I was revisiting some film scores last night while I was cleaning my apartment (yes, I do housework), and I found myself moved to tears as three in particular: Alfred Newman's score to LOVE IS A MANY-SPLENDORED THING and his score for THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK
Another one whose music swept me up and got me "all choked up" was George Delerue's score for CRIMES OF THE HEART.
Which film scores move you to tears or do you love?
Some of my other favorite scores are:
PEYTON PLACE - Franz Waxman
IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT - Quincy Jones
THE ODD COUPLE - Neal Hefti (actually I love almost all his scores ~ I'm a Hefti junky...)
THE SAND PEBBLES - Elmer Bernstein
THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR - Michel LeGrand
SUPERMAN - John Williams
CASINO ROYALE (2006) - David Arnold
MARJORIE MORNINGSTAR - Max Steiner
RICH MAN, POOR MAN - Alex North
BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE - George Duning
PICNIC - George Duning
AUNTIE MAME - Bronislau Kaper
GONE WITH THE WIND - Max Steiner
DR. ZHIVAGO - Maurice Jarre
BARBARELLA - Charles Fox
Oh, and anything MANCINI touches.

THE HOURS - Philip Glass
WannaBeaFoster beat me to it. Glass' score for THE HOURS moves me in ways very few things do.
You named several of my favorites, RetroBoy... Peyton Place, Picnic being at the top of my list.
Also To Kill a Mockingbird and Far From Heaven by Elmer Bernstein.

" Ryan's Daughter "
" Manhattan "
" Radio Days "
" Evil Under The Sun " some of my fav's.
Happy New Year to ALL........
I agree with Far From Heaven. I don't generally buy score recordings. But I had this one the day after I saw the film. Another favorite is Peggy Sue Got Married, not the performed songs, but the instrumental underscoring.
The sweeping score of OUT OF AFRICA.
It absolutely moves me to tears.
(Fairly) recent scores that I love:
Shine
Mansfield Park
Good Will Hunting
Enchanted April
The Age of Innocence
The Legend of 1900
Central Station
Return to Oz
Older vintage scores:
Now, Voyager
Best Years of Our Lives
Our Town
I love the score from Missing.
The use of Softly and Tenderly in A Trip to Bountiful.

The score from FINDING NEVERLAND is just pure love.

These seriously make me tear up every single time I hear them:
Legends of the Fall- James Horner
Meet Joe Black- Thomas Newman
Last of the Mohicans- Randy Edelman
Brokeback Mountain- Gustavo Santaolalla
Emma- Rachel Portman
and it might sound silly but I love the instrumental theme for My Best Friend's Wedding :)
Though not a 'score', Joni Mitchell's version of 'Both Sides Now' in LOVE ACTUALLY makes me cry. Every single time.
I really love the music from the recent live-action "Peter Pan" too, and I think it's interesting (to say the least) that a studio like Disney, who has wall-to-wall back-catalog music to pick from, chose THIS score (from a non-Disney film that had to be licensed) for use in their advertising campaign for Disneyland!
It works beautifully, which is I'm sure why they went for it. But that movie was not Disney!
They must love the music THAT much.
For me, it's not complete scores, but moments.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC: the opening shots, as the camera pans the Alps, the meadows, the rivers, etc., finally honing in on Maria on the hillside.
THE WIZARD OF OZ: After the Poppy Field adventure, when the group spots the Emerald City in the distance. I think it's "The Merry Old Land of Oz" in full orchestral sweeping mode.
WEST SIDE STORY: The end credits.
I own and love all the scores from the Fellini films, by Nino Rota.
" (yes, I do housework),"
yay, can you come over here today?
Portman's for CIDER HOUSE RULES.
Bernstein's FAR FROM HEAVEN.
And one no one else likes or knows, Horner's for PERFECT STORM --so thrilling, it almost makes the mediocre film seem better than it is.

I recently scored (pun intended) a copy of the long out-of-print soundtrack album to the 1972 film, COME BACK CHARLESTON BLUE with music composed by the late great Donny Hathaway and supervised/conducted by Quincy Jones. It's currently available as an import with bonus tracks. What a funky, soulful, fresh score.
While I'm on Quincy he composed a beautiful theme song to the film CACTUS FLOWER entitled "The Time For Love is Anytime" performed by Sarah Vaughan. Also long out of print but what a lush, beautifully sung piece of music! Talk about bringing a tear to my eye. The lyrics and Vaughan's delivery get me every time!

I own a 2 disc Special Edition of LADY and THE TRAMP with the songs and the film's underscoring and music cues... that is a really fun listen!
Tara's Theme (Gone With the Wind) always brings me to tears. Mockingbird (of course) and Steel Magnolias are right up there with it.
Maybe I have a fixation on the South?
Glory
Legends of The Fall
Field of Dreams
E.T.
The Mission
To name a few.
