"interesting. i never noticed that but that would explain it. thank you
I thought it was too similar to last weeks. I know we're in election season, but do we have to have an election scene every week?

When the election cycle is this crazy, yes. The cold open and the Hillary commercial were some of the most lacerating political sketches SNL has done in recent memory. Larry David is definitely going to get an Emmy nom for his recurring guest role as Sanders (or his hosting gig).
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
Kad is right again! When SNL has such hugely talented standouts, like LD or Kate , really all of them are really getting it right. This is "pee your pants" funny territory! Jay Pharaoh as Ben Carson and Tina and Darrell... well like Kad says it's Emmy time. God help us if the unthinkable happens!
I don't think they have ever done this before, for anyone. The most was a brief tribute when Gilda Radner passed away, they played her "dancing in the dark" w Steve Martin sketch. And she was a well beloved original cast. Lorne must have reaaaalllly liked Prince.
I'm sure he does. The other difference Gilda and Phil Hartman both died on a new show week. They were given small live tributes. This week Studio 8H was dark and a Peter Dinklage repeat was scheduled, so this tribute was the planets aligning perfectly.
ETC: The weirdness spell check created.

Yes, he was emotional of course but the narrative was done without an audience and maybe that felt different to him and the show probably did not have a lot of time to be put together.
Headband said "If by "nervous" you mean emotional, then yes..."
I didn't see it that way. I didn't get emotion from him at all. Rather, he seemed uncomfortable. It was awkward, like the entire show was. I tuned out after about half hour. They showed one unknown song, then a commercial. Then another unknown song, and a commercial. Why they chose Fallon anyway as a host is weird to begin with.
As for the songs they chose, perhaps it was promo for new to be released album.
Prince was a genius, an icon of mine, but this was disappointing.
This Prince show was such a disappointment. I am sure they threw Jimmy Fallon in there at last minute and it showed. It was like they new they didnt have enough material and were telling Jimmy to stretch it out. Worst of all was the 3 Prince Show skits. They were embarrassingly bad, especially when put together.
The show was worth watching though for that party video that was never showed before though. That was amazing, just seeing the joy on his face while he was playing was special
What I realized watching the special, is that SNL has a treasure trove of videos of practically every major recording artist of the last (almost) half century performing live. A wonderful archive for prosperity!

I guess I thought they would have more people there than Fallon to celebrate Prince's life and it would not be all about showing clips. And the skit footage was long and not that well done.
I agree w you about that archive of music SNAFU- what a resource!
I'm going to be very cynical now and say that given the fact that it would have been a rerun- the numbers for a tribute show (from material they already have/own) about someone so present in the international eye must have been irresistible to Lorne Micheals. Tina Fey mentions in her book that she really didn't want to do the "sneaky upper" episode w Palin on SNL but the numbers they were expected to draw "persuaded" her and with good effect. (17 million viewers for the Palin night.)
Ratings are ratings are money.
"Goodnight Sweet Prince" was Saturday’s top-rated program, according to Nielsen overnights, averaging a 4.5 household rating/11 share and a 2.1/11 in the 25 markets where adults 18-49 numbers were available. (Variety)
Oh and it's the same cynicism that allows me to look on the reunion tour TRIBUTE of The Revolution as a blatant money grab for folks who's careers have stagnated. ( notice they never" reunited" while Prince was alive). Last chance for some Fame/Money.
Brie Larson got her mom tickets to the hottest show in town.

While it was fun to see Church Lady, I felt the entire episode was underwritten and poorly executed. And why hasn't SNL managed to target Morning Joe? It is RIPE.

OMG -- can you just imagine Taran Killam and Cicely Strong as Joe and Mika? I'm laughing already.
The only sketch this past weekend that I absolutely loved was The Cut.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
