"Sookie lost Gran"

Agreed but Gran was not a love interest. That series has a peculiar way of dealing with relationships even for tv land.

Sadly Terry's gone but not missed. Several folks on this end are hoping that Alcide and his dad are the next ones offed. I don't think the werewolves have added anything to the series. Perhaps they serve a useful purpose in the books. And don't get me started on the were-panther and ifrit foolishness.

JAVERO, i totally agree, like i said earlier, i think all the fairies, shapeshifters, werewolves, werepanthers, werekoalabears have turned the show from a great one, to an R rated version of CHARMED. it was so much better when they focused on Tara, Merlottes, Jason and the other humans, with a couple of vamps thrown in. but i still watch so whats that say about me.

Agreed but Gran was not a love interest

I know. I was basing that off of the "Andy lost daughters" point.

Love interest wise, I think how her relationship with Bill has deteriorated is a bit of a loss.

Welcome back, PRS! I was out of town, too! Hope you had a good trip. I'd make pleasant conversation asking you where you went, but can't, for fear of getting criticized for...writing something. :)

Anyway...agreed, Wyn, about Warlow being screwed. I predict that the season cliffhanger will be Warlow killing Lillith (but how will Bill survive, since he's the star of the show, and all, so he kinda has to?), and then "is Warlow dead, or isn't he?" I predict we find out he's dead at the S7 opener. Which is sad, because Rob Kazinsky is a neat actor and he and Sookie do have chemistry and things in common that are helpful to both of them. Wonder when Warlow's blood will wear off on Bill and his day-walking; most likely it could catch him off-guard and put him in some peril.

And...only 2.5 minutes of Warlow in this episode, after 2 seasons of talking about him and a monumental fairy-sex scene as last week's cliffhanger??

Anyone mildly irked by the fact that there are only 10 episodes this season, instead of 12? The showrunners have talked often about basically trimming the fat of the "too many characters" problem, which is a good thing. But why also trim the episodes to do it? That means too much stuff, as one of you listed a few posts ago, will get crammed into the last few episodes coming up, here.

Also agree with the "Vamps: They Live Just Like Us!" criticism. In S.1, it was well established that vampires are inhuman and primal, and the ones who harbored any "human-like" emotion, like Bill, at first, were considered the oddballs. In this season, suddenly everybody's a limp, sheep-y, weeping mess: Jessica, Tara...even newbie Willa was only primal for about an hour or two, now suddenly she and the rest can contain themselves? That camp is full of human guards; it's amazing the vamps haven't been able to mutiny much earlier. Anyone a bit bothered by the fact that Eric, who used to be the pillar of badassiness, is now weeping and begging Bill and the ghost of Godric to heal Nora? (I get it, he's close to his sister, but it still seems a bit out of character for him.) He was emasculated as of the ep when he shouted in Gen Pop, "Has-Anyone-Seen-My-Friend-Pam!" and everyone ignored him. How does that happen to a 1000-year-old Viking who was once the King of Louisiana, still of some repute and respect, and all vamps in the state, in that camp, should have still known who he was? Maybe all bets were off once they all got captured. Nora's death was sad but I didn't tear up; Skarsgard was great, though. And so was the blood-bladder makeup effect when Nora turned into true-death goo.

One final thought, speaking of which: does the "concentration camp" aspect bother anyone? The pulling teeth, "medical/sexual experiments," etc? Then again, in another interview, someone stated that "this season is to return to showing that humans basically are the ones who hurt others," which is pretty universally true.

OK, have a pleasant evening, ya'll.

That's a good point lovepupy. If you have less characters but less episodes isn't it the same problem?

Oh and the concentration camp/ laboratory thing is so a complete ripoff of Buffy the Vampire Slayers Initiative. Same setup and all. Joss whedon should sue.

Wynbish, I think back to my total SHOCK that they killed of Gran. Those were days of innocence in Bon Temps . . .

I was thinking of that too, Reg. And a the first crack in my investment in the show appeared when that happened. Not that I haven't watched every episode since.

thats great NAMO. when i expressed the same idea earlier about how the show isnt as good now as when it was when they focused on the more innocent days of less fairies, were-(fill in the blanks) and stuff you said in not so nice language that no one else thought that.

Glad to see you come around, its not flipflopping, its reevaluating, and thats kewl

Reg, I was hoping Ghost Gran would pop in once in a while, like Aunt Clara. I don't know why TB never went full-on Bewitched.

I liked when Gran ghost appeared to smack the evil out of Marnie but seemed like she couldn't give two craps about seeing Sookie.

My first thought was "Oh god, Gran's going to be a vampire" (before it became clear what the rules were about turning someone). I'm very glad that didn't happen.

But I still miss her; what a lovely performance. All the mother figures have been played by extraordinary actors.

I'm embarrassed to say I've never watched this show. (I know, I know...) Can I jump in on the current season or do I have to do one of those marathons and catch up from the very beginning?

You need to start at the beginning. Not least to see Lois Smith as Gran.

The series as a whole has a lot of ups and downs, but I think you'll enjoy the first season.

Yeah, you could jump in at the beginning of any given season, I suppose (I have friends who started at season 3 or 4 and still never watched the earlier seasons), but there's a lot of good stuff in the first seasons, so as a fan, I'd recommend giving it a go from the beginning. This season is three episodes from being over, so you'll have a year to catch up before the next one!

I started with the first episode right before Season 3 began after hearing the creator of the show talk about how big an influence the soap opera Dark Shadows was. Since that was our schoolkid obsession in 4th and 5th grade, I thought it might be something I liked. It turned out it was, replete with all the things that can exasperate regular viewers... kind of like a vampire SMASH.

In the interest of time when you get to that point, we can probably just sum up Season 5 for you, with clips of Russell as visual aids. Any other season was pretty good and can be watched. Season 5 is almost unwatchable unless you just wanted to follow it week-to-week

Gran dying did suck, but S.1 got me curious about the books, and she dies in book 1, too. S.1 and S.2 stay truest to the books, with variations, then elements of the next few books into the next few seasons, but the show is its own, for sure.

Always lovely to see Lois Smith in the flashbacks.

I cant believe no one is talking about Tara and her Mom played by Adina Porter. you would think that she was a crackhead in real life. amazing storyline and performance

Doesn't Game of Thrones stay relatively close to the books?

I guess there is something good about a series not following the books, since even the book-reader can still be surprised. Both just need to be good, though.

If it stayed too close to the books, we would have lost Lafayette so long ago, he would be a good memory like Gran.

I admit that my book issue is my problem. Thinking back, maybe it has to do with my disappointment in a Dark Shadows novelization back when I was a child. I blame my mother.
