i quit drugs last year.
i also quit smoking.
i also gained a half ton of weight (a loose estimate)
now i feel like a shlub.
a drug-free, non-smoking shlub.
i know that i am better this way and my boyfriend is constantly telling me how hot i am and trying to get to my goodies, but i don't feel hot.
i feel like a shlub.
i think i should try pilates.

work out and eat healthy? swimming is a great excercise. step class is lots of fun too.
If you like pilates, go for it! It should be fun.
Aren't you in a musical? Go to dance class. That's what I do - it's made a huge difference for me.

Just smoke copious amounts of pot, silly.
first, congratulations on quitting... but definitely try something like yoga or pilates... swimming is great, and i also love stupid/silly classes like jazzersise and things like that...
Liposuction? (Hey, that's what I would do.)

Cardio to boost endorphins. 5-HTP a supplement to help with sugar cravings and elevate mood. GABA to help with anxiety. And 12-Step meetings for perspective.
These all really helped me.
Take care. Good Job. Good luck. God Bless.
Namo--I knew a girl once who quit drugs and smoking and gained a half ton of weight and felt like a drug-free non-smoking shlub.
And then she died.
Suicide, no doubt.

um...thanks?
i think i'll steer clear of the suicide weight loss solution.
but the other suggestions were very helpful. thanks all.
What the Fu&% is the point to this inane post?
stagegrrl- I love Pilates, but honestly, it's not gonig to burn that much fat. It's more for improving posture, muscle tone, and flexibility.
If you enjoy spinning, then there you go.
Also, try a vigorous form of yoga. You'll great a great workout (I sweat profusely for 2 hrs in my classes), and it's also very good for your internal organs.
And I suggest picking up the red wine habit (see Favorite Wines thread).
(And i LOVE lildogs' post!)
Running or a brisk walk everyday works. In two weeks it will change the entire way you think.

My mom loves pilates and it totally changed her attitude. It definitely allowed some weight loss too. I've never seen her happier then when she does pilates. The few weeks she had to go without it she was a mess. I would definitely try that!
See, what I would have done is to mix my varieties so I wouldn't get so hungry...also, cucumber salad and citrus fruit make great late-night filling snacks with no fat...also drink alot of water.
And doing a morning warm-up will start your metabolism early...
Just remeber it takes one or two weeks for your body and your head to sort of get in that zone. But I promise you.. it will change you.

Change your eating habits and do some classes at the gym.
Yes, I know, easier said than done, but it does work wonders!
I realized about a year ago that I'd started gaining weight, so I started doing things in baby steps: cut out snacking, started working out, then worked on portion control.
I love going to different types of aerobics classes and take some body pump classes (I don't enjoy weight lifting so much, but I was told that it's good to mix up the classes).
Don't let yourself get overwhelmed - just change ONE THING and you'll see a difference.
Cardio Cardio Cardio. Walking, jogging, running, dancing etc or the combination of them for 30-45 min 5 times a week makes a tremendous difference. Not only does it help increase you energy level, but it also helps you burn off calories and will eventually help keep your weight down.
Make sure you are drinking plenty of water...ALL DAY LONG! Many times, people eat because they mistake dehydration with hunger. Try to cut down on juices, sodas and coffees and drink water. Also, a glass or two of Fat Free milk helps regulate weight.
I also try to limit the amount of snacks/sweets I have. I think that completely abolishing them from your diet isnt smart, but knowing when you should have them is important. On a Friday night when you go out to dinner, a dessert is nice. But, eating dessert every night after dinner is excessive and un-needed.
Being in the process of stopping smoking myself... and doing some research about the weight gain, etc., that goes along with it: it takes about a year for your body's metabolism to completely sync up again. Yeah... it's possible to quit smoking and not gain weight. But you are already dealing with one addition...
Eh, the no-eating diet works for me. I've heard that's bad though =)
Re-train your brain. Every time you get the urge to, say, eat a donut, do ten push-ups. After a week or so, the donut eating impulse will be gone. I dunno if it's scientifically proven, but my gramma taught it to me when I was a kid and it always always always works.
I had a super fast metabolism and barely ever gained weight my whole life. I quit smoking almost 8 months ago, and well, I've gained A LOT. I didn't substitute eating for cigarettes, it's just natural. Biggest step for me was accepting that it would happen, and not getting all upset like I did in the beginning. I've tried seriously exercising/dieting in the past few months, but it never worked. I was told, like DD said, it takes approx 8 - 12 months for your body to sync up. So, that's my new goal!
Also, I have heard that it takes 21 days to break any habit, or to start a new habit.
Water, water, water. And Portion Control is the other big step when losing weight.
