone speak to me the way he went off on Alexandria. If he told me I was not allowed to speak or look at him I would have laughed in his face and launched into a filibuster. His personality really is no better than Sandro. He's less explosive, but every bit as arrogant, condescending and nasty.
