This board hates me again. I *know* Luvtheemcee must have posted about that Stage Directions interview, but when I click here her post is nowhere to be found!
Sorry, but I can't listen to 37 hours of Raul without wanting for him to burst into a song. I would crack and pull out my Company recording.

Audio books annoy me. Just read the freaking book.

I'm with you on that. I don't like audio books, they take too long. I'm a very fast reader - the Stephen King book is supposed to be 1100 pages, and if I were to read it, it would probably take me about 12-15 hours.
And I have friends who use audio books as sort of....background noise. I don't get that at all.
Actually, I LOVE audio books. And I sorta have Raul to thank for it. I never would have cracked down and bought one if he hadn't narrated it.
I listen to them on the train. A friend suggested that to me a while back and it has been a life saver. I also like to listen to them as background noise, and I LOVE falling asleep to them. Though I'm gonna have to pass on this one. I love the idea of 37 hours of Raul reading, but I would NOT fall asleep to a Stephen King book. Ever.

I can't stand audiobooks. It is like background noise to me, and I constantly forget that I'm supposed to be paying attention to all that's being said so I can follow the story. Then I have to constantly rewind to catch up and review what I missed the first time (and second...and third...). I can't imagine trying to follow the plot in a 37 hour Stephen King audiobook. When I have the book in front of me, my mind can wonder and I have no trouble picking up where I left off, but when I'm listening to someone speak at length, it goes in one ear and out the other, with little to no retention. Definitely not an auditory learner.
There's a very short list of people whose voices I would listen to for 37 hours. Raul is not on the list. He has a great voice, but not one that I could listen to reading the phone book, as it were.

I have listened to both of Raul's previous audiobooks. BOOK OF UNHOLY MISCHIEF was a disappointment because the book itself is pretty pointless but I can recommend HOUSE OF THE SCORPION. He is quite fresh and creative with that one, and he does actually sing briefly (and beautifully) in Spanish.
I don't like audiobooks (except for long train journeys). My favorite reader is Len Cariou but he is doing a lot of detective/thriller things that I can't get into.
Don't like Stephen King - so I may just wait for this to show up in the library.
I hope these audiobooks pay well. For an actor, they're a ridiculously easy gig. No makeup, no costume, no blocking to rehearse, and you don't even have to memorize the lines. The majority of the prepwork (aside from just reading the book) would be creating the different voices you'll need.
I think Jim Dale is the acknowledged master of this - supposedly he created over 500 different voices in order to do the audiobooks for the whole Harry Potter series. He and Raul are friends - presumably he's given Raul some pointers on the finer points of audio book recording. But I bet the best part is getting to read the book before anyone else does. Score!
