i also concur with AN EARLY FROST, but in "made for network TV category" would add DOING TIME ON MAPLE DRIVE to see not only the central performance of William McNamara, but also a very restrained dramatic one by Jim Carrey BEFORE he blew up into a comedy superstar. And they play brothers, not lovers...and BTW WEHT William McNamara? he was so easy on the eye and a fine actor.
a link to viewer reviews of MAPLE DRIVE...wish i could recall the character name of the actor who got our lead thinking about breaking off his traditional engagement to Lori Loughlin's character...that kid had charisma to spare.

I have two...maybe 3
Different for Boys...a trans woman falls for the guy who used to protect her when they were boys.
Relax...It's Just Sex
Jeffrey
then of course there is the classic series....EATING OUT
and i do have a fondness for MAKING LOVE and didn't all three do gay movie followups? i thought it was so cool that Ontkean and Kate Jackson were a married couple on THE ROOKIES and then in that gay triangle film too.
Kate Jackson and Michael Ontkean were on THE ROOKIES but their characters weren't married. Kate's character, Nurse Jill Danko was married to Sam Melville's character, Officer Mike Danko. Michael Ontkean played Officer Willie Gillis.
thanx i was obviously more a casual fan than a devotee of THE ROOKIES...did it alternate with another series or two, anthology style, or am i just as wrong about that?
i stand corrected, though i'd rather be kneeling in front of your avatar.
And Trick was one I liked too...I really liked that the two guys liked each other and was more cute than raunchy!

I"d have to go with LONGTIME COMPANION and PARTING GLANCES, still two of the best gay-themed films out there.
I'll second BOYS IN THE BAND, a fascinating film that I really should revisit. That film about the history of the play/film is really interesting, check it out: MAKING THE BOYS.
More recently, a little film called WEEKEND was released and got some attention, but not as much as it deserved. Seek it out -- a fine film about two men who hook up and get to know each other over the course of a weekend. Really well done in every way.

A colleague of mine mentioned Weekend, too. I have to say, I don't seek out gay themed movies the way I once did, but I'm going to look for that.

Namo -- it is well worth seeing. Very quiet, unflashy, not a big movie at all, but all the more interesting and important because of it. Feel free to put on the subtitles, as the British accents can be a bit rough on American ears.
I need to see Weekend too.
I've seen Chris New turn in exemplary performances on stage three times in recent years (the son in Hay Fever, Joe Orton in Prick Up Your Ears and the title role in Edward II). An uncompromising gay actor taking on some great roles.
I know I need to get over it, but I always find it ridiculous when North Americans need subtitles for British films (and I admit, my mom is one of them--when she met me when I lived in London she could barely make out half of what people said). Weekend is *great*--I know some people had issue with yet another gay film involving vasual drug use, but I thought it made sense for the story, especially for how intimate and unguarded they were with each other after just meeting--though I suppose somethign else could have been used.
i thought subtitles in WEEKEND might be more about "mumblecore" than accents. And i forgot about the joy of TRICK...a great film with naturalistic lighting and performances. i adored it. Nice to see the "hot" one of the two (as opposed to the "cute" one of the two) as the more sexually-integrated one (in terms of his comfort with gay sex). Usually it's the "heart of gold" kid more ready to trot hot, and the lust object more confused and reluctant.
See, I didn't like Trick at all. I just found the nerdy kid really pathetic in the way he was following this hot guy around who kept dismissing him or seemed really bored by it all. WAY too much effort involved.
I know I watched Weekend, but I don't remember a thing about it.

As gawd is my witness, I still think Tori Spelling deserved a best supporting actress nom for the french fry scene in "Trick."
I thought Trick was ok. I like Neve Campbell's brother (whose name I can't remember--I assume he was the cute/nerdy one you guys mention--he was later on All My Children and I think he came out a while back). I haven't seen it since I was a teen and back then it was still a novelty to see a gay romantic comedy, so i enjoyed it on those terms and it's certainly better than the lower budget similar films to come in its wake like the myriad Eating Outs, etc, but I have never really had a desire to see it again. I do kinda enjoy Tori in faghag mode (like that brief sitcom she had with Zachary Quinto as her bitchy gay friend--funny as I can't stand her in reality).
TwoStep you have a valid point about Weekend and its "realistic" mumblecore aspect maybe needing subs--I guess I assume if I can't make out every word, it's not too important... :P

...and from the amount of private messages I have gotten from board members since I put it up so would everyone else on this board...and I include myself.

Christian Campbell also has done some live theatre, and was in (along with Neve) the film version of REEFER MADNESS. i think in NYC i saw him in the live version too. Very talented.
And i just admit his go-go boy's monkey ears (such great handles) are mightingly appealing to me. As to me posting here versus to your PM...i'll save our privates for more steamy intimate exchanges.

Huh? I didn't PM you. LOL.
Right--he was in Reefer Madness. I met him on a shoot I did extra work on here in Victoria briefly--really nice, friendly guy.
Ha, I forgot that my friend and I refered to the other actor in it as Monkey Boy. I am sure I've seen him in other things...

Subtitles for English films---
I'm usually fine with British Etc. accents, but there are times when the heavier ones can be a problem. In ANIMAL KINGDOM for example, the heavy Australian was a little rough sometimes. What can I say? I saw NAKED several times before I realized that Ewen Bremner was speaking English at all -- it felt like the heavy accent was incomprehensible as a joke.
Trick also has the wonderful performance by Miss Coco Peru.
Lo siento CARLOS i didn't mean you had PMd me, though you are welcome to handsome. You wrote "and from the amount of private messages I have gotten from board members since I put it up so would everyone else on this board

and i was just saying i didn't PM you to express your avatar's shag-ability, i typed it here on the public forum. To use a dated cliche, i put my dirty laundry right out here on Front Street.
i think a tangential mention of PRICK UP YOUR EARS is worth saying that film version is amazing...not what i'd call exemplary in showing an integrated gay personality, but amazing performances overall and fascinating subject matter.
As to how the two boys in TRICK traipse around town, i never got the feeling Monkey Boy was bored or dismissing Cute Nerd. As someone who has been trodding the fine line between platonic and erotic for many years with many folks, and/or been there in get the timing of the consummation just right, it felt pretty familiar to me (albeit heightened for dramatic tension as most fictional narratives are). Not all of us can have the allure of Mister Matt which makes men purchase hotel rooms by the hour just to have access to the Mister's Mister *wink*. And YES Ms. Coco Peru does a great job in the film...amazing how much she and Ms. Spelling look alike. i also like the Cute Nerd's roomie, who i think has become better known as an actor but i didn't IMDB him to see. i love his roommate and her neo-Lesley Ann Warren take on the situation. And i even like the songs okay.
My face! She is blushing! And I used to love Mister Mister, by the way. Honestly, I haven't watched Trick again since I first saw it. I just remember being very put off by the main couple, but I did enjoy Spelling and Peru. Maybe I need to revisit the film with a fresh perspective. I know a lot of people loved it.
I enjoyed TRICK in many ways. Yes...Coco and Tori provide comic brilliance. But I really connected to the central couple. Mostly...cause I've had that night. I think most people I know have had some version of that night. No...it's not a comfortable place. But I thought Jim Fall (woof) captured it truthfully and with charm.
