I would never have guessed that Katherine had such a long and varied history behind it.

I wouldn't say Marisa has no meaning. It's an elaboration of Maria - which was the Latin form of the New Testament Greek names Mariam or Maria (the spellings are interchangeable), which were from the Hebrew name Miriam. The meaning is not known for certain, but there are several theories including "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for child". However it was most likely originally an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from mry "beloved" or mr "love".

I always thought that your real name was Chloe. Why did you use it as your username?

Because it's one of my favorite lesser-known Elton John songs, and also a very pretty name.

Very long. I've just been sitting in the same chair for 2 and a half hours. My day started at 11:30 and I've been home for 10 minutes.

I love that here I seem to have my name all to myself for once, quite a rare occurrence.

Oy Sarah, 2 and a half hours? I have a class that's an hour and 50 minutes and by the end of it I'm practically a zombie.

"Wolf counsel?" I never would have guessed that it came from German originally.

Adam means "man," but may also be related to words for earth, make and red. I find it kind of interesting that Pascal should refer both to Easter and Passover, if Adam actually is half Jewish.

Sarah, I've had a really long day too.

I've always loved name-related sites as well.

(Hah, I swear I'm not secretly pregnant.)

Those are fun sites as well, especially the first one, although not as thorough as the one that Chloe linked.

Alexandra is the feminine form of Alexander, which is derived from the Greek "helper and defender of mankind."

... or at least that's what the little poster in my room that I used to have said. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part eight

And Chloe, I remembered that your name was from an Elton John song! re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part eight Updated On: 3/22/06 at 08:28 PM

I looked up my name and it's Celtic/Gaelic it means "Island of the Ships." I find that really weird since I'm terrified of ships/boats.

Lexi, I love this kind of stuff. It's why I spend so much time googling around.

Alexandra is the feminine form of the Greek name Alexander - From the Greek name(Alexandros), which meant "defending men" from Greek (alexo) "to defend, help" and (aner) "man". Alexander the Great, King of Macedon, is the most famous bearer of this name. In the 4th century BC he built a huge empire out of Greece, Egypt, Persia, and parts of India.

Hmm, so apparently the name Jessica comes from the Hebrew phrase "he beholds" or "God is watching" (and yes, I totally started belting out "From A Distance" when I read that re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part eight). Also,

"William Shakespeare invented the modern name Jessica for Shylock's daughter in his play The Merchant of Venice. Though he may have intended it to denote a typical Jewish girl, the name has become popular with all ethnic groups. "

No wonder my mom liked that name so much! Not only was the Shakespeare class she took in college her favorite thing she ever studied, but it's also a name designed for the typical Jewish girl! Heh, I feel like I finally understand why my name is what it is.

It's definitely very interesting! I used to have a notebook filled with names that I loved. Even though I love unusual names, I can't say that I'd ever name my real children anything too out of the ordinary.

Something else I really enjoy is personality typing... not necessarily those five-question quizzes where you get a little result box that you post on your LiveJournal, but Myers-Briggs typing, the Enneagram, and the like. I don't know how truly scientific any of it is -- in fact, I don't think the Enneagram is remotely scientific at all -- but I find it very interesting.

... aaand that's my nerdy rant for the day. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part eight

ETA: Jessica, that's neat! "Typical Jewish girl." Heh.

Off-topic, but pretty cool nonetheless:

April 1st or 2nd (I'm not sure), Jesse L. Martin is going to be at my brother's school (Brandeis University)! It has nothing to do with Rent, but it's still pretty cool! I'd love to go, but I can't, so I'm going to try and get my brother to go. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part eight

Ooh, I have a whole book of tests like that somewhere around here. I remember going through all of them and then spending hours typing up the results in my Xanga. Yes, I had a bit too much free time on my hands my senior year of high school :-P

Oh man, look at this list of "teasing nicknames" for Jessica. I've actually been called some of the milder ones, and some of the naughtier ones would never have occurred to me but are totally awesome: http://tools.oxygen.com/babynamer/Content.cfm?ContentTypeID=1005&NameID=20649&BabySiteID=14337953
